I decided to finally let my almost 8yr old watch it with me, but we talked about everything the whole way through. I definitely won't let my 2, 4, & 6yr olds watch it until they're older, but I love this movie and think it's a great and fun movie for 7 or 8 and up. It can get a bit scary, though.

This is rated PG, my 4 and 6 year old have watched Harry Potter with us, also PG, which they loved (just closed their eyes for the scary parts) but we weren't prepared for the language, dead body and kissing scenes in this movie. The kids hated it, it was too scary and inappropriate for their age! I will check this site before letting them watch another PG flick!!!

Not a problem for kids in Middle School
By the time kids hit Middle School, they've heard far worse language from their peers, in music, etc., than they'll hear in this movie, and they're mature enough to know what is and is not appropriate for them to use in school or at home. They certainly enjoy the movie, but I do think that a good deal of the "sh**" stuff was not necessary. I do agree that, if this movie were released today, it would probably be PG-13.

We loved this movie! It made us laugh for days. We definitely agree that it is not for younger viewers, though.

Good for tweens
Movie was great for my 8 1/2 year old, but my 6 year old son was scared of the gun fire and the "monster" downstairs.

Would Probably Be Rated PG-13 Today
The action and adventure of this movie is entertaining (kids on a hunt for lost treasure -- shades of Indiana Jones for the younger set) but I was a little dismayed by the persistent use of foul language and some of the sexual undertones of the older characters. A young boy (mistakenly) kisses his older brothers girlfriend and there is a scene where the band of boys try frantically to reglue a broken phallus onto a statue. The older female character wears a short tennis skirt throughout the movie and there are climbing scenes where you can see her underwear. There were a few moments where I felt a little uncomfortable with my 9-year-old son watching but we discussed the movie afterward and acknowledged that the language was not appropriate for him to use. I found the movie more appropriate for my 12-year-old son although I still found the language unneccesary and over-the-top for a childrens movie.

I rented this movie based on my own memory from when it came out so many years ago. I took it out for my son's 11th birthday sleepover. The beginning of the movie starts with references to marijuana and uses of the "S" word. Not what I expected and I was surprised. We stopped the movie and put in another movie that we already had at home.

Kids were glued to the TV
Was a great movie for my eight year olds. Loved it as a kid and now as an adult.

baby ruth!
An adventure film aimed at children, but the character "Sloth" may frighten small children, and the "S" word is used quite often. It's appropriateness would depend on how you feel about bad language.

The PG rating on Goonies is a typo!
We only watch G and PG movies. (Our kids are 7 and 9.) This movie should've been rated PG-13, for sexual-themed language and lots of 4-letter words. And that was only in the first 15 minutes! We turned it off after that. We tried to ignore it that long because the movie was a gift from a friend who was watching it with us. She had bought it for the kids in good faith that the rating could be trusted, but she exchanged looks with us and we mutually agreed it was definitely NOT appropriate for children our kids' ages. And I'm not sure such gratuitous language is ever appropriate -- why do filmmakers think 4-letter words belong in films targeted to kids? They must live in a different world than that of most Americans.

Great Pirate Fun
I loved this movie as a kid, and I still love it as an adult. There is a lot of colorful language in this movie---which I never noticed until watching with my son. So, if anything is going to be a bother to some parents, it will be that. Still, it is a lot of fun--just make sure your kids know not to repeat what they hear!

Way to many cuss words and vulgar language, even for Dad.
I am watching one of my favorite childhood films with my 8 year old boy. They have said Sh*t, Omg,what-the-hell, balls,p*ss, *ss, shut-up,and damn. This was 20 minutes in. Not appropriate for elementary age kids.

One of my favorites
Loved this movie at a kid (10 or 11? I think). Watching it now w/ my 9 year old, I seriously wish I would have watched it again before allowing him to view it. Should be rated PG-13. Several references to sex, drugs, and crude language. Not so bad that it should be rated R, but be cautioned about younger kids.

A great movie
This is great for older kids. The only promlem is its overuse of the S word.

Good old fashion movie but it is a little lame
They use the word "Hell" in this movie alot. as in, "what the hell?" or as in, "lets get the hell outa here!" And it makes it even worse when the kids in the movie say it and they don't get punished for it. It would make little kids think it is okay to say them words except if they had a strict talk with their parents about that. And there is alittle bit of kissing. There is also bad behavior in this movie. Such as kids making a mess and a fat kid taking off his shirt and "wiggling" his belly. I would only let kids AT LEAST 10 years old watch this movie. and after the movie is over you may want to talk to your kids about a couple of things

Only an O.K movie....
I saw this because my dad made me, I was not very entertained by it, 1.ther is a weidr part where the kids try to put the " weak point" back on a broken naked statue of a boy. 2. not alot of violenc, some slapstic falling, guns are pointed at kids, and lots of grusom skelots along the way. 3. the big isuie is the language, s--t,p--s,d--n and more are used by kids! well this movie isn't the bes but if you like movies with creepy caves, and lame humor you might think it's good....kind of.

good but, not good at the same time
what all the adults say about the s-word is true. In a PG-13 or R movie I would of expected it and not mineded it as much, but it's kind of disturbing on a PG. A pretty lot of sex to. it is hularious tho. on for 13+ otherwise make em' wait.(it shoud of been PG-13. you've also got to realize that there was a time in the 80's were the s-word was ok in kids movies.)
