I have wanted to see phantom of the opera for a long time. It was really decent. There are some iffy parts. The way the Phantom has been treated as a young boy is a little disterbing for me and the way the phantom trys to kill is not my cup of tea. I will say this, in the end it is a great moive after all is said and done.

GREATEST MOVIE EVER.... A MUST WATCH
great music great movie wonderful story... after u watch it u feel ur heart is no longer one piece... the story is about glory beauty of the spirit that is not what the face looks like.... great morale through out the movie... -Violence: A character is killed dramatically Another is wounded A huge fire rises - Drinking: i remember one character drinking from a bottle probably vine - Smoking: one of the mangers of the opera smokes cigar and then gives it to a girl his laughing with to smoke it but the scene is cut before she has it - Sexually: 2 characters are seen in the background hugging and having a long kiss about 5 seconds the scene... characters still fully clothed and even the kiss is not visible seems like a hug One character when an opera singer he doesn't like passes by shows his bare butt.. A character when having his role in the opera touches the back of 2 girls and the crowd laughs and the manager says "this is the kind of thing the public loves" (though they're all fully clothed the first girl less than a second and the second one about 1 or 2 seconds) And as we read in the rating of the site above "Sexual undertones in the Phantom's obsession." the girl says to him that he's now more interested in flesh.. Later there's a kiss between the girl and her lover.. These are not things to worry about... the movie could be watched by an 11 or 12 year old... but in order to be liked and understood the person watching it must be at least 13 14 15... hope i helped u decide if it's appropriate NOT TO MISS GREATEST MOVIE EVER EVER EVER

A Haunting, Lucious, and Beautiful Achievement!
Coming from a long-time PHANTOM fan who has seen the play and listened to the music for SO long, I can say that the movie lived up to my expectations. Gerard Butler fell short of Michael Crawford's performance, but alone, when you're not comparing him to Crawford, he's great. The rest of the actors are spectacular, the visuals blow you out of your seat, and the opulent, breathtaking music has never sounded better. Questionable material: Violence and sex. The Phantom has some anger issues, and he strangles several people onscreen. He is abused as a child, and viewers might be disturbed by his childhood disfigurement and murder. The Phantom's obsession with Christine is very physical, and though nothing is shown, there is some sensuous touching (rubbing of arms and clothed stomachs) and mention of "when we're one". A man briefly moons Carlotta, and you see his bare behind. Language is some "d**ns" and "hells". Great, breathtaking film, though not for all.

It's almost really, really good.
But then you realize that it was made only for the money. Still, however, when you look past the raspy voices with their underwater quality, all the garish sets, costumes, and delightful melodrama are enough to keep you entertained for the flick's just-over-two-hours length. Advice, though: instead of wasting ten bucks on this, waste sixty on balcony seats for the touring show. It's much, much better.

We loved it.
The music is beautiful. The staging is lush. The casting superb, especially Butler and Rossum.

Opulent musical triumph will be too slow for younger teens
This musical is dark, and powerful. The scenery, the singing, and the choreography are dazzling and exciting. Parents should know that the Phantom's obsession with Christine is very predatorial, and some scenes are sexual, although non-explicitly. Younger kids may not notice this. There is one very violent and scary scene, but it is brief. Altogether, the film is haunting, and beautiful. Kids under 12 most likely won't understand it.

AWESOME
I have seen the stageplay in different cities and countries. The movie was a beautiful depiction and, though different in some aspects, gave more visual beauty to some surroundings and sound (horses hoofs on brick, and much more)

MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!
Bland? BLAND????? How could anyone in their right mind call Gerard Butler bland? As a (former) actress/singer/dancer, and a very hard-to-please one at that, I cannot remember the last time I was so utterly mesmerized by a performance so blazingly passionate and dead-on as that of Gerard Butler's. Do yourself a favor: don't listen to any negative reviews, and see this movie for yourself. It will blow you away.

This is not just another “Beauty and the Beastâ€Â!
In the fairy tale of the Beauty and the Beast, the beast is noble, but in this fantastic film, the Phantom is a conflicted murderer. In this story filled with diverse characters and dramatic presentation you come to know a young soprano haunted by a warped genius who wants to possess her. She then rediscovers true love in her childhood sweetheart Raoul, but the Phantom will not have her with any other. The film has beautiful presentation and a good storyline. Even if you don’t enjoy the acting or find the story a bit weird, you have to say something for the music which is a work of art in its own right. You might want to discuss how the Phantom wallows in his own self pity, not remembering how good Madam Geri has been to him. You can also notice how the Phantom must copy Raoul’s love song and is not able to come up with his own to sing to Christine. His own dark music ends when Christine breaks her bondage and escapes him by demonstrating her love for Raoul.

I love this movie
I love this movie. Parents should know that there is a very brief moon scene and some alcohol use. I don't think kids under 13 should watch this only because they might not get the story line.

Excellent
Excellent film. I haven't found anything inappropriate in it, except I don't think it would be very interesting to kids under 10.

