A bit violent, but with good messages and role models (mostly)!
This movie is a bit violent, but its nothing more mature kids can't handle. It has some good messages in it. Even when Morpheus was captured the Agents, and the others wanted to kill him before he gave them any information, Neo was determined to get him out of there and did. He never gave up on his friend and saved Morpheus's life. The violence and swearing in this is definatly PG-13 and not R.
It's so cool, I can't even come up with a title that's witty and sarcastic enough to keep up with those of my other reviews.
The Matrix is essentially the best movie I have ever watched (besides the unchallenged The Guns of Naverone). The acting is superb, the special effects are amazing, and everything else you could want is a film is there. It's sovereign-ness really comes out in the lobby scene (one of the most cliched scenes of all time, sadly). But, now for the bad stuff...
Sex: 1/5. One of Morpheus' teammates, Mouse, talks about a computer simulation which includes an attractive blonde who is meant to be a distraction, and offers to "introduce" her to Neo, stating that "to deny our impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human". Another of Morpheus' teammates, Switch, then calls Mouse "the digital pimp". Later, Mouse is seen in Morpheus' mansion looking at a picture of the woman with lots of X's and "hot woman"'s written all over it.
Violence: 4/5. In the beginning, Neo is being interrogated by Smith. When Smith says "What good is a phone call...if you're unable to speak?" in a response to Neo's begs for a phone call. Then, Neo's moth closes up like it's melting and he is forced onto the table. A robotic tracking bug is placed in his belly button, leaving lot's of green goo all over the place. Later, Trinity uses a large, scary-looking device to extract it. Neo's belly button is electrocuted, and in the business end of the gun (which is a clear tube) there appears to be a squirming...something that is surrounded by red material I preferred not to try to identify.
Language: 2/5. Mild curses. In the interrogation scene between Neo and Smith, Neo gives Smith the middle finger.
The Matrix is completely awesome. It is not very difficult to understand and on the edge of R and PG-13. There are some gunfights and fistfights, but there isnt really any gore, only some blood. S--t, g--d-mn, h-ll, and a-- is really the worst it gets. They are not even used a lot. I was surprised when there were NO f-words. Overall, this movie was epicly awesome. It was about as violent as the "Dark Knight", was easier to understand than "Inception", and had less language than "Hancock", all of which were PG-13. So I suggest this movie to 11+.
Modern masterpiece that might frighten and confuse some tweens
Now a cult film, the Matrix bent minds upon its release in many new and unpleasant ways. This movie is great in how it makes us question what reality truly is and how the future of our industrial world will play out if we aren't careful (think 'The Terminator' taken up a notch, and with more style). Can be a liitle scary and disturbing, though. Be careful with younger kids. If they can take the heat, definitely worth multiple watches.
When I first saw the matrixI was twelve, and I fell in love with the entire trilogy. The violence isn't too bad. Sure there's blood but the more violent parts are brief. It's nothing a pre-teen can't handle. It's fantastic with special effects and cool action, not to mention that the plot is great. Personally I think that the R-rating is a bit shaky. While the language is a bit heavy I have seen lower rated movies that have worse language. It would be rated more accurately as a heavy PG-13. All in all I enjoyed it, a definite buy.
I love this movie. The acting is brilliant, as is the storyline and special effects. Most of the main characters are good role models as they are loyal, determined and care about each other (apart from Cipher, who betrays his friends and kills all but three of them). However, there is no way that this is a 14+ movie.
First of all, on the disk, there are two age ratings. One says 15+ and the other says 18+. The romance (two gentle kisses) is not so much of a problem, as is the Oracle's smoking and the few swear words. The biggest issue is the violence and intensity. There's a lot of gun play and blood. Morpheus is brutally beaten up in one scene and then tortured. Neo is shot at least five times and shoots several other men. There's also this creepy bug that's implanted into his stomach. Gross. I also remember the scene where Cipher kills Dozer and nearly kills Tank (you see a lot of charred flesh).
Don't get me wrong, though. It's an AWESOME movie, but just NOT a 14+.
Disturbing/gross at times, but overall, I am very surprised that this was rated R.
I really enjoyed this movie. Yes it is rather strange, but I loved it. There is a scene where it shows the people in the farms, and that is intentionally disturbing, Aside from that, there was nothing in this movie that I think was worth and R rating. The violence was a bit more bloody than a PG-13 movie, but I've seen pleanty of movies rated PG-13 that were much more intense than this. (E.g.: The Dark Knight, I am Legend, Beowulf...) No sexuality at all, and the language was more like your typical PG-13 than it is an R. I suggest that this movie is appropriate for all teens 14 and up, and will be loved by any teens that see it.

I rate The Matrix iffy for ages 12-13
Parents need to know that although this movie was rated R for violence, teens, and even tweens, should be able to handle it. There are lots of PG13 movies more violent than this.
VIOLENCE: 4/5- LOTS of shooting, some but not too much blood, knife throws, special martial arts fighting, a bug that enters the body through the belly button, and a few other stuff less gross than that.
PROFANITY: 1/5- Average for PG13

Excellent movie, despite the language (a lot of it, such as s--t, d--n, and gd.) The violence was slightly over moderate, but not strong (Common Sense, the violence deserved 4 stars!). Some bloody scenes, but no gore. In fact, there was a part where a knife gets thrown into someone's head, but they turn the camera. Despite having no gore, there were some kind of gross scenes. (SPOILER) The Matrix (our world) is a computer program. When you enter the real world, you are in these capsules, and you are basically like a baby (who is never born, and fed to robots). When Neo gets released from his capsule, he is covered in goo, and has wires hooked up to him. Kind of an "Eeewwww" moment. Anyway, there is a few parts where a people smoke, and drink. No big deal in my opinion. Kids see guys smoking all the time. very captivating. A must see. Very surprised it was rated R. Should have been PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi violence, disturbing images, and language.
This is a very entertaining movie with lots of philosophy and action. I would definitely recommend it. And it really should be PG-13.
Violence: a man has a mechanical bug inserted into his belly button (no blood). When it is taken out, we see blood on the bug. There is kung fu action and a good dose of explosions. A woman throws a knife into a man's forehead, but there is surprisingly... n blood. A man uses a sci-fi weapon to shoot electricity into two other men's chest. We see one of them with a charred wound on his stomach. A man and a woman walk into a lobby with guns and basically shoot all the guards there; minimal blood.
Sex: one kiss. A little innuendo, but nothing explicit.
Language: about 20 s-words and a smattering of "h**l," "d**n," "a**," and "b**ch." No f-words, but there is one middle finger.
Drugs: characters drink what is presumably alcohol on occasion. A few references to drugs, but nothing major.
