I really love this movie! Very epic battle scenes! Russell Crowe does a perfect job in this role. There are some sexual references concerning incest and rape. However it should be OK for mature teens.
One of the best movies I've seen. The acting and storyline are both great. There's a little bit of violence, but nothing that is really disturbing (besides the kid getting run over by horses)
Great but grisly movie. Iffy for ages 16-18. Rated R for intense, graphic combat.
This was a great movie, but it was very, very disturbing. The blood and violence didn't bother me very much - it was more of the theme of killing people for sport and the crowd egging on murder that disturbed me. The parts that disturbed me the most were when a man smothered his father to death and when the murders of a characters' wife and child are described. The woman was r***d, then crucified and burned, and the child was crucified and burned (this is NOT shown, but it is talked about and in one scene you see just the feet of their burnt bodies hanging from the crosses). The most graphic reference to this is "They tell me the child squealed like a girl when they nailed him to the cross", and "Your wife moaned (or wailed, I forget which word they used) like a w**** when they r***ged her again, and again, and again". Language includes one use each of the words: h***, $***h***, b!***, w****. A brother tries to get his sister to kiss him and have --- with him, and sometimes appears to ---ually abuse her, but there is no actual kissing or @#$ shown between the brother and sister. Overall, this is a very adult, violent, graphic, and disturbing movie, and is definitely not for kids. Off for ages 15 and under, iffy for ages 16-18, on for ages 18+.
Gladiator is a unique movie, but a somewhat predictable storyline. It's still a great movie, but you can anticipate the ending from the beginning. There is only one reason this is R...violence. There are bloody moments, some blood spurting, and slow motion violence. But, not enough to give the movie an R rating. I've seen worse PG-13 movies. Also (I don't know whether this will help you) Gladiator won Best Picture of 2000.
This movie is utterly amazing. Russell Crowe is simply magnificent! The way how this movie is portrayed is quite impressive and realistic. The main concerns are: (i) the violent action scenes, especially when the woman and the child are brutally tortured and when Commodus murders his own father for the throne and (ii) references to incest. The violence is the main reason why I rate this movie for 15 of age and above. Can't wait to watch Robin Hood of the same director!
This is my all-time favorite movie. The cinematography, acting, and action sequences are superb. Not to mention the amazing storyline of epic proportions.
However, this movie is clearly not for children, and maybe too intense for a gore-loving teenager. I guess it all depends on the maturity level of said teen watching the film. If he is the type that shouts "LOOK AT ALL THAT BLOOD! WOW! DID YOU SEE THAT GUY'S HEAD FLY OFF!?" would it be a good thing to fuel his bloodlust? Know your kid and use your good judgment for this rollercoaster of a movie.
The only thing with this is violence. Not really blood, just violence. The fight scenes in the movie are relatively sparse, and when someone dies the camera cuts away. There are like three swear words throughout the whole thing. The only sexual part is when the emperor tells Maximus that his wife "moaned like a whore." Overall, a terrific movie and good for twelve and up.
Amazing movie. It seems Russell Crowe was BORN for this movie! Very good, and don't let the R rating make you think it's too violent for teens or kids. It's too violent to be a PG-13, but also, not exactly THAT violent to get a R rating. I watched it last night, and there are only 4-5 scenes of violence. Scenes in the Gladiator Arena are pretty graphic, with lots of blood, but the camera does NOT linger! You see blood for a split second, and then the camera changes views. It's very good and inspiring, and there's no language or sexual content. It's perfect for teens and adults!
This has got to be one of the best movies of all time. Great acting storyline and script. You are not living the life if you havent seen this movie. It gets me though, it should definatly not be rated R. I understand that it has tons on violence, but it is not graphic enough to be an R rated film. Blood is seen in occasional gladiator battles, but nothing that will gross you out. Also very depressing in many ways, but still a must see.
It is amazing!!!! I didn't even know what it was about till i watched it. It is most definitely a movie worth watching!!
*Violence- decapitations, slashing someones body in half, people being hanged, blood, and a woman and her child being burned and put on a cross then your good! But in the beginning they have a mans body with no head ride into the camp on a horse and then you see a barbarian holding up the guys head. then he throws it on the ground and you see a close- up of it rolling in the dirt. Later on there is another decapitation that they show the actual guy cutting of his head. Another part a mans body gets sliced in half at the waist. And of course someones wife and child get burned and hung on a cross, which later they say that his boy screamed like a girl when he was nailed to the cross. And last but not least someone is hanged and shot with arrows. And tons of other things that i can't think of that are very violent!
*Sex- Commodus loves his sister and asks her to stay with him during the night, also later on he tries again to get her to have sex
But please don't let the R rating turn you off. I am a girl and i loved this movie!! So if you are mature enough for all that stuff and more than maybe you should give it a go! Oh and Maximus gets a cut and you see the cut later and it has maggots in it... so you are warned! but if you can't watch it know you need to watch it in some part of your life!
i didnt really watch it but it is truly amazing but still ith as VERY graphic violence like if they declare war they cut the head off and it had one part where the hero cuts the guy's head off and they were showing bit by bit and in the first aid place one guy had his arm off nad they showed it and another guy got his fingers chopped of and one guy who is the kings son killed his father in a disturbing manner and he was speaking to his sister and saying for her to kiss him
People who complain about sex in THIS movie are dumb, and that's because there is none. Besides the references, in DIALOGUE, that the Emperor has the hots for his sister, but it's not a bad thing, it was actually a common thing back then to marry in your family to keep the bloodline of royalty pure. They didn't know about the health issues. And the positive role models and message is, in a world full of depravity, this one man, Maximus defies an Emperor who killed his family. Don't get me wrong, revenge is bad, but if someone killed my family, I'd go crazy on the people that did it. It's a story of honor, because he has such high morales. This is probably the best gladiator movie since Spartacus.
