This movie is fantastic for adults, but some of the music lyrics are too sexually suggestive and are highly innappropriate for tweens who are highly impressionable and don't need to be learning about sexual matters through music lyrics.

You should think first before seeing this with a tween!

- Inappropriate sexual content
I was concerned about the sexual sugesstiveness of many of the dance moves, the difficultly of explaining to my daughter why a male actor was dressed up as a women. I went with an open mind to this movie, based on feedback from another adult. I found myself cringing through many moments, hoping that most of the innapropriate material was going over my kids heads. In spite of some positive messages, I would not let my kids see this again.

One of the best musicals ever was put into a blender with the perfect cast, great music, and a touching message.
This movie continues to be one of my favorite movies of ALL time. The content was chopped up in half and would go over kid's heads anyway. But I realized that you will never see these pefrect actors in one movie, very often. It's fun, upbeat, and great for black history month!

Good times
This fun musical is good for all ages. Most references are harmless...REALLY. Also if you watch with your kids should solve any misunderstanding. ENJOY!

Fun Progressive Movie
Hairspray is a great, inspiring tale about moving forward, but keeping the positive memories of the past. The diverse cast thoroughly tramples racism. It's all delivered with fun, witty songs. Parents: Common Sense Media did not cover the sex quite right. The whole movie is filled with sexy dance scenes and suggestive lyrics (talking about shaking up a man, getting their hands on people, French kissing, going all the way, and throaty growling abound). The positives are great though, including an iterracial relationship and tons of messages about being yourself and that being enough.

My kindergartener and I dance to the great tunes!
We love this movie so much... the music and dancing is amazing. And my 6 year old daughter even learned and understands what "intergration not segregation" means due to this movie.

Not PG
I was amazed at the fact this movie is PG. The swearing and smoking didn't bother me. The part I thought was iffy was the whole sexual element. I was rather caught off at some of the lyrics. I can't believe that it was able to be rated PG and not PG 13 considering how much their lyrics and dancing hinted at sexual stuff.

Hilarious!
This is a fun movie! John Travolta's performance is amazing! Great conversation starters with the kids, on how things used to be with racial segregation, judging others by how they look, and standing up for what is right. The sexual innuendos are at about the same level as the movie Grease - most of it goes over the heads of the kids, but be warned it is definitely an iffy issue.

A brilliant film. A must see for tweens+
Hairspray was one of the best films of the year for me. The plot, dancing, singing, and message were all well-done. Although this film is rated PG, there are some sexual references that will go over younger kids' heads, and others that are a bit more obvious. The point about standing up for yourself and others, as well as accepting people no matter their skin or size is excelent.

Definitely for tweens and up
Because Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes were in it, I thought it might be appropriate for my 8 year old. Boy was I wrong. Aside from the smoking and racial situations (which my daughter didn't understand), Common Sense neglected to point out the comment made near the beginning of the movie by the show's host regarding a female member of the dancing cast: "She will be away for 9 months
" How am I to explain that comment? Definitely for children who know something about the birds and bees and have some historical knowledge of the 60s. As an adult, though, the movie was fun! LOVED the dancing scene w/ John Travolta and Christopher Walken! ;) - I rate this title on for age 11 and give it
Infectuous! Fun! Funny! Inspiring! You Must See It!
HAIRSPRAY is a brilliant film. The cast is simply outstanding and unbelievable. The music is fun, the script well-written and funny and the message is inspiring. When you see it, it's impossible not to sway to the music and root for the energetic hero, Tracy (impressive newcomer Nikki Blonsky) and her friends. John Travolta tries something new: playing a woman. I think he suceeds. Through his high-heel dance numbers and various imitations he's an over-the-top hoot. All of the cast, including superstars Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, and Allison Janney, as well a teens Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, and Elijah Kelley. As far as questionable content, it is limited. I don't know where all the other reviewers get their PG-13s. There is no violence. Mild language like d**n and a**, as well as crude jokes like "fattie" or "screw". No sex or nudity, but some suggestive humor and comments. Nothing really to be worried about for ages 10 or 11 and up. All in all, it's hard to keep away from this one. It's very rarely that a musical this meaningful, fun, and age appropriate comes around. Take advantage of it. Highly reccommended.

Loved it so much we saw it 4 times then bought the DVD
There are certainly some moment that I wish had bee left out....exactly like Grease! Some inappropriate 'sex' type remarks. The movie would have been equally awesome without them. But they were very minor and the movie is so fast moving and hysterical my kids didn't notice. I never notice the same type things in Grease till I was an adult. But this movie was the goofiest thing I've seen in years. We had a blast all four times we sang and danced in our seats the whole movie. Even my husband gave several out loud hard laughs! We bought it the day it came out. It's worth it.

Too sexually sophisticated for little kids
No naked bodies or people blown apart. But this is an older teen comedy! It's moderately interesting, but not great Sort of a weak sister to GREASE!

Hillarious with a heart and message
As an adult -over the age of 40- I thought it was a great movie and provided important social commentary amongst the hilarious situations. The cast is spot on. Though I am usually very cautious and conservative taking kids to movies, this was one I really wanted my oldest to see. We love musicals. However at just barely 10, much was over her head. The rating for 11+ is the correct one. Our post-movie chat emphasized how brave and admirable Tracy is and what great parents she has. The movie is brilliant because there are so many layers. Highly recommend.

