This is an amazing movie. It shows the meaning of love. My only thing, is that it takes awhile to get into, for some people. There is a stripper scene, but its nothing drastic. There are gay couples, but I don't see how that would be a problem for anyone.

So good...:)
This movie seemed really different from a lot of movies I'd seen. Showing the darker side of life for once isn't such a bad thing....as long as the subject matter isn't too much. There's drug use, a character who is a stripper, and characters dying of AIDS. But the overall message was positive, it seemed to me, conveying a message of hope even in tough circumstances. In particular, I thought the attitude toward homosexuality was great: they showed gay and lesbian couples as just as normal as heterosexual ones, even healthier, at times. And the music was great.

I was mesmerized!
I was mesmerized by the excellent performances, the music, the harmonies, and the subject matter. Unfortunately, the subject matter kept causing me to ask "Why can't they get real jobs and pursue their creative/artistic passions on the side?" The filmmaker in the end actually does this so that he can pay the rent. It seemed to me like misery loves company and thus they hung together in a melancholic, bittersweet attempt to care for each other. It seemed sad and very pathetic to me. Also, due to the scene in the restaurant, in particular, and the scenes where someone mimicked shooting up, I thought that the movie ought to have been either NC-17 or R. 13/14 year old just doesn't need to see this movie without an adult. Although, I am aware that some of our teens are experiencing this type of thing and more. In that case, I don't think they need to be more inundated by it for entertainment.

fabulous. But not for preadolescents
This movie is the best I have seen. I let my 15 year old go and she loved it. But the 12 year old? no way. The pole dancing scene (where she grabs at her crotch) is way beyond what I think is appropriate. Also, a 12 year old doesnt need to see someone shooting up with heroin. But what a great movie, and one that started a great conversation about love.

Inspirational and a moving film that will change your life
RENT is about 8 friends who face the harsh poverty areas of New York City. In the film they learn they must face the relationship struggles and have to face the AIDS/HIV+ Disease. Drugs are portrayed as an issue where we see Mimi's beautiful life destroyed by heroin addiction. The strife that the characters had to endure was sad and hard to. One relationship used as a model for everyone, Angel and Collins', is a relationship between a gay man and a drag queen. They have a beautiful and loving relationship, and their song "I'll Cover You" shows the ideal of love. But the relationships in this movie show nothing but strong love and commitment. The Music is excellent. It gives a lasting impression and keeps you singing these songs forever more. The main messages of this film are friendship and loyalty. This is a must see film that everyone will enjoy.

Loved it
When I first saw this movie I was 10 and I really wasn't getting into it. I thought it was boring. I watched it again telling myself that I was going to really think and enjoy and I did. The strife that the characters had to endure was sad but the entire movie was very heartwarming.

A beautiful movie with a positive message
This is a great movie. While parents may initially be concerned over the drugs and sexual content of the movie, it's treated beautifully. Drugs are portrayed as an issue -- we see Mimi's beautiful life destroyed by heroin addiction, and in the end she recovers -- it's always made clear that heroin is nothing but bad for her. Sex is treated pretty lightly by the characters because they live a bohemian lifestyle. But the relationships in this movie show nothing but strong love and commitment. The one relationship used as a model for everyone, Angel and Collins', is a relationship between a gay man and a drag queen. They have a beautiful and loving relationship, and their song "I'll Cover You" shows the ideal of love, two partners caring for and helping each other. Roger and Mimi's relationship is difficult throughout due to Mimi's drug abuse, but eventually that issue is resolved and they find their way together. Maureen and Joanne's relationship is a great anti-stereotype of lesbian relationships -- neither of them is a typical butch or femme lesbian, and neither defines herself by her sexuality. Overall, the movie's portrayal of love and sexuality is a hugely positive message. Another great message is friendship, as these friends grow into a family together. When younger kids (and older, really) see this, what will trouble them the most will probably not be the sex, drugs, or language, but the sadness of the story. A main character dies, another one struggles with drugs, most of the characters have AIDS, and the characters' relationship struggles are intense and hard to deal with. Yes, most people will cry when watching this movie. But the ending of it is so uplifting and positive that you can't help but love it. In my opinion, this is a great movie to watch with your kids, or to let them watch. If you want to discuss it with your kids after, you can talk about relationships and how drugs can hurt your relationships with your loved ones. You can also talk about friendship and loyalty -- the main messages of the film.

INCREDIBLE FILM!!!!!! MESMERIZING!!!
This is my favorite movie by far! its incredible and shows a strong meaning of love with one character playing a huge part in this! I cried at the end when something horrible happens to one of the best characters. Even though this is a musical, and keep that in mind when choosing this movie because there are a lot of songs each better than the last, it gives a lasting impression and keeps you singing these songs forever more. Even today at my lunch table we all randomly broke out into one of the songs from this incredible film. By far deserves 500 stars!

Not Just A Movie, An Experience
This movie has changed my life. It is not really appropriate for kids under age 12, although i saw it when i was 11. I didn't understand a lot of the content, but i do now. So i suggest waiting till you are at least 12 or 13 because you will understand a lot more and enjoy a lot more. You will laugh, you will cry, Lots of drug use, swearing and some inappropriate other scenes, but if you can get past that, there is a wonderful message about true friendship, true love and true diversity that we can all learn from.

