I liked that his movie was a drama and not a cartoon, or comedy for kids. This movie had all of us on the edge of our seats at the very end. My 6yo lost interest and was playing on the iPod by the end of the movie. But for my 8yo and husband we loved this and will be watching it again. The language mention of s!@t at the beginning was quick and nothing my kid haven't over heard from other adults!
Our family watched it last night and loved it. Yes there were a couple of words my children are not allowed to use, but they hear those words on the school bus anyway, and at least this provided an opportunity to remind them that those words are unacceptable. I think it was good to see that all children do not grow up with the benefits that they (our children) have, and that by working hard you can achieve positive outcomes.
Disney Channel version recommended for younger audiences
This movie is a clean family movie for most, however, if you have kids younger then 8 (CSM's target age), check out Disney Channel and see when they are playing it.
I had to practically force the family to sit down to watch this one....a movie about a spelling bee, cmon mom what were you thinking? But it's like any other traditional sports movie, with an amazing happy ending. My boys (8 and 10) were hooked within the first 20 minutes, and we all stayed up past bedtime. Very well done!
Great movie, but it contains inappropriate language. There are two scenes where a girl kisses a boy, and one scene where the boy says "Are you going to sue me for sexual harassment?". In one scene the main character is getting bullied at school. These things made me uncomfortable at first but there were some very positive messages and good karma.
I took three kids with me to the movie: age 9, 11, & 12. All three loved the movie as did I. It has a wonderful message about it being okay to be smart and to be "different" because of being bright. The acting was wonderful. I can't wait to go back and see it again.
My daughter is 8 and she "took" me to see this movie for Mother's Day. We both enjoyed it immensely, and got completely caught up in the drama of the competition. There were a few incidents of language that I felt were unnecessary, but those were manageable in talking to my daughter afterwards. Even more importantly, the film kicked off a great discussion about friendship and what it means to be a good friend. We also talked about taking risks, not being afraid to fail, and always doing your best. It was the best movie we've seen in ages.
It is just like "Searching for Bobby Fisher" only with spelling instead of chess. Wonderful film. My kids are 7 and 10, both loved it! I would highly recommend it for kids that age!
