Fred Claus is the first Santa comedy to come out since 2003's Elf. But instead of focusing on Santa's merry little workers, this slapstick-laden film is about Santa's brother, Fred. Fred is a down-on-his-luck grump who is definetly not ready to sing a Christmas carol. He's basically a 21st century Scrooge. Ironic that his sibling brother is Santa Claus, who reluctantly invites Fred to spend the holiday at the North Pole. Clearly, this is a silly children's movie. But it isn't awful. Fred Claus may have a nonsensical storyline, but some scenes are really funny. Vince Vaughn is perfect as the title character, and Paul Giamatti does an excellent job as Santa. Also, there are notable performances from Kevin Spacey and Rachel Weisz. This all-star cast will make this movie easier for parents to stomach. Overall, Fred Claus is an unoriginal and forgettable kiddie comedy with a few hilarious scenes and lots of good performances. While not a great film, it will definetly appeal to the kids and might win over a few adults as well. Content issues: Basically none, but there are some fart jokes, and a use of "crap". But nothing else to worry about.
