Surreal masterpiece is appropriate for kids but wouldn’t be liked by said kids
Vaguely scary but definitely creepy. It’s probably appropriate for like 11-12 year olds but I don’t think they’d enjoy it. Some violence and one shot of breasts in the background, dogs hump. There isn’t much blood but some of the deaths can be a bit brutal conceptually, a man watches himself get strangled to death on a camera and a grown man chokes a little girl but it’s all shot to not be graphic. The entirety of the film is extremely surreal and the plot isn’t even understandable till about the half hour mark. The characters are great and the plot is serviceable if not slightly cliche. It’s very weird and fantastical which I find refreshing but may turn others away. If you like Pan’s Labyrinth or anything Tim Burton you’ll probably find this enjoyable. On top of all that it’s a beautiful movie, well shot and the sets are amazing.

Don't bother
It's like a prolonged nightmare that makes your head spin.
Not for kids. Dunno what the target audience would be :/

A fifteen year old's view from it.
I say that this is an appropriate movie for approximately the age of thirteen and up, though I myself watched this as a fifteen year old. It's beautifully done, with a hauntingly memorable and entrancing story line and soundtrack, especially L'exécution, with it's almost merry-go-round reminiscent style.
The main visual, background and costume aspects are Steampunk, a style which many would know of from such famous writers as H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, with mechanical apparatuses being common use.
It definitely is not a film for the majority of younger children (mainly under 12s), seeing as the storyline does have the possibility of being hard to follow for younger kids, not to mention that there is a fair bit of bad language, and there are many nightmarish themes which may frighten them. But for more mature children and thirteens and up I do recommend this film- it may not have been a blockbuster, but the storyline is heart-wrenching, the characters are believable and the ending is gorgeous but creepy. Well worth it.
