This is pure sci-fi, which means there are a lot of unanswered questions and adult twists and turns with grey choices. And for kids, that may be difficult to process.
Without question, this is a VERY gory and violet film. VERY! As an adult, that was difficult for me. The language is mostly the F word a lot. The sexual mentions are filthy but not what I would consider to be graphic.
The film is very adult oriented.
If you don't like shaky camera-type work in films that are shot to look more documentary style, you won't like this film.
Are there positive messages? Not really. You have to look deep. It's more of a reflection film that makes you think, through the metaphors presented in the story, what kind of people we are and how we treat others. Are we guilty of doing the same things to real humans that we see being done to aliens in this film? How do we treat others around us? Are we so selfish, greed oriented, and domineering that we are willing to disregard humanity and humane treatment of others to just fulfill our own interests? Our society is increasingly this way, and we're not just talking about apartheid.
Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable being in the theater with anyone under 21 for this film -- it's that strong.
However, kudos to Peter Jackson. It is a truly original, amazing piece of sci-fi art. Like the critics say, this film has enough twists and turns in it to keep you interested until the closing credits. Very few films, especially sci-fi action films can do that these days.
This movie has more than just violence. Violence is targeted towards both humans and aliens. The humans are zapped with laser weapons which the aliens have brought to earth; it shows humans graphically blowing up with blood and guts flying everywhere. The aliens look kind of like animals (alas, they crave cat food) and act submissive. They're initially shown to be half starved when their space ship is opened up and appear to want to leave earth. Humans mercilessly beat them and kill them -- again graphically shown which may lead some younger viewers to think its ok to treat animals that way. There is a brief reference to prostitution (with aliens); also a news report in which a government agent is rumored to have contracted a disease from having sex with the aliens (again, aliens shown as animals these references have bestiality undertones). African gangsters trading weapons are not necessarily shown in a positive light but are shown in an aura of power and as they are the ones who pull the strings and have the power. The alien/Sci-fi nature of this movie may lure teens/parents with teens to see this but they should know in advance what they're getting in to.
This is a classic SciFi film. It has a good message overall but it's an adult film all the way. It goes beyond people getting shot as it shows people exploding and being ripped apart. Not for the squeamish.
Important message; Far too violent and gory for kids
I wish I could take my kids to see a film that is such a powerful commentary on racism and prejudice, however District 9 is far too violent and gory for anyone under 15. I highly recommend it to adults and older teens.
this was an outstanding film and was put together so well. definitely for a mature audience though. lots of gore and cursing which made me cringe a little. the story is really interesting and holds the viewers attention. the problems in the movie reflect the real world and the violence (while excluding alien & alien technology) real people face everyday and the struggles of some people in this world. it made me think of just how good we have it in America and thankful i dont have to live like that. it will remind you of the hate and violence people participate in all over the world. they did a good job snatching me in from the beginning and i felt real compassion and hate for the characters. excellent :)
This was an amazing movie, first off. Everything, story, effects, characters, were perfect. However, this movie includes a ton of violence, blood, sexual references, etc. In one part of the movie, the staff finds a house full of alien egg sacs and performs what they call an "abortion" by burning down the shack. Body parts are blown off and sometimes innocent "prawns" are killed by humans for the sake of science. This is a beautiful movie for matured teens and adults, but it's definitely not for children or the faint of heart.
Great movie and very smart storyline. It will spark discussion and make people think. Plus, great special effects. All that said, it's full of gore and disgusting images. Not for the weak stomach.
Infectious in a good way, but could be toxic for kids!
This is an awesome film, for mature teens and adults. It is extremely violent, tense, and disturbing almost entirely throughout. The messages are ultimately positive if you have the right context to think about the social and moral themes. It's rated 14A here in Canada, but I would not want a child under 16-ish to see it without a parent.
I have a little anecdote for you before my review.
One time when I was teaching, we were talking about apartheid, South Africa, and Nelson Mandela. I was trying to explain to them just how nasty apartheid was, and they weren't getting it. They were middle schoolers. Finally, knowing the ultra-violent tastes of one of my troublemakers and having just seen the film myself, I asked, "Has anyone seen District 9?" Half the boys' hands and a few girls shot up. The first thing I said was, "I can't believe your parents let you watch that. It was too much for me; I couldn't even look at the screen half the time. But, I know you guys, I know you seek this stuff out." I went on to explain that the whole movie was designed to comment on apartheid, and how, and suddenly even the kids who hadn't seen the movie got it.
