The already forgotten 2005 Ammityville Horror remake really never gets all that much justice for what it did, because people pretty much forgot themselves, that when the original Ammityville horror film came out in 1979, critics universally bashed it, hated it and called it painfully un-scary. And than the remake came out that shockingly was actually a decent horror movie on it's own, and than acted as if the original film was some sort of revered horror masterpiece and that the remake had severely damaged it. Sure, I can understand the haste and annoyance when you found out that a awful old horror movie was being remade, but when it comes out and is actually a fairly good movie, the haters should lighten up a bit. What makes this remake so good is that of course, firstly, it is a lot better than the original film, but what really makes it so good is that the acting by Ryan Reynolds was fantastic. he really captured the fun and the joy of being in a horror movie, and being allowed to go completely bat-wing crazy. Sure, his performance is a scenery chewing, ridiculous spectacle, but how entertaining it is. Also, the atmosphere is all here, making this film actually scary, unlike the original, and providing the audience with more thrills and chills than they would think to expect, going into the movie. But, of course, this movie is obviously Rated R, so for the parents, here is the content: there is very, very frequent strong bloody horror violence and gore, with some very disturbing images of a prison cell full of deformed and tortured bodies, with one visible person in particular shown handing from the ceiling by fishhooks sticking through his chest. Also, the transformation of Ryan Reynolds character is very intense, and provides some very disturbing near-death scenes. Also, there is one graphic scene of sexuality, with bare backs, buttocks and chests visible. also, there is even one brief scene of a female babysitter smoking pot out of a bong. And, finally, there is infrequent but very strong profanity, with uses of words such as f--k, sh-t, d-mn, h-ll, g-dd-mn, a--h-le and more. So, if you still haven't seen this film because you think that it would soil the name of the "precious" original classic, than think again, because a horror movie like this which actually delivers it's fair share of thrills, chills and decent scares, actually deserves a little bit of respect.
