Didn't like this one...
I watched this movie with an open mind, but really didn't enjoy it at all. I realize that not all movies have to have a message, but this movie wasn't funny either. A dysfunctional family (to say the least) travels across the country to have their daughter participate in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. The family was very concerned to get their daughter to the pageant on time, but only the drug addicted grandfather took the time to prepare her -- of course, a recipe for disaster. The daughter was embarassed at the end, which was "solved" in the movie by the family making complete idiots of themselves. I found no value in the movie at all -- not entertaining and a total waste of time.

Complex, darkly funny, satisfying movie
Little Miss Sunshine is a send-up and a celebration of family life. There's Mom just barely holding things together, Dad being an unacknowledged failure, a comic grandpa, a sweet little girl, a taciturn brother and an "odd" (to say the least) uncle. We've seen it all before...but this movie is at its best showing us why we all find these formulas so compelling in the first place - while turning the formula on its head. It includes great comic performances, difficult situations and an overall spirit of "we're all in this together, no matter how messed up things are". If you can't laugh at the difficult and absurd situations life throws at you, all you can do is cry. And it's better to laugh! So see this movie - and laugh!!

I dont get it
I really cant understand how this movie got such good reviews, I hated it from beginning to end. The only good spot in the movie was when the grandfather died, I was thinking if this could only happen to the rest of the family it would at least have a happy ending for me. One of the worst movies I have ever suffered through.

Tender and Quirky
After seeing this film myself, I decided to let my 12 year old son see it. He watched it several times and has initiated discussion about it with me. Discussions about Olive's sweetness and innocence. About how very much the grandfather loved Olive in spite of his drug use and bad language. No other reviewr has mentioned the soundtrack, but it is exceptional and softens the film even more. The striptease, I must add, is done with such innocence and charm. Olive is entirely unaware of the significance of the music or the moves. She's just out there doing the dance that her grandfather worked up. Pudgy, average-looking Olive shows more self-confidence and strength than all the other "beauty" pageant girls. It is a DELIGHTFUL movie!

Brilliant road-movie
Even thought this film was incredibly short and ended very quickly, it cramed in an awful lot of comparisons with American Beauty and themes withing the film. I enjoyed this a lot. Firstly, the interaction between each family member seemed very familar to me and the take on American family life was particularly interesting. To me, at times it was showing a unique portryal of life as we might not have seen it. The performances of Greg Kinnera, Toni Collette, Steve Carrel and little Abigail Breslin where all amazing and really made the film what it is. Using the beauty pagent, one of America's favourite past-times and almost taking the mickey out of it made it useful for european audiences and certainly this is not done in the usual Hollywood film. It shows that the pagent is a farce and not every American agrees with it, as seen in the movie with all the characters. Overall, a brilliant comedy whch is certainly worth the watch. You'll certainly empathise with a lot of the characters and perhaps the family as a whole. I think this wil get some oscar nominations in January

Amazing movie!
This was an amazing movie, but it has too much swearing, drug references and talk about sex and suicide for kids under 17.

If you can get by the language, you'll love it.
Despite what some have written about this movie, I loved it, and so has everyone I've talked to. The boy (Dwanye) and girl (Olive) steal the movie from some very competant actors. You really care for these people throughout the film. Grampa (Alan Arkin) is a heroin addicted, sex crazed, nut, but his love for Olive and the others comes forth by the end of the film. The father battles his own failings all the while preaching his positive thinking program. The ending is a bit on the far fetched side, especially the "talent" competition at the "Little Miss Sunshine" pagent, but thankfully it's over fairly quick. This is a can't miss movie.

Not a Disney-feel-good movie, but a human feel-good movie
Every character in this movie seems to be struggling with everyday life. Everyone wishes for a better life, and tries a different way of achieving that goal. While the little girl was delightful, my attention tended to focus on the teenage boy. He is a determined, disciplined boy who is also sweet and considerate. I admit I was alarmed by the grandfather's drug use, but that was my own bias - drug abuse is not just by teens. The family in this movie is not the cliched and pretty movie family, but a real, human group that pulls together.

