AWESOME
I have seen the stageplay in different cities and countries. The movie was a beautiful depiction and, though different in some aspects, gave more visual beauty to some surroundings and sound (horses hoofs on brick, and much more)

Opulent musical triumph will be too slow for younger teens
This musical is dark, and powerful. The scenery, the singing, and the choreography are dazzling and exciting. Parents should know that the Phantom's obsession with Christine is very predatorial, and some scenes are sexual, although non-explicitly. Younger kids may not notice this. There is one very violent and scary scene, but it is brief. Altogether, the film is haunting, and beautiful. Kids under 12 most likely won't understand it.

We loved it.
The music is beautiful. The staging is lush. The casting superb, especially Butler and Rossum.

The Phantom
I must admit, I rolled my eyes when I saw the movie case...some stupid masked dude fondling a stupid-looking girl. It looked terribly sappy, and to make matters worse: it was a musical. Oh well, I thought, I'll have fun making fun of it. Despite the fact that it started out rather dully. Until the disembodied voice started singing in Christine's dressing room. From there on, the music and the plot kept getting better and better. The Phantom is a man who you loathe and pity at the same time. He's a well-rounded, interesting character. The music is brilliant, it tells the story well and lingers with you for quite a while afterwards.
