I wasn't sure how I was going to feel when I first got this movie, but after I viewed it I decided that overall it wasn't a bad movie. There is some violence that might scare children under 10. Also there are a few instances of bad language. I also think that the older sister, played by Kristin Stewart, is portrayed as a little uncaring and unresponsible.

Good for 10 and up.
- I rate this title on for age 9 and give itMy concerns are:
- Excessive violence
- Inappropriate language
After I got past a very inappropriate word being used in the first 2 minutes of the movie, I felt that it was an engaging adventure somewhat appropriate for my 8 year old. The movie is suspenseful more than it is scary, however, I will say that the part with the Zorgon lizard species gets a bit intense. I think younger viewers would be frightened by the constant action. Although I let my 8 year old watch it, I think it is more appropriate for slightly older viewers.

Can lead to long-term nightmares
My 6 year old son, who tends to "think too much," was terrified by this movie and actually had recurring nightmares for MONTHS after watching it. It plays a little too scary with that line between dreams and reality for younger kids. Lots of violence and extremely scary images and concepts. Make sure your child can handle this before letting them watch it - even consider watching it yourself first to make "the call."

e.g. Perfect for older kids, but not for tweens
Way too scary for my 5-year-old in the theater. We had to go behind the wall in the foyer because it was so intense, but he didn't want to leave. I wanted him to see it had a good ending at least, if was ok with sticking it out, so I agreed to stay. All kids are different, but I thought it was one we could have waited a few years on.

Terrifying.
I watched this when I was in my mid teens, I think, and it still terrifies me to this day! Would not recommend it for anyone easily scared, especially by space adventures. This may be a spoiler, but Zathura is a black hole-- absolutely terrifying especially after that whole nightmare "game" to get there. I would not let my kids watch this one.

Loved It!
My son was sitting on the edge of his seat and loving this movie. I didn't like some of the language and the zorgons were a little too scary for my liking, but he really loved it. I will buy and edit out the language myself, and we'll all be happy. :)

Fun for kids
I thought this was great fun. A lot like Jumanji but entirely its own as well. May be a little scary for the real little kids but very enjoyable overall.

One of our favorites!
This movie was a delight, despite some language. My highly imaginative, thrill-seeking 6-yr-old son absolutely adored this movie! He watched it several times during our rental and wanted to buy it. My 8-yr-old daughter liked it a lot too, but not to the same degree, mainly due to boyish subject. Although I say it is better for 8+, I only do so for the general public. If your 6 or 7 year-old isn't super-sensitive, and you can deal with a few bad words, this movie is fine for them. Especially boys! Fun for parents to watch too!

enjoyable
I watched this movie with my husband and not my kids. I forgot about the language until I read the reviews here. They're right. They could have had the kids use different words. The movie is just scary enough for the 8 and older but not boring for adults. All in all, I thought it was entertaining. The youngest boy was adorable. I would talk to my kids about how the brothers treated each other. Sometimes kids learn from other kids negative behavior. Say something like, "I'm glad you two don't treat each other like that!" The ending was redemptive though.

Language, violence unbefitting PG rating
Think "Jumanji" but with a space theme. It's a good basic story. Unfortunately Hollywood got its mits on it. Is the B word (think female dog) now permitted in PG movies? How about young characters calling each other names such as the, well, formerly the shortened name for Richard? And do I really need to mention how many times "suck" was used...and I don't mean in reference to a vacuum. This movie had great potential. Its characters are young, its story captivating, but it was too violent and too derogatory for young children. Take out the slang and you've got potential for an 8+ movie.

I was shocked....
The language in this movie by the kids was absolutely shocking. If my 9 year old son said things like these kids said, I would wash his mouth out with soap. And the saddest part is, it added nothing to the enjoyment of the movie. The whole theater seemed shocked to hear such language from young boys. The story of this movie is very reminiscent of Jimangi.(spelling?) I would recommend seeing Jamangi over this movie.

Kids & Teens Will Love It!
We took two teens (13 & 14) to see this and they LOVED it! Couldn' stop talking about how great it was. It did have a lot of action and some surprizes along the way...quite suspenseful too. May be a bit intense for a younger group.

I thought Zathura was going to be a lame rip-off of Jumanji. It wasn't, it actually was an entertaining family film. Good for one viewing, maybe a rental. Good for kids:A mature 7+

A fun space ride!
This movie is so clasical and fun. It has a very important lesson in it. The only problem I have in this movie is the language the boys were saying. It's vey inapropriate. But the movie is still great.
