My 4yr old girls liked it but didn't understand the story line. My 13 yr son liked it. We were able to talk about the Great Depression and how similar things are today. I wish more movies like this could be made. You don't need bad language, violence and sex to make a good movie!

Not great for sensitive kids...
Well I know that this was listed as ok for six year olds, but my daughter really didn't enjoy it. There's a lot of heavy, adult stuff in here, including: families being evicted from their homes due to foreclosure and fathers leaving their families to get jobs (and sometimes never coming back). There is a lot of heartache in this movie, and I kept waiting for the plucky little Kit and her friends to pick up the mood, and they did a little, but to my daughter, who started crying 25 minutes into the movie from the relentless stream of sadness, it came too little too late. It was educational, in that she learned about the Great Depression and the banking and financial system, but I'm actually kind of sorry that I exposed her to all of this at the tender age of 6. If your kids would bear up well under similar plot points, go ahead, but just a warning to parents of the more sensitive tykes....

Well done, enjoyed by all
I watched this movie with my two daughters, and we all enjoyed it from start to finish. It was a great way to learn about the Great Depression and the challenges of that time, and it also led into a lot of discussions about kindness, courage, and honesty. Very well done, and we will watch it again!

Great American girl movie
I watched this with my 10yr old daughter and we both enjoyed the movie. I thought it was age appropriate and had a great message. I find that most of the American Girl movies are right on track for what I want my daughter to watch.

Great Movie!!
My daughter who is 9, myself and my mother all saw this movie together and we loved loved loved it. Kids needs to know about things that happened in the past especially from a kids point of few. There were a few things we talked about together afterwards, I wanted to make sure she understood. GREAT GREAT movie. No Junk in it!!

Wonderful!
A must see for any girl! My girls brought their AG dolls with them for this movie. We loved every bit of it and bought it the day it came out on DVD!

Very cute movie
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this very cute movie. I would see it again, with or without my kid! The characters are a lot of fun, I even laughed out loud at some parts. There is absolutely nothing objectionable at all, and I'm rather picky where that is concerned. Highly recommended.

Excellent movie in today's economy
The storyline takes place during the depression. It's easily tranferable to today's economy and peer pressure. My 7 year old daughter hasn't stopped talking about and has her 11 year old brother convinced it's a must see movie. She took heart to County and all of Hobos and has talked about helping the homeless. She has also asked if we will need to sell eggs to pay for gas! You need to see the movie to understand!

1030's Tutorial Needed
Make sure you give your child a Great Depression tutorial before you go to this movie. I took my 7 year old, and she certainly did not understand the bank repossessing a house, a Dad leaving his family to find a job, a family taking in borders...etc. I was able to explain all this to her after the movie, but I think a little info on these things before the movie would have been helpful for her to understand what was going on in the movie.

A Classic Family Film
I took my four year old daughter to see this film, and we both loved it. We've been reading the book series for the last month or so, and she was so excited about the release of the film. Fortunately, it lived up to our expectations. So many family films these days tend to be filled with content that is wholly inappropriate for kids, but that certainly isn't the case with this film. Moreover, it stays fairly true to the ideas presented in the original texts - something both my daughter and I enjoyed. Kids who aren't familiar with the character or those who tend to need more action than story might find themselves a bit bored, but that certainly wasn't a problem for us. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to view the film together.

Younger kids will enjoy this movie. . .but not get it!
My 5 year-old enjoyed the movie, but didn't fully grasp the plotlines involving the "bad guys" framing an innocent person for burglary, and why Kit's family had to take in boarders (despite a conversation with me before the movie about what "the Depression" was). We really enjoyed the spunk and independence of Kit. Privately, I found the theme regarding the goodness and innocence of the hobos fairly heavy-handed, but I realize the movie was trying to make the point that people should be judged on who they are rather than what they have. Surprisingly, my 5 year-old was quite affected by Kit's father leaving the family to look for work in another state, despite a happy reunion at the end of the movie. She wanted to go see her dad at work right after the movie. . .! Young kids will not get many of the nuances of this movie that can likely be launching points for some meaty discussions with older kids about values in the face of adversity.

A really good movie for everyone
I really enjoyed this movie! I loved the depiction of the old times and the plot itself, though it's somewhat predictable. It's kind of like "Nancy Drew" meets "The Mole" since one person is causing all the destruction and the main character (Kit) solves all the problems. I won't spoil the movie, but you'll find this as a surprise when you watch the movie. The only thing parents need to be aware of is brief, very mild innuendo and some mild violence.

Wholesome and heartwarming
I often despair about the fare offered on TV and in theaters, but this movie was interesting enough to engage my 14 year old and enthrall my 10 year old. Hooray!

Great story of courage, conviction and perseverence
My 7 year old daughter is a big American Girl fan, so seeing this movie was a must. I was really pleased by the movie which chronicles a young girl whose family is struggling financially during the Depression. Kit is a great girl who displays conviction, perseverence, loyalty, and courage. We all enjoyed the movie, even my 7 year old son. It's truly a film that the entire family can enjoyed.

Wonderful movie for all ages
This movie was so wonderful. It gives us all a chance to see what life was like in the depression but in a non-scary way. This movie has given us a lot to discuss as a family and shows us all how grateful we should be for all we have. Very entertaining for all ages. My 7 year old daughter, myself and my 67 year old mother loved the movie.

My daughter was entranced
Although there were some suspenseful moments that made her cringe a little, my 8 year old and I found this movie to be endearing and highly enjoyable. She sat in the theatre with her Kit doll (they were both wearing their "Kit Movie" t-shirts) and couldn't take her eyes off the screen. Before entering the theatre I was afraid that I would fall asleep during the movie but was delightfully surprised by how the story and portrails enrapt me. Brava, Kit Kitridge! (Now if they would only make the American Girls more affordable!)

Loved it!
I loved this movie. It was a great mother daughter movie although I wish I would have sent her with her father since the movie deals with the father daughter bond more then with the mother and daughter. It did have moments when my 7 yr old would ask what was going on. Primarily when the houses were in foreclosure and the dad leaves to go find work elsewhere. We loved the mystery and the suspense and the whole experience was super fun.

great opportunity to talk about economic hardship
I liked how the movie was able to walk a fine line between empathy for people in poverty without scaring my kids that they were losing their home. It became a great opportunity to talk about why people lose their homes, why people hide their financial problems, how families deal with circumstances beyond their control, and that having or not having money does not make you a good or bad person. In the wake of recent foreclosures and higher unemployment, it was really helpful to have this chance to talk to my kids about what I mean when I say, "We don't have enough money to buy that..." What I mean is that we have to make choices, set priorities, and one of those priorities is saving for more difficult times and for emergencies. In addition, my kids were thoroughly entertained; although I'll say that it's a little ironic to have this movie about economic hardship brought to us by a high-end toy retailer for girls. Anyway, we enjoyed it and had a lot to talk about afterwards.

It's actually not that bad; pretty good!
I saw this movie, and to tell you the truth, I'm NOT an American Girl fan at all. But, this movie was pretty good and it wasn't really stupid. It's about the depression and some parts are pretty sad. It's not very American Girlish, in my opinion. I think it's something anyone will enjoy. Oh, and parents, you don't need to worry about anything in this movie. It's clean and there's no swearing or anything that would raise a concern.

Awesome for American Girl's first.
For American Girl's first on the big screen this was pretty good. The story is mainly about a young girl growing up in the middle of the depression. No language or violence, but a wild chase at the end. Some flirting but nothing past that. Good PG movie. Great for the family. 7+