A for acting; F for values; C+ for entertainment
the tide of superficiality, coarseness and lack of conscience is pretty scary in our american culture...it continues to grow. That movie represents how far we have sunk into the coarseness and acceptance of crudity and crassness, and then some critics have the audacity to present it as comedy. Why are our young folks lacking values and direction???....well guess what, perhaps it is because we condone messages like that and don't have the courage to speak up and question others' values. It also tells us how hungry americans are for some fun and laughter ...and therefore will laugh at almost anything without thinking who it is hurting. It is NOT okay or funny when a perverted, drug addict grandfather tells his 15 year old grandson to fuck as many women as he can and when he influences his little grand daughter (who by the way, parents allowed to sleep in his room with him and did not even ask about what is he teaching her, yuck!!)...a perverted old coot who influences her by teaching her to dance in an almost lewd way so that he can thumb his nose at society...and then the family gets up on the stage and dances like she does to "save her"...guess who won? Yes, the dead Grandfather left his skewed values for us to find cute and funny. I'm sorry....that is not funny and when I have said to people "think about it" this little light of awakening seems to turn on. That family should have led her off the stage and comforted her and taken her to a dancing and acting school . I really am for happy endings and solutions. So that film leaves us with a sense of "Wow , that was funny!!" and then....wait a minute, it WAS a pretty serious subject and pretty dark. The funny part was the car and pushing it...and then that got old. When I have talked to about 7 people lately about that film , I say, tell me what was funny? And they begin to wake up and see that they are being brainwashed into condoning this. No wonder folks in other countries think we have lost it. Good theater has always been a forum for looking at good and evil and all that is in between and having good dialog...taking it to a deeper level to get past the superficial. If we Americans go down the tubes (and maybe we already have) it will be due to that lack of depth and meaning ...maybe we are trying to find it I am not afraid to try to wake up some of the younger ones before I die....and don't you be afraid either. We still have a lot of juice and people do listen.

I vomited
This movie is like a haggis. It is something that many people have heard about, talked about and perhaps even tasted. But how many houses do you go in to and find haggis in the refrigerator. If you like oatmeal boiled in a sheeps stomach then you will like this movie. This is not an original screenplay...it's a bad knock off of National Lampoons Summer Vacation! Suitable for adults with the maturity of most 10 year olds.

Loved it!
I don't think teens under 14-15 would even enjoy this flick, so not much to worry about there. I LOVED this movie and while the social behavior (stealing a body, suicide attempt) is zany or serious, the message and family dynamic is a great lesson for all families. I loved it! It's a great story of family support, being yourself, and accepting who you are.

Liked it, but more in need of a PG-13 rating instead of an R one. This & Austin Powers should switch ratings. BTW, just saw it & it didn't kill me(look @ my age).

Brilliant!
it has a great theme, a troubled family on a road trip and has a great ending. me and my sister both loved this film and think it should be a good family film. the grandad swears a lot and takes drugs, only shown once. 5 stars!

i cried and i luaghed
i really liked this movie. though it said quite a few bad words.... like the "f" word, it was a very good movie. there was some drugs in it... but it showed what could happen to you if you use it. it shows us that we allways have our family... and that our life isn't allways perfect. it also shows that you cant win everything... but atleast give it a try. it does have some sexual content in it so i dont encourage this movie for anyone under the age of 10. other than that is is an awesome movie.

An excellent movie that can be watched over and over again...
I absolutely loved this movie. It entertained me from start to finish and is never stupid or overdone. It is "R" rated, but I'd like to add that I saw this at fourteen and survived. There is no actual sex, but porn magazine covers are glimpsed and it is discussed, while not in a graphic manner. There is some disrespectful and offensive material coming out of grandpa's mouth, and many characters mutter the "f" word freely. I think the language is what got this movie the "R". The drug content is there, but it isn't gratuitous and I never understood what was so bad about seeing drugs on TV. How does is affect anyone? It's an excellent movie every parent should see and perhaps eventually show their kids, because its fun and makes you cry and laugh at the same time. An excellent dramedy with a message about the world. The characters are clear and well-acted. A good movie. Watch it.

Hilarious!
This movie was hilarious to me but i know some people wouldn't agree. One of the characters is homosexual, and their is discussion of suicide. But overall it's a great movie!

A great, heart-warming movie
This is my favorite movie, and it had a great plotline. Many adults are/were worried about the drugs, sex etc, but I thought it was totally fine. Yes, there is a crude grandfather, yes, unethical events do occur, yes it deals with issues, like suicide and weight trouble, but it all creates the dusfunctional family that is the heart of this movie. I actually think 14 plus kids are totally fine for this movie. Your child won't learn anything new in this movie, and it certianly does not display the drugs and sex as cool. Overall I think the message, which was given in a non-cheesy way, was truly outstanding for those mature enough to watch it. I saw it with my mom, and it remains one of our favorite nights out. If you're worried about the movie, I recommend seeing it with your kids, as it's more likely to be meaningful. This movie is R for mature issues, not anything horribly explicit.

For all the people who don't like this movie...
...there must be something wrong with you. Little Miss Sunshine is such an unbelievably good movie. From the opening sequence to hilarious dance to the final shot, it never feels overdone or stupid. It gives you a warm, happy feeling inside. You laugh while you want to cry. It's just amazing. As for the content (who cares?), it's got some f-words, but nothing too bad. You also see the grandfather do drugs. However, anyone eleven and up should see this.

Should have been rated PG-13
