Great movie! I hate people who keep saying it's too scary/innapropriate, because DUH. If you show a 8 year old (or under) this movie, which is intended to be creepy, they will obviously get creeped out. Jeez, people are ignorant now-a-days.
Anyways, good movie. Great animation, original story. Very imaginative!
I feel stupid right now, reading other reviews. At first, I got scared, then, after seeing the woman's face, I went from peepy to screepy. I was terrified, but I suddenly got used to mama spider. I chickened out in the beginnning, and wrote a review in the middle of the movie. I erased the whole thing except the first sentence. Then, I finished watching the whole movie, and felt glad that it finished. I used my copy book here to shield my eyes just in case something scary happened. My brother showed up, eight going nine, and shooed him away, not wanting him to go through the movie. I watched the movie because of Dakota Fanning! Or you can say that...I saw it on Box Office long time ago, and told myself I would watch it, but that is until I saw that Dakota Fanning voiced the main character. I went from happy to excited to gloomy to scared to terrified to relieved. Funny how much this movie puts on me.
I'm an 11 year old girl and I think that this movie is " iffy" for kids 11 and 10, "on" for 12+, and "off" for kids 9 and under. One scene that was partially disturbing was the one scene close to the end where Coroline is in the "other world" and she goes and watches a performance by the two elderly women. At the beginning of the show, after the first elderly woman does her first song, the elderly woman, Maurice, pops up (after a slide of the dogs running the opposite way on a giant rodent wheel) wearing a small thong ( which shows her buttocks briefly) and two small seashells covering only her nipples. Both outfits are very...,well,...revealing. The rest of that section and the torso are bare. Another reason this is disturbing is that some womens breasts are exagerated, sometimes greatly and sometimes minimumly, in size. There are one, maybe two uses of the word cr*p.
I also rate this "iffy", "off", and "on", is because of the creepyness portion of the movie. One disturbing feature is the button eyes.CREEPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also do not like How the " Other Mother" eats bugs, and is basically a spider herself. It is kind of scary when the "Other Father" says, "So sharp you won't feel a thing" when they are talking about the ' putting buttons over the eyes buisness. My sister and I were kinda scared and I couldn't go to sleep. I had to sleep in my moms room!
Remember!!! It all counts on the kid. Not really a grown-up movie at all.
A wonderful movie, with stunning visuals. I enjoy this animation over that in Avatar. You can really tell this movie was made with love by just how much work was put into it. And, of course, the story's wonderful. I was a little disappointed that some of the monsters were more watered down versions of the ones in the book, but the movie didn't change much else. Wybie (I think that's how his name is spelled) was an additional movie-only character, but he fit in perfectly. Unless you have a very nervous, easily scared/upset child, it's definitely a must see. It may be something you want to rent and watch yourself before showing your kids, though, as there are some very scary parts. Even for kids though it's good to be scared now and then, just not to badly. It makes them stronger for the things to come in life. And Coraline herself is an unusual, spunky heroine, breaking gender placement.
This movie gives me the creeps! Even the book. I have had many nightmares of this movie like once, I had this dream when I failed a basketball game and my punishment for loosing was to go to the button world to see Beldam, Even Beldam is a creepy name. And She roared at me and put button eyes on me and I became her minion to stop coraline from escaping the button world but then a chihwowa came to save me by ripping the button eyes off my face before I became blind but then he got them off, attacked Beldam who is also named The Other Mother while I went to the hospital to have the doctors fix my brain and the rash I got on my eyes after ripping the button eyes! But it was a great movie!
This was a very scary movie for me, but it still didn't give me nightmares. It had some graphic moments and it just wouldn't stop with the action but I found this to be a problem. Coraline beat her other mother about 5 times and she just wouldn't give up. But towards the end of the movie, I found this to be very graphic and scary. Watch with someone in the day.
I love this movie it's funny and it is violent at the end the (other mother) turns into this huge spider thing that might scare younger viewers. There is mild language the worse it gets is jerkwad.
This should not be a PG movie straight up. There are naked ladies dancing, there are cats that eat mice with blood gushing out of their mouthes and this movie overall is creepy as heck. This should be PG-13 all the way. The sad part is is that no one above 13 would want to see this.
