Perfect for 9- or 10-year-olds and up
Although there is some language "P--is breath", dammit, s--t, son of a b--ch, the movie is a classic. It really captures the perspective and feelings of a 10-year-old boy. This an awesome, emotionally and imaginatively engaging movie. The "p--is breath" went right past my son as he said he didn't quite catch what they said. Thank goodness! The drunkeness went past him too.

Be Prepared To Cry Your Eyes Out!
This is a wonderful family classic. E.T. gets drunk in one scene, but the only thing I would worry about content-wise is language. Although it is not used often, some of the words are borderline PG-13. Regardless, this is still a touching movie about the power of friendship.

A Fun Classic for All!
E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is a classic. It was an instant hit when it came out, and remains so today. Kids loved E.T. so much, they wrote letters" to "him", enough to be published in a book. The catch phrase "E.T. phone home" is instantly recognized everywhere. The story may sound absurd at first glance, but when you watch it, you are immedietly engrossed in a fun world of childhood immaturity, fun, and adventure when E.T., an alien, is stranded on Earth when is ship leaves without him. He befriends Elliot and his siblings, who try to get him home. Language is really the only thing to be concerned about here, outside of a tense scene where (SPOILER) E.T. is believed to be dead. "s**t", "a*s", "b*tch", and "d**n" are used many times, most of them by (gasp!) children. Young ones may be frightened by E.T.'s sickly appearance toward the end also. Great movie. Highly recommended.

Great movie, just not for anyone under at least 10
I love this movie, I really do. I was excited to show it to my son who's five and loves anything about aliens, monsters etc. So we watched it. I was SHOCKED at the language! I mean aside from the sh*t there was p#nis head, d*he bag etc. Thankfully he didn't catch it the first time around but he won't be watching this for quite a while. It's too bad too, it's a really cute movie aside from the language.

A must-see movie for boys
My boys (7&5) and I watched this movie last night. My 7-yr-old son got totally absorbed to the story (talking about empathy!) and he wept when he thought ET died. He is a very perceptive boy but I thought how strongly this movie appealed to him. We talked about friendship, putting others first, and empathy (and many more!) and had a great discussion after the movie. Great character teaching movie!

I might have enjoyed it if I was older
My parents showed me this movie when I was about 4-5 years old. It is one of my first life memories as well, just not in a good way! The ET character freaked me out, my parents kept trying to reassure me it was "friendly" but I wasn't buying it. Anyways, I was hiding behind a bunch of pillows on the couch the entire movie and I had nightmares about him for years after. I have never been able to force myself to watch it again, and probably never will. Even as an adult, the sight of it gives me the creeps. Maybe I was an overly sensitive 5 year old, but I would wait a few more years to show it to a child.

Good Family Movie
This is a very good movie that is entertaining, funny, and sad all in one.

A great movie with a few iffy scenes.
My mother-in-law let my 4 year old watch this movie (I confess I didn't object and could have) and I'm sorry she did. Although he absolutely loves it and wants to buy it to watch all the time, at night when he's trying to sleep he says he is "scared of ET." There are no shots fired, but cocked rifles are shown. Aside from the scariness factor, there are two sex-related scenes. One in which one of the adolescents points at Eliot's mother's butt and is admonished by Eliot's older brother to stop (this was lost on my son, at least), and a second where Eliot ogles and kisses a girl in his class. ET also drinks beer and gets drunk (along with Eliot) and my son wanted an explanation of that phenomenon. I think the movie is fine; I just wish we'd waited a few years for the experience.

Only OK
This movie is not bad but there are some very sad parts. There is a bad word when the teenager says the "S" word. My favourite part was when E.T. learned his name and got dressed up!

Enjoyable
It's OK but a little too violent and in the end it gets really scary because of how the house looks, but it was enjoyable.

Well, I didn't like it, it's too emotional for me, but okay for kids 5+. Not at all scary. Don't watch this with your mother, she will start crying.

a classic!
Great, classic movie, had some language but it didn't go on extensively. It's frightening for little kids to see ET get "electrocuted" in the hospital to start his heart again. In the beggining ET gets chased, this can also be frightening for young kids. My 4-year old sister saw this and she really enjoyed it, she was fine. But it may have been a little inapropriate. It's set place after a divorce, there's a scene where kids and teens get chased after by adults (they have guns in the original but in the 2002 version they've been digitally replaced with walkie-talkies) ET and a boy called Elliott get a long well, it might teach kids to get along with others who are different. good movie, I'd recommend it for 6-8 years at the minimum.

I love this movie!
E.T. is a great movie! I watched it when I was 4 or 5 and I was not scared. Speaking, some kids under 5 that are scared of lots of stuff, they may be scared of this movie. Anyway, It is a charming movie.
