It's not syrupy... It's a must-see, and the book is even better!
Well, since the site review isn't all that helpful I guess that means it's totally up to us, the reviewers, to let you, the readers, know more about this movie. Don't worry because we offer a much more detailed account of what is good and... not so good about this movie. :) Not so good stuff first. There is not anything absolutely horrible that if your children saw it you would say, "Oh dear goodness! What are my children watching?!" For the first part of the movie, the sort of introduction to the story if you will, that's where most of the language comes from. It is surprisingly strong for a PG movie: the main usage is s--- as well as a few occurrences of a-- and h---. As far as sexual stuff goes it isn't mushy gushy or much like that. Being the reverend's daughter, Jamie (Mandy Moore) doesn't allow that. Most of the references come from Landon's friends. This mainly includes a part where one of them acts out certain sexual movements that Common Sense won't let me put here because it is "just not our style" (this only lasts a few seconds but is still so suggestive that younger kids should probably not see it). A few sweet kisses are shared as well, but are not an issue. Now for the good stuff (and there's a lot of it!) Jamie's father is the reverend of the town and is very overprotective of her, but he just wants to keep her safe and wants the best for her. Jamie is very religious and constantly helps others. Landon (Shane West) starts off as a troubled young man but progresses into someone a parent would be very proud of. The chemistry between the two (West and Moore) is very realistic. They are an outstanding example of what a good couple should be. Their relationship is not centered around sex; they genuinely care for each other. Throughout the movie Jamie works to complete a list of things she would like to do before she dies, and Landon helps her out along the way. But when a devastating secret is uncovered, the two must find a way to work it out. They also have to figure out what will happen to who they are. And may I just say: Shane West is absolutely gorgeous! :) Feel free to check out my other reviews! Maybe you'll find something you like... I hope you do!