I'm not a huge fan of Tim Burton's movies; i.e Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, but Coraline was a little better than his other films. I do like the message that sometimes, your imperfect life maybe more perfect than you think, however, I thought this movie was scary in a very eerie, dark, and gross way. Not a jump-out-of-your seat nightmare scary, but just very dark. I think if I were 9 years old or younger, I would have had nightmares about many of the scenes in Coraline. The man villain, the "Other Mother" turns out to be a skeletal-spider like-creature, and the buttons for eyes is a creepiness all by itself. There are other frightening scenes that may scare little ones, but any older pre-teen may be able to handle it. The one particular scene that really appalled me was the two women trapeze artists. One character (Mariam I think) had overly-exaggerated but gigantic breasts, and were at one point had two little starfishes barely covering them, leaving the rest very exposed. My mom had to cover my little sister's eyes at that point, and even I found myself a little embarrassed to even look. This is an okay movie, but to be honest, my parents had a hard time figuring out what the moral to the story was. I had to look it up for them. If you like Tim Burton's works, then this movie will definately be for you. If not, it's not really worth your time. You won't be missing much.
this movie was great! The story line was awsome and so was 3d! But it was fairly creepy with dead bugs, evil people with button eyes, and some peril and suspense. Now to some older kids Coraline might not seem scary at all but to younger kids it might. It really depends on how much your kid is afraid of scary movies. If there wicked afaid then they could be afraid of this movie even when there 12! but if your childs not afraid chances are they are just going to find the movie creepy but not scary. I would recomend this to kids ages 10 and up.
Coraline is visually amazing, but it is bloated and way too scary for young kids
Coraline was nominated for best animated film of the year for the oscars. It didn't win, but the nomination will get many families on board to watch the DVD. But this is a spooky and confusing the-grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side animated film, and it is best to leave the young ones at home. It's visually fantastic and has a couple of likable characters, but there really isn't anything special here.
there is a part where the main person goes to a show-like thing where there are all these dogs and her buddy (whitey or whatever) and a elderly woman has sparkly sticker on her nipples! and thats it (u can see her boobs just not the nipples). OTHER THEN THAT ITS OK! U COULD JUST SKIP IT! but its not as bad as it sounds, its kinda funny! and its shown far away. other then that it is a wonderful movie, my little brother and 5 sisters loved it!
This is good and kids 10 and under will find it atleast somewhat scary. The story is good and the movie fantastic!! There is lots of peril and scary images and situations plus some mild languge. But overall age apropreat for older kids.
Coraline was GREAT, if disturbing. I'd say it's fantastic for middle school aged kids and more grown-up kids around 8 or 9. When the Other Mother turned into the deteriorating, spider-like 'Beldam' (which actually means evil creature who enjoys child abuse) , cover the youngsters' eyes! There is also another inappropriate scene where there are two old women are practically bare-naked, one with particularly large breasts just barely covered with seashells and fake hair.
Overall, great movie for older kids!
Before I start my review or the movie, I would like to clear something up. People have said that there is a flat out naked woman in Coraline. I can confidently say that this is not true. In an acrobatic act there is an elderly woman who dresses as a mermaid with a full fish bottom and a shirt that ends at her stomach. Here's the part people seem to have a problem with. As the first woman's partner in the act, there is another elderly woman portraying the popular painting of the naked Aphrodite with long flowing hair. The woman in the act has very large breasts and is wearing nothing on her chest except blue sequin pasties. On her lower half she is wearing a thong like bottom covered by her immense fat. These women turn out to be wearing fat "suits". Two much younger women in much more clothing jump out of their bodies (the bodies are very clearly suits). I must remind you that this scene is meant to be funny and not seductive seeing as the audience is a young man and woman and a large crowd of dogs. Coraline may start out a little dry but after the first 30-45 minutes the movie becomes exciting and entertaining. Your child may be frightened by some parts like the fact that (this is not completely explained) to belong to the what looks like perfect world, they have to gouge her eyes out and sew buttons onto her face. She also sews a boy's mouth up into a smile when he is sad (It is not nearly as gruesome as it sounds) also in the end the "other mother" turns into a crackly, mechanical-like, spider woman and chases Coraline through a literal web. Coraline is a spectacular, creative movie made for brave and adventurous children or older children.
This is a TIM BURTON movie people! If you have seen any of his other films, you will know his creepy style. I saw this when it came out... It didn't scare me, but one kid in the theater said "Mommy. this movie is scary!" My dad and I thought he was going to burst into tears, so be careful who you let see it!
