Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that although these two stories are about Valentine's Day, the second contains a few very mild scares in an eerie forest, where Pooh and the gang are briefly separated and lost.

Families can talk about why Pooh makes his decision at the end of A Valentine for You. Is it hard to share your friends sometimes? Why is it important to give friends their space to make new friends? Can it be a way for you to make new friends too? Is it scary to get lost? What did Pooh and friends do when they got lost? What should you do if you get lost?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Teresa Talerico

A sweet double feature starring Winnie the Pooh and friends, this DVD combines two Valentine's Day stories perfect for little ones. By far, the more touching cartoon is A Valentine for You, in which residents of the Hundred Acre Wood fret when they catch Christopher Robin writing a Valentine to a girl named Winifred. Pooh and the gang fear that Christopher will abandon them in favor of his new friend. Rabbit proclaims that Chris has been "bitten by a smitten" and has love sickness. So the animals embark on a quest for a smitten (a member of the "love bug" family), which they believe can re-bite Christopher and thus release him from his lovesick condition.

Their journey is by turns silly (the gang presents Piglet, dressed in a gentleman caller's attire and holding a bouquet of flowers, as "smitten bait") and scary (Pooh and friends get lost deep in an ominous forest). When Pooh does capture a smitten in a jar, they must decide whether to let Christopher enjoy his newfound happiness or try to turn him into the boy he "once was." A touching moment occurs when Christopher explains to Pooh that he'll always love him.

In contrast to its more sentimental companion, Un-Valentine's Day is full of slapstick fun. Rabbit has decided to cancel Valentine's Day because there were simply too many cards last year. Pooh and friends gamely try to abide by his rule, but when Pooh finds a Valentine's Day honey jar on his doorstep, he assumes it's from Piglet and decides that he must reciprocate. This sets off a chain of Valentine-giving that has Rabbit in a tizzy and everyone trying to figure out who started the Valentine frenzy in the first place. The DVD also includes the short, "The Three Little Piglets," a comical take on "The Three Little Pigs."

Families with preschoolers who enjoyed this DVD might also like Pooh's Grand Adventure or Pooh's Heffalump Movie.

Not letting jealousy get the best of you. Accepting that a good friend will still be in your life even if they make new friends. Reciprocating when a friend does something nice for you. While the characters are good-hearted, Rabbit is a little bossy.
