My 2 year old surprised me by sitting through the entire movie. Usually he gets scared by this kind of thing and tells me to turn the movie off. About midway through he became very nervous about Alice getting her real cat back, so refused to stop watching until that happened. He generally likes silly stuff and word play, so I thought he might find some of that stuff funny, but he did not find this to be a funny movie at all. He seemed stressed throughout and very relieved at the end, when Alice does get her real cat back.
As a relatively conservative parent when it comes to what I will allow my children to watch, I give this one two thumbs up. Although I could have done without the smoking, name calling, and head bonks, overall, it's pretty harmless, and thoroughly entertaining. What I liked most is that the entire movie occurs inside of a dream, which is a good way to address with young children, these are all behaviors/things we don't do in real life. You can control a lot of what happens in real life, you cannot control what happens in your dreams. For my family, this movie has led to several great discussions on why smoking is harmful, how name calling is hurtful, and what kind of things we each dream about. The music is also wonderfully charming, and I enjoy how Alice is self sufficient in the movie....although she goes with strangers, and eats foods she probably shouldn't...at least she is not dependent on a man to achieve happiness!
If you're trying to find some (mostly) harmless entertainment for a 4+ kid, this is perfect for you. You may have noticed that a lot of movies on this site are for 8+, so it is hard to find stuff for the very young. Especially with Tim Burton's "Alice" out now, younger kids may be "curiouser", and this Disney telling is very safe.
The only think I'd like to mention is, in the scene with the "Walru
s and the Carpenter", the Walrus ends up eating some oysters he's just befriended. And thay are awfully cute in the Disney-anthropomorphic way. Because of this, I thought for sure he wouldn't eat them...but he did (off-screen).
My 5 year old didn't seem to mind though.
I love this movie - it is pure fun. Super creative, super imaginitive, and fun to watch. Be aware, that near the end, when the Queen of Hearts appears, be prepared for yelling/screaming by the queen (which bothered my kids, as well as her shouting constantly "Off with their heads!") Aside from that, the whole movie is definitely fun and vibrant and silly. Good fun!
Fantastic. I loved it. The songs, the whole story....amazing. That said, I bet you're all wondering if there's anything really bad. Not really.
A caterpillar smokes through a gian pipe. Obvious that he's in a bad mood, no doubt cause he smokes. (Jk)
Some funny threats of "Off with their heads!" from the Queen of Hearts, but the only thing slightly disturbing about the whole thing is how flippant she is with the punishment.
This is the story of a young girl who discovers drugs. She starts taking them and in the end they solve all of her problems. overall great lessons for kids to learn. Remember kids any problem caused by PCP can be solved with Cocaine.
I think this movie is not appropriate for kids at all. This movie seems like something someone on drugs or someone who is drunk would write and animate. There is a lot inappropriate language in this movie as well. The queen of hearts says several times, "off with her head," which is way too scary and abusive for kids. Also, there is some drug inuendo , like the hookah smoking caterpillar that repeats the vowls over and over and some of the others are shown smoking a pipe. I love little naive Alice who has no clue what drugs and alcohol are, she's so cute. But the inuendos in this make it so wrong for kiddos. I don't like this trippy movie that doesn't make any sense at all. I didn't even like it as a child. I remeber seeing the preview on Disney VHS tapes and hating it. This one deserves two thumbs way, way down!
Great imagination booster, but dreams can be scary
This is a fabulous movie for kids about 4 and up, who already talk about having dreams and generally love the world of phantasy! Others may be a bit scared of the queen and the idea of getting lost in a magic forest, so try it, but as always, watch your kids reactions. Our little one is 3 and a half and we are extremely picky with what she watches. She laughed out loud during the famous Un-Birthday Party! The queen, however, almost ruined the movie for us, as she was infamously screaming: Off with their heads! many times. She was quite scary for our little one, so next time we'll fast-forward her, but the rest of the movie was worth it for us. It added to our little one's already developed imagination and our puppet theater topics. We are glad we introduced it, we talk about it a lot, but our girl doesn't ask to watch it again, we read the book instead.
Some things in this movie are too intense for the under 5 crowd. My 4 year old was disturbed by the Queen of Hearts and wondered why Alice was so scared. We watched it once and took it back to the video store.
I, personally, didn't like this movie. It was clean, and it's a classic, but I nevertheless was creeped out by Tweedledee and Tweedledum (sp?) and also by the little oysters that got eaten. For some this might be a really good movie, but many of my friends share my opinion that it was creepy and somewhat dark (the cat and the queen). I'm not going to let my kids watch it until they're at least 8 or 9. If your kids have grown up with this sort of movie, however, it should be fine.