One of my favorite movies of all time
It is beyond me why people criticize this movie on so many different sites. Sure, Gerard Butler is not the world's greatest singer, but he is still pretty good. Nor can I see why people say this is so violent: there is one violent scene where a guy is hanged but it's not THAT bad, and the next worst thing is when a guy a minor cut on his arm while swordfighting with the Phantom. Overall I think that this is a great movie and everyone should see it. It's well worth the money.

Bravo!!
My favorite musical, turned into a great movie! True there is some violence (the Phantom hangs two men, and comes very close to hanging a third). Not too much language. I saw it when I was in the first grade, didn't bother me at all.

okay, not as good as the play
it was okay, but defanitly not as good as the stage musical. I didn't like at some parts when the characters talked instead of singing, it didn't sound good. Overall, its fine for people 11 and up, i saw it when i was 11.

By far my favorite!
This movie is my favorite movie by far! It is well crafted and has some amazing music. There are a couple minor frightening scenes but they aren't that bad. I have read the book and seen the movie numerous times and each time I'm engrossed in it. A must see for all ages! Do beware that I have heard from multiple people that they were bored throughout the movie and it can be a bit dry at some parts (especially while he sings The Music of the Night) but I think its worth your time!

Great!
this intense musical was wonderful. The main characters can really sing, and I am a faithful lover of the soundtrack. The story itself is a tad weaker, though. It is basically about some insane abused dude who kills people and is obsessed with an opera singer. He calls himself the phantom, and his face is burned and gross, so he wears a mask all the time. Due to violence, confusing plot, and sex, not for youngsters. Let them hear the soundtrack and save the story with all its obsession glory to kids ages 12+

This is for you question askers
Ok, I've heard this question b4. At first his hair is black, then it's blonde. HE IS WEARING A WIG! Isn't that obvious? You'd have to be blind to not pick that up after a few minutes. His hair can't just magically change colors!

omg! how could you not love this movie!?!
This is an awesome movie if you like romantic movies! It IS a musical, but it is wonderful! The sex is nothing to be concerned about. In a couple of scenes, he caresses her face and neck, but that's it. It's really PG-13 for the violence, because he strangles three people, there is a swordfight with one cut on a guy's arm under his shirt, and the phantom's mask is ripped off in the end that reveals his face. His face isn't gruesome, it's just lumpy, red, and pretty intense on younger viewers. I would recommend this movie for viewers ages 12+, or maybe 10+ if your not intimidated by intense images.

A bit dissapointing . . .
I am a HUGE fan of The Phantom of the Opera and was absolutely ecstatic when I found out that there was going to be a movie version of the musical. So I bought the DVD and watched it. There were AMAZING costumes and sets. The things I did not like were the choice of actors and ommitted/altered scenes. Emmy Rossum's voice, in my oppinion does not fit the part of Christine at all. I'd much prefer the original Sarah Brightman (who was probably busy with her Harem World Tour). The movie also took out the Carlotta vs. Christine verbal fight and changed the crashing of the chandelier, which I did not quite understand why. Gerard Butler was good though. He brought the Phantom in a more rocky/poppy way, but was a lot less magical than in the original stage production. Overall, it was okay but still is a movie you should watch.

a legendary masterpeice
i love musicals, and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber is the lord of musicals. the music he makes is legendary and the work he put into this one added to his fame. but enough about him, the movie itself is pretty well made, even when there are a few mistakes here or there. but the big problem is the sexual references. during the number 'Music of the Night', the phantom starts touching Christine in ways that is considered sexual. and during 'Past the Point of no Return', they keep on says phrases like 'bodies entwining' and 'becoming one' (there is a popular rumor going around that during that one scene the actor who played the phantom got visibly aroused, just look for any signs of that towards the crescendo of the song). and there is one make out scene at the end between Christine and the phantom. the violence in it shouldn't be too much of an issue. but you do see the phantom chasing a man and then strangling him with a noose right before his corpse drops down onto the stage. and there is a sword fighting scene where the phantom gets Raoul in the arm and is able to draw blood, but its just a little bit on his shirt. the alcohol content in it is very minimal. from just my memory, i only remember the use of alcoholic beverages was at the beginning when a dancer is seen taking just a small sip from a bottle, and during the masquerade scene were the stage hands are celebrating with getting drunk, but theres just a few seconds of that. so parents, if you don't mind your child seeing anything like this, they may be able to see it alone. but if they are young, you should see it with them for their sake.

The Phantom
I must admit, I rolled my eyes when I saw the movie case...some stupid masked dude fondling a stupid-looking girl. It looked terribly sappy, and to make matters worse: it was a musical. Oh well, I thought, I'll have fun making fun of it. Despite the fact that it started out rather dully. Until the disembodied voice started singing in Christine's dressing room. From there on, the music and the plot kept getting better and better. The Phantom is a man who you loathe and pity at the same time. He's a well-rounded, interesting character. The music is brilliant, it tells the story well and lingers with you for quite a while afterwards.

This movie's okay. I like the song's better than the movie itsself. When the phantom's mask is taken off, at 1st is hair is black, when its off, its blond. ?????????
