Just as good as the original, though not quite as fun with a few dark parts
Dead Man's Chest is the second installment in the Pirates trilogy, and it points to good things for the final movie (already filmed with Dead Man's Chest). Everything good about the first movie returns, sometimes literally, with throwbacks to the first one and even some important characters making a surprise return (wait until the end, then you'll understand). The acting is good, and Depp continues to shine as Jack Sparrow. However, it did feel that some of the Jack mannerisms were a bit forced, which I assume would be the director trying to exploit everyone's liking for Depp's eccentric role. Nighy plays Davey Jones well, albeit he is masked under a Gollum-esque disguise of special effects. My only warning is that if you don't like cliff-hangers, you might be disappointed with the ending (which, in my opinion, was well-done). That, and I also thought the characters had diminished roles form the first one, seeing as we already knew who they were, so it didn't have the fun of learning all their quirks and whatnot.
Pretty good film is a little more graphic than the first.
Honestly, if your kid watched the first one with no problems at all, then they would be totally fine with this one. If they did have some problems, maybe you should watch it first and see if they could handle it. When they find the heart, it might be a little nasty for the squeamish person, but be advised that it isn't a human heart. It's a weird oval-shaped thing that beats and has way more than 4 arterie thingys. But yeah, It was awesome.
Parts of this movie were disgusting, even for myself, with a tough stomach. First of all, Davy Jones and his crew are all disfigured, grotesque men turned sea creatures. Def. not for kids under 13, in my opinion.
Second, there seemed to be a lot more "voodoo" influence on the native islanders. More superstition... trying to make it interesting, but giving the movie an eerie effect. Personally, I don't like movies that incorporate witchcraft in them, but some parents might be more complacent about this issue. Third, Elizabeth and Jack Sparrow's make out scene wasn't necessary. It had nothing to do with the general plot. As in the above issue, some parents may be okay with letting their kids watch that.
Overall, this movie was confusing and worse than the first. It had a weird plot outline and I think lots of kids (especially girls) who are "up-to-date" with pop culture are just going to watch it for the actors/actresses and/or the romance scenes. Very shallow. Disney could have done better on this one.
Of course, the morals are fairly pathetic (lying, cowardice, betrayal, cheating... of course it is about pirates ahem...) and I don't recommend a steady diet of anti-morals whatsoever, but this is the one I'd watch for pure fun!
My 11 year old is a little sensitive to scary or creepy stuff, so he chose not to see it on his own. My 13 year old loved it, but I don't think as much as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. But I love some action/adventure but with humor! Too bad they closed down CLEAN FILMS (edited video rentals)... that let my kids see a lot more videos than they ever will get to see now.
i liked it to say the least, but honestly davy jones and his crew had way to many effects that it came to the point where i kinda thot they werent gross...just stupid! jack sparrow was great as usual all the awesum lines but will turner?? that scene with the natives "come one! i could do this all day!!" umm...that didnt seem like him AT ALL it was just DUM. and the jack with the toes... ew... oh and for someone who sed the scene with elizabeth and jack was uneccesary, u would be rite! the only reason it was in there at all was bcuz kiera knightly INSISTED on havin a smoochin scene w/ jonny depp! LOL i did like it and could watch it again but the first was better..
After the first 10 minutes I wondered how a young person under 13 years old watching this movie would process the crows eating people trapped in cages? It only got worse from there with almost non stop violence which I am afraid our society has come to accept as entertainment. The fist fighting, stabbing, throat slashing, head chopping, etc. continued throughout the movie.
This is definitely not a movie for young children to watch!
This movie is great for preteens and up. There is a lot of action but also a lot of violence. There are of course sword fights and pirateer scenes (high seas and primitive islands) but there is a scene where Will's father (a barnicle covered seaman) has to give him five lashes with a whip, blood is shone on his back afterwards. There is also a scene when one of the crewmen from the Flying Dutchman loses his head and carries it about the island.
There is some humor and a good story line regarding friendship and loyalty. A big question in this movie is how true do you stay to your friends with regards to laws and government - not to mention moral choices. It is interesting to see how much is placed on the conscience of these characters - too much for younger kids to digest.
One of the points that stuck out was seeking a higher power. Out of desperation, Jack seeks the council of a voodoo priestess. Now, I do not particularly care for voodoo or black magic, but we are talking pirates. There is also reference to Rigetti (the wooden-eyed pirate and his little buddy that hated "parley") and Pentelli referencing the Bible to ammend their souls since they are mortal beings again.
I loved the movie as an adult and would say it's enjoyable if you liked the first movie. There is a deeper focus on "pirate lore" and some of the myths and legends surrounding pirates.
This was an okay movie, but not near as good as the first. A little too fanciful, and kind of all over the place. A few innuendos, a few swear words, and some violence. Nothing overt. Okay movie that whould keep you interested.
We took our 12 and 8 year old. The 8 year old wasn't scared at all but I think that's because he saw the first movie. There were fewer skeletons than in the first movie and he thought Bootstrap Bill was cool-looking Lots of fun.
The special effects & CGI were mind blowing for Pirates 2, shame the story wasn't as up to snuff. I was confused by the storyline & found that I thought more favorably about the movie when I didn't think about it too much.
Johnny Depp was his usual wonderful self, what a talent!
This movie was incredibly violent and had terrifying monsters. There must have been AT LEAST 200 drownings, not to mention the other more central violent deaths. There were many children in the theatre CRYING in fear. There is NO way this movie should be touted as safe entertainment for kids.
I love this movie. I can see it over and over again. Yes there's violence, and Yes there is drinking, but I'm an adult. My kids (oldest 9) haven't seen it yet. Lovin' it for adults and teens though!
This movie, though rather long, was a completely awesome movie. It had it's funny moments, with a ton of action, just like the first movie. Can't wait for the third installment! :D
