A Stellar Thriller With a Thoughtful Side...
I AM LEGEND could have been a bad movie. The people making it could have messed up in many ways. However, they turn the flaws of the story into advantages. Its biggest asset is Will Smith's powerhouse performance. The script is very well-written also. The people making this movie took a big risk. Instead of making it an all-out action thriller with mindless, constant violence, they took the story line and made it, primarily, a tragedy about one man left alone in the world (with some great action pieces on the side).
Parents need to know that this movie is very intense. Even when the action lets up, the emotion doesn't, and several scenes are emotionally draining, whether by fright or sadness. I don't like to include SPOILERS! in my reviews, but for the sake of a well-informed review, I will now. SPOILER! About 50 minutes into the movie, Neville's dog, Sam, becomes infected with the virus. He must strangle her before she becomes a zombie like the rest, and, since the dog is his only companion through the movie, this scene will be too overpowering for kids under 12 at least. END OF SPOILERS. In addition to that emotional scene, there are several others detailing the death of Neville's wife and daughter (helicopter crash). There's no more violence in the movie than there is in, say, a SPIDER-MAN film, but many scenes featuring the zombies will be frightening for kids. The film has a constant feel of desperation and despair, and while I wouldn't call it disturbing, it makes the film NOT for kids.

Throughout the movie I was having mixed feelings...
This movie was more of a thriller than an action. It is the kind of movie when you're always on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. The zombies aren't too scary and the violence was not too bad. Just a depressing story. It was really realistic in some ways because in some zombie movies the survivors are almost jumping off walls and having really, really good "luck" and "Strength". In this movie the living are not farfetched and fight like we do now. Overall a worth-seeing movie with a mixture of; Thriller, Action, Drama. Fine for 13 and up! 4/5

not what i was hoping for
This movie was ok but not as good as it could have been. I am tired of cgi that
doesn't fit. the monsters at first are scary but then degrade into fake looking computer graphics. The story is good and will smith is great. This movie could have been great but the studio or producers settled for o.k.

A Top Rated Will Smith movie
I thought this was a very good movie for Will Smith, if you are easily afriad of scary looking creatures, then I wouldn't recommend this movie for you. There are scary parts in this film, throughout in the movie, such as: things popping out, especially the scene where Will Smith finds himself in the dark. But its not a very scary movie.
The theme of this movie is Will Smith lives in New York, with his wife, daughter and dog. Then suddenly everyone starts getting cancer, So everyone is evacuating out, but some people are not allowed to leave because they are contaminated. Most of the time Will Smith is trying to figure out the cure for cancer, then at the end of the movie , he figures out the formula. There is other stuff that concludes to that at the end but i'm not going to say because it would ruin the movie for you.
But, the way this movie ended I think there should be a #2 movie.

Horrible, sad, and dark movie
This movie was such a let down for my family. We love Will Smith but this film was not one of his typical creature features. Cries of humans being in pain from a disease, animals dying and becoming viloent killers and MOTHERS BEWARE, my 12 year old and I hid under a sweatshirt whie Will Smith kills his own dog by suffocating it to death. Left us with an empty, sad, dark feeling. I don't like to pay $50 to feel that way.

omg will smiths performance in this movie is outstanding and the suspense holds you to the edge of your seat the mutants may scare younger children so be aware of that before you take them to this show but for kids 13 and older this movie is probably one of the best for this year i definatley would call it a must see this movie is awesome!!!!!!

Know What You're Getting Into
It's an amazing movie, very different, with an emphasis on Christian morals. However, if your kids don't like the dark, this won't help them one bit. A very sad movie; multiple intense moments.

It was a good movie.
I really like this movie. There was like one or two scary moments but they didn't last long. Will smith is a great actor and all of his movies are worth watching. NO KIDS THOUGH.

2 times too many
I followed the hype and went for the IMAX experience. It was OK. The zombie like creatures reminded me more of "The Mummy" and i kept thinking Brendon Fraser was going to pop out and start slaying the beasts. Another words, not believable, so the movie was crap. Its hard to believe you can come up with a cure for something that far gone as to when injected with this cure change back into normal. come on guys those creatures were disturbing and there was no hope in them turning human again. I am indeed a Will Smith fan, however there really was no reason to remake this film just for todays glorified special effects. waste of time, yet single tear goes out for the dog...

A worthwhile thriller that you will want to watch more than once
Since 28 Days/Weeks Later are my favorite movies of course I had to watch this one. At first, because the story lines are so similar, I though I would be dissapoitned, but I was happily surprised. Will Smith played the part very convincingly. Some parts were pretty scary, but not still-be-scared-the-next-day, kind of scary. The CGI was really good on the zombies/diseased people, so it wasn't hard to see past the fact that they were essentially man-eating zombies(which is a fairly funny concept). I heard a few people say that the ending was bad, but I felt it was fitting, bitter-sweet and action packed. But the addition of two survivors just in the nick of time was just a little TOO coincidental for me.
Overall it was a fun movie to have seen, thrilling, creepy and sweet all at the same time, making it really enjoyable.

not what i expected
I am a fan of Will Smith, and this film proved he can carry a feature film without help. Well planned, well acted, no sex, violence when necessary, language wasn't an issue. I would have liked to see a different ending, but some things simply must be. I look forward to the releade on DVD to add to my collection at home.

Need a new rating
This was overall a good movie. The suspense starts in the beginning and never stops. Walking out of the theatre my heart was still elevated, but I was still happy that I went to see it. There are a couple of moments where I almost jumped out of my seat. There is no blood when the mutants are shot, but when inside one of their hives there blood all over the walls which for some people could be rather gross. I wouldn't let anyone under twelve watch this movie, and even 13 year olds will find this very suspenseful. I personaly would have rated this R, because about 55% of the 13 year olds that watch this will be fine, but any 17 year old will be fine. If there was usch a rating, this would be rated PG-15

Mixed reviews in my house.
Well, my oldest two oldest children and I viewed this movie together and my oldest loved it. He thought the special effects were well done and was very interested in the plot. However my second oldest was pretty scared by the whole 'mutant-take-over.' She didn't like when the dog became rabid and had to be exterminated. Overall I didn't particularly enjoy the movie as much as ohter Will Smith movies, but I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