It's kinda iffy...
I love musicals, so naturally I love this movie. Some of the content is inappropriate, such as lyrics to a few of the songs.

love it
my best friend and i love it to the ends of the earth. so yeah, it has gays and straights and bad language, but the music is wonderful and it spreads a good message. they say to live each day up to the fullest and to go after your dreams. so yeah, theres drinking and smoking and drug use, but its rated R for a reason (even though for some reason the DVD is rated pg-13 with nothing censored) but it also shows the downside to drug use. it has people with aids that suffer for their mistakes and enforces the fact that drugs are never good. but the homosexuality in the movie cant be much of a problem, even though you see two actresses groping each others butts, but thats just not right for the screen if it was gay or straight. but the rating and the quality shouldn't be changed because of this, thats just homophobic right there. but as i say a lot, it depends on who's watching it. i think mostly teens should watch it, and maybe just a few scenes are good for the younger kids too. but the biggest factor is the parents and what they tell their kids about drugs, sex and all that other negative stuff. so... the rating is perfect for this movie, and i recommend perants who may not feel comfortable with some of these things watch it with their kids so they know what they're taking in.

Rent is a must see!!
Yes, rent is very innapropriate at times, but the message is one that true love is strong no matter what gender you are or what you belive or your bad qualities. I don't think the fact that there is a gay and lesbian couple change the appropraiteness, there is nothing morally wrong or innapropriate about that. Also, the people do have aids and take drugs, but those are real issues in the world. I recommend this movie to mature 11 years old and up. Don't watch if under 11 or 12.

a must-see!!!!!
I first saw this movie when it first came out (i was about 13 or 14) and fell in lover with it. I think this is a great movie because it doesn't sugar-coat anything. It is a very real movie that will make you laugh and cry the whole time. I related to every single character in some way. I think that you should judge the maturity of your child rather than your age. The movie does show homosexual male and female couples kissing, but only to re-enforce their love for each other. The negative effects of drugs used in the movie are very graphic and in no way encourage their use. Appropriate for 14+

the BEST movie in the world
if people would listen to the music instead of hearing it and pay attention they would see more than "exotic dancers" (not strippers), and smack, they would see this movie based off of the late musical genius jonathan larsons modern-day la boheme set in late 80's east village NY with young, raw charicters going through such feelings as love and loss. we can identify with these charicters. and Adam Pascal is REALLLLLY hot

I know almost every word to all the songs
I LOVE this movie. Sure, it has bad stuff, but the message is great. The songs have great harmonies, like Your What You Own. At the end, when Angel dies, it shows true love. I would reccomend it, but only if yuo can handle it!

Amazing!
I am an older high school student. I saw this just last year, and fell in love with it. I highly recommend it, but only for kids about 13 and above. I would also make sure your kid understands about homosexuality, drugs, and AIDS.

This is a great musical if your child is old enough to handle it.
This movie ends up teaching you good morals. It is a little hard to handle if your child is not mature. There are drugs scenes. It also does talk a lot about HIV and Aids.

A Brilliant Movie
This movie was amazing. The musical also was too. I highly reccomened it, although you should probably watch it with your kids; it's a really good way to discuss love, homosexuality, and other important topics. There are some sexual scenes, like Out Tonight (Mimi's a dancer, and at one point she touches herself,) and La Vie Boheme (a lot of the lyrics contain sexual words, and some sexual actions- for example, during 'sodomy', two characters, both fully clothed, perform actions, and when another another character sings 'dildos', a woman mimes sodomizing another character. Oh, also there is mooning.) But the music is amazing, and the message is very important. Also, there is a character seen several times in drag. This character, Angel, is a beautiful person, and you should talk to your kids how it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, it matters how you act and what you're like on the inside. VIVA LA VIE BOHEME!

good movie
It was sort of like one long music video. Really good. Sad too. It wasn't the best movie ever, but I think it's great for 13 and up.

No day but today!
I love this movie with a passion. It is a beautiful story. As for the homosexuality, so what! The love portrayed was true love! Plus, it is a realistic story. The music was incredible and so were the actors. Just know how mature your child is. Look up the lyrics to the song "La Vie Boheme" and think if you want your child to hear that. I personally love it and suggest everyone watch it.

Amazing.
This movie is one of the best films I have seen. Sure, it might be cheesy for some, and risque for others... But, it's still a great movie. Some kids may be immature and laugh at the fact that Angel is a crossdresser, or Collins and Angel are gay. Some boys may swoon at the fact that Maureen and Joanne are in a relationship. But, besides that, it is a good way to teach and learn about sex, HIV/AIDS, and drug use. Most of this movie is dissaproving the use of drugs, unprotected sex, and other things that matter in our society. It's an amazing movie, with amazing music, and if you're a broadway fan, or just love artistic and musical talent, watch this movie.

i thought it was the best movie that i have ever seen because it tells you not to do drugs and not to drink. That is why i like this movie

This is a very good movie. One of the highest points is the music. It will appeal to many different tastes. As for content, I am rather surprised this movie is not rated R. There are many drug users, drinkers, and smokers, along with many vitims of HIV, and one sad death from AIDS. There is also a character who pole dances in a strip bar, and partial nuditiy. There are also realistic scenes of herion withdrawl and usage. There are gay and lesbian couples, who kiss, and one transexual. I would say 15 and up, and mature 13 and 14 yearolds. Overall, this is a extrememly good movie.

I cried!
Rent is one of the best musicals ever. I don't really like the whole story, but the music is amazing. My favorite song is either Seasons of Love or Light My Candle or maybe even One Song Glory. I don't really reccomend this for kids younger than 12. (They might not get who Angel is.) But at least buy the CD. And if you're very emotional, you'll cry a lot! I know I did!

Spectacular!
This is a great movie for everyone. Alot of adults might think its way inappropriate because it has gay, transgender, and lesbian characters and junkies and sutff but if you want your kid to be informed about HIV, and drugs and stuff, they should watch this. The music is great, all the actors are extremely talented. I give this 5 stars.