This movie is horrifically violent and shouldn't be shown to kids who have a tendency to mimic violence or become desensitized. It will probably give those who don't fit the above nightmares. Honestly, they're nightmares kids should be having. The only way to keep atrocities like this from happening is to keep talking about them until the underlying racism and fear that caused them is gone.
District 9 has an important message about the value of all life and how carefully we have to guard ourselves against looking at others as less than us. I wish it could send that message without gore and the constant swearing (and without seeing myself in the cheerfully judgemental Wickus), but it wouldn't really cut through the layers of desensitization and apathy in our culture without both the fantasy setting and the overstimulating violence and swearing.
This film has educational merit, but it's extreme enough that you should decide when your kids are ready for it. Unless they're extremely able to respond to violence in a mature way for their age, they probably won't be ready before high school.
My students in middle school probably weren't ready for that movie, but their parents allowed them to see it. The best I could do is try to help them find the abundant good buried under the mountains of gore and horror in this beautiful, terrible film.
I think district 9 is a fantastic movie I dont get the adults with the violence. The violence isn't that bad. I definetly think your twelve year old son can watch.
Excellent sci-fi thriller is one of the best films that I've ever seen!
I absolutely love this movie! it's one of the best that I have ever seen! The acting was surprisingly phenomonal (especially by newcomer Sharlto Copley), the action was unique and exciting (and also very bloody), and the story was, believe or not, original and thrilling! The effects were also top-notch and the pace felt just right. Parents: This is a very bloody movie with lots of gory sci-fi mayhem. There's also nonstop strong language and some aberrant sexual references. Bottom Line: An absolutely fantastic film that deserves just as much praise as any other of your favorites! Thanks for reading! - Movie Man
Absolutely Brilliant; An Original, Fantastic Sci-Fi Film!
This may be the best film of 2009 and one of the best films of the deacde. It's totally original with excellent story, characters, suspense, and action. For sci-fi fans, this is a must-see. For documentary fans, this is also a must see (but for those of you who don't like documentaries, do not fear! Only the first half-hour or so is almost full documentary, and it soon becomes a full-fledged film wiht only very few documentary pieces). For movie fans, this is a must-see. Get it yet? This is a MUST-SEE! It's brillinat, and, for action fans, there's plenty of cool, sci-fi action to please them! Parents: Although this is a great film, it is very gory and actually quite gross and disturbing. Torture, experimentation, and *SPOILERS* a man becoming an alien slowly over the course of the film (very gross and protracted) *SPOILERS ENDED* I highly, HIGHLY recommend this Oscar-worthy sci-fi film.
**** Transformers. And all other action films except this one and a few others.
Far from perfect, but this is still one of the best action films ever. This is one of those action films where you actually need a brain to understand it, not like that bullcrap transformers or Mission Impossible, where it looks like some child wrote the stupid, mindless script. This movie has actual depth, not just a few boring action seqences held up by a meaningless, mindless script.
District 9 was an extremely interesting film. Peter Jackson really must have done some thinking about this one. The movie itself lacked in excitement. I was most definitely not on the edge of my seat, however the plot wasn't awful whatsoever. I would consider this to be your not-so-average, yet good action film. I must say that there is much gore and violence. There was way too much bad language. Many words such as: F**k, G*d*mn and Sh** are thrown around as if they were words in everyday vocabulary. The language is quite awful, I must confess. Racism (in the form of humans putting down aliens) is actually a topic which seems to be covered. The only highlight about the film is that it teaches to look past other's differences, and to help each other despite what color or race of person. All in all, the movie wasn't awful; however, it will not be one that I will watch again anytime soon.
How exciting this movie looks it is actually kind of boring and not that scary. Me and my son watched it and it was extremely violent and a lot of profanity. Not for anyone under 16.
I had heard that this movie sucked. I blew it off and didn't watch it until a few weeks ago. I had purposely avoided knowing any specifics about it so I would be surprised by it. And I WAS. It was a very refreshing movie after seeing all the unimaginative drivel coming from Hollywood recently. This movie was enthralling, thought-provoking, and visceral. There was a lot of foul language and tons of violence, but it was not excessive or extraneous, as it made sense being where it was. Not like some movies where they curse because they can or the violence is grotesque just for shock value. This was a dark and gripping tale of ostracism and survival. The weird sexual references felt a bit out of place but there wasn't much of that. This was by far the best movie I have seen this year, and I bought it today on Blu-ray. My wife won't watch it with me because she would find it offensive, but we generally avoid R rated movies so that makes sense.
I enjoyed this movie very much, but felt like the language was pretty extreme. Also, the violence is a bit over the top, really really gory stuff. For mature teens only.
