Why We Rated This on for Ages 6 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

The moral is that "it's not the size of the wingspan that counts, but the size of the spirit".

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

The falcons may frighten small kids. Lots of talk about death and the probability of dying in battle. One character appears to die, and characters are in peril for most of the movie. Explosions and gunfire during battle, fighting, birds held hostage in cages, and dead stuffed pigeons are shown.
  • Sexy stuff:

Some innocent bird "pecking" and a brief shot of a pin-up bird wearing a bikini.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Scenes in a bar.

What Parents Need to Know

About Valiant

Parents need to know that this movie takes place during WWII and a lot of time is spent focusing on possible death in battle -- some of it put in upsetting terms, such as characters being told that their "innards will be spread like jam on toast" when they are killed. Some parents might not be comfortable with the movie's focus on war. The falcons may frighten small children. One character appears to die, and characters are in peril for most of the movie. There are explosions and gunfire during battle, lots of fighting, birds being held hostage in cages, and bones of dead birds shown. We also see dead birds that have been stuffed. A bird is injected with truth serum. There is some toilet humor involving burping and passing gas. Since this is a British production voiced by British actors, kids may have a hard time understanding all of the dialogue. They will also probably miss most of the references to WWII.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about WWII since the reasons for the war are never explained and the movie assumes some knowledge of the events -- many of the jokes revolve around references to the war. Parents with younger kids can focus on the message that "it's not the size of the wingspan that counts, but the size of the spirit". They could also point out to kids that the film was inspired by the fact that pigeons saved thousands of lives during the war, and that 31 of the 53 top honors given to animal heroes went to pigeons.

    not that great

A little over the heads of most children. It is basically a WWII film in animation. The information at the end of the film about how animals aided in the war was interesting, but in my opinion a true documentary would've done their memory better service than this piece. Lots of scary stuff for the little ones, so I would save it for the older kids.

appropriate but, boring to my child

I took my daughter to see this and she got bored. She was able to watch the whole movie but, she asked when it was over, barely halfway through the movie! I thought it was pretty appropriate and entertaining to me. At the end of the movie, my daughter said " I don't want to buy that movie." ( I wanted it! =) )

NOT WORTH SPENDING $35 TO GO SEE

This movie was NOT (I repeat: NOT) worth seeing in theaters. It was boring, unrealistic, senseless, a snOre. If you are about 6and younger, you MIGHT (probably not) waste your time renting it. My basic point: Don't waste your time and $ seeing this Snoozer.

It's a WWII film spoof lost on kids

It's quite alright. But only if you've already seen a dozen black and white WWII films, preferrably stiff English ones. Otherwise, there isn't enough there for the kids. Mine I think were bored (though the always express gratitude for going to a real movie). It's a spoof really, but parody only works if you know what's being goofed on.

    No thanks!

I don't appreciate war propaganda aimed at preschoolers.

    Older kids or adults perhaps

This seems more like an older child type of movie, if not perhaps an adult oriented mild, sort of cartoon. It has some funny parts, but it is not easy for a young child to catch it all as being funny to them.