I laughed and even came close to tears
I took my daughter and her best friend to see this movie for her birthday. We all loved it! It's really funny, and has a great message to go with it! I almost cried during 'The March' part of the movie with Queen Latifah's song. Great message to everyone this day and age. If i was going to say anything negative about this movie.. It took me a short time to adjust to seeing John Travolta dressed as a Plus size woman! But he did very well with the part and it was funny. One more negative, my daugther was very shocked when her crush (Zac Efron) yelled out "Kiss my A**" she didn't realize that he said words like that.. BUT other than that, the movie was awesome and I recommend it to everyone.

Great Summer Movie
I dragged my 10 yr. son with me against his will and he LOVED this movie. He laughed the entire way through it. He now watns the CD and DVD. It was amazing how I had to explain the segregation part of the story. He had no idea that people were so mean to each other over race and weight. I loved the music and enjoyed all the actors especially Nikki Blonsky. There were a few jokes that sailed over my sons head, and a few I had to explain. He oouldn't understand the teachers smoking at school or the two pregnant ladies drinking and smoking at the bar. This was a gerat time to explain a little history and the use of sarcasm and cliches to make a point in a movie. There are very few movies made today that I would see txice, but this is one of them.

Fun Family Movie
Our family went to see this and we have three kids...a 7 year old boy who loves "Grease", a boy who hates musicals who is 10 and a girl who is 12 and in 7th grade. A positive message throughout the movie about love and friendship and going after your dreams and how size and color shouldn't matter. Especially with with our youngest we will be following up about the word "negro" and how we don't use that term or word in todays world and why. It should be mentioned that there were a few lines in one of the songs...something about "but I won't go all the way". It probably went over my youngest childs head...but still worth mentioning. My youngest will probably want to get the soundtrack, and my daughter really enjoyed it.

Just a little more hairspray...
We watched it in band, in 7th grade, and we all sang along to the songs. Great movie,Great message. Look past looks. I love the ending too!

Great, toe-tapping fun, but some innuendos
It's a superb film, but the one scene in Wilbur's shop when Velma wants to seduce Wilbur is slighlty innaproite.
- I rate this title iffy for age 10 and give itMy concerns are:
- Inappropriate language
- My highlights are:
- Good role models
great for older kids
it's a very good movie. there isn't much violence. the only sex is mrs. von tussel coming onto mr. turnblad and different people kissing and brief and very very mild sexual references. some cursing mostly mild. teen smoking scenes as well as adults. good positive clean messages against racism. john travolta has a great funny character different from his "pulp fiction" personality.
- I rate this title on for age 8 and give itMy concerns are:
- Excessive consumerism
- My highlights are:

Sweet, addictive musical with a lot of heart
The character of Tracy Turnblad sets an amazing example for audiences of all ages - she stands up for African-American rights, stands up for her friends, and is an all-around good citizen. There are some mild insults about weight problems, race, and a few others. But for the most part, this movie is fun and fast-paced. It wasn't my kind of movie, but I'm sure audiences of all ages will enjoy.
- I rate this title on for age 6 and give itMy concerns are:
- Drinking, smoking, or drug use
- My highlights are:

A good movie!
This movie is appropriate for the family because it has good role models(Tracy, who stands up for African-americans). It's just that teenagers were smoking in the girls' bathroom underaged and some language isn't the best for some kids. But if you tell your kids not to swear, they probably won't.

Don't see it!!!!!!!
Everybody loved this movie. All anyone could talk about was "HAIRSPRAY!!!" Unfortunately. When I finally saw it, I was shocked. There are so many little innuendos that you won't catch the first time you see it, and especially in songs! Since this is a dance movie, OF COURSE there are inappropriate dance moves!!!! THere's also a song on the soundtrack that makes fun of people calling them "nerds" and saying "she's got cooties"! And finally, there is a TON of racial slurs, it being a product of its time. These can only be a problem if your children don't realize what happened in the 60's. Bottom line, DON"T SEE IT!

A MUST SEE!!!!!!!!
I saw this movie with a few friends my mom and my little sister back when it was in theaters and we all enjoyed it. the songs are catchy and it has an overall positive message. My bff's little sister saw the movie when it came out on dvd. her little siser is four and she loves and she also can't stop singing the songs to this day. this is a great movie that everyone should she and could learn something from.

Think twice about it!
It was really good. Although teens use bad language A LOT in this film, and there is some police arguments and a lot of "French Kissing", this film was a great musical, but there is a lot of bullying, as well, and Tracy and her mother are teased by their "Weight Problem" which they don't even have a big weight problem after all!
- I rate this title on for age 8 and give it
I loved it!
It was cute and had a great message. I think 8+ is a good age. There is breif language. A story about a chubby girl who gets the guy, because she is good on the inside, A african american girl (when negros were treated unfairly) winning the prize, and freedom. The movie tell children (and adults) that no matter how you look, it's what's on the inside that counts.

My favorite movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My sisters asked me to come and see Hairspray with them when it first came out in theaters. I had mever seen the 1988 version, but I decided to give it a chance. It turned out to be the greatest movie! I believe that it is appropriate for a decent amount of people, but some might be iffy for the younger, younger kids.
