Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (G, 2007)

common sense media says

Cinderella uses brains, not magic, to win prince.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this enjoyable re-imagination of the Cinderella story has our heroine using her own resources, not the Fairy Godmother's, to win the Prince's heart. The evil stepmother is as bad as ever, and in a few short scenes, is downright menacing. A scary carriage ride has Cinderella careening toward a ravine in mortal danger. The Prince gets ample screen time, and his athletic heroism may even make this story appeal to the boys in the family.

Positive messages: Positive story of Cinderella drawing on her own skills to make her dream come true, instead of letting the Fairy Godmother do all the heavy lifting. One character starts off devious, but gains the courage to do the right thing. Two other characters who don't reform end up getting magical punishment. There's a nice father-son relationship characterized by mutual trust, respect, and affection.
Violence & scariness: Mild by some animated film standards, but still a food fight between two characters; and a nasty cat catches its tail on fire, is turned into a toy, then miniaturized, and is eventually thrown into a pond.
Sexy stuff: A romantic kiss for the bride.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Cinderella is a Disney Princess, whose brand reaches far and wide. Expect to see
Princess branding on consumer merchandise, food products, etc. as well
as in books, websites, and other media.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about which version of Cinderella they like best. Do you like how Cinderella acts in this movie or the original? Why do you think stepsister Anastasia found the courage to do the right thing? Parents can talk about how they knew they'd fallen in love the first time -- can you really tell by touching a person's hand? They can also make up alternate version to other fairy tales.

What's the story?

What's the story?
In CINDERELLA III: A TWIST IN TIME, the evil stepmother (Susan Blakeslee) steals the Fairy Godmother's magic wand and reverses time to the moment when the Grand Duke arrives with the glass slipper. She then uses the wand to make the slipper fit her unappealing daughter Anastasia (Tress MacNeille), put a spell on the Prince (Christopher Daniel Barnes) so he forgets Cinderella (voiced by Jennifer Hale), and organize a royal wedding. Meanwhile, Cinderella realizes she's on her own to win the heart of the Prince. With the help of her old friends Gus (Corey Burton) and Jaq, Cinderella finds heretofore unknown reserves of bravery, cunning, and determination to make her love connection.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

This funny, likable twist on the original Cinderella imagines what would happen if the magical slipper hadn't fit Cinderella, and creates a heroine far easier to root for in the process. Cinderella III moves along at a fast pace and has some genuinely funny bits.

The movie presents a more well-rounded Prince who exhibits unflagging graciousness to the clumsy Anastasia and true affection for his father. But the best thing about this version is Cinderella's perseverance in getting the Prince to fall in love with the real Cinderella. Girls 4 to 9 will probably be captivated by this story, as well as the DVD's special features that include a dancing game and music video.

it's ok but overdone.
I don't normally like princess movies, but I actually liked this one more than Cinderella 1 and 2. It had a pretty cool plotline and it had a good role model. Overall pretty good but a little overdone.

almost better than Cinderella
My 3 year old loved this movie - even moreso than Cinderella. There is no fastforwarding through chapters (ala the death of Cinderella's mom in the orignal). The movie is all good fun and even redeems a stepsister. Mom and kid approved.

I (reluctantly) love it
As much as I hate to admit it, I love this movie. Cindy has to FIGHT for her happy ending this time around, because the magic is working against her. One of the villains turns out to not be so bad. I love the now-kind-of-infamous Carriage Scene. MAJOR nightmare fuel. The Prince has become a deadpan snarker in this movie. Clearly he's been taking some lessons from Prince Eric and Spiderman. (The three ARE voiced by the same guy...)

so cute!
i love disney fairy tales. they are so cute and so timeless and i find- laugh if you want- that they have the prettiest songs. this cinderella didn't just become princess because she could dance, she worked for it. and it happened not because of magic, but in spite of it.

Better lesson than the first!
I like Cinderella princess better than the first--she's much more active in her destiny, and she makes things happen. Great job, Disney.
