Pokemon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior (NR, 2009)

common sense media says

Mildly violent tale of dark and light, anime style.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this movie will thrill Pokémon fans, but a helpful intro makes it accessible to newbies. Cartoonish mild violence occurs throughout, and one character appears to be electrocuted. The main human characters are a boy and girl who operate well as a team, along with their Pokémon buddies.

Positive messages: Emphasis on helping friends, teamwork, and bravery. Shaymin is a gratitude Pokémon with a singularly ungracious attitude towards one character, which is pointed out repeatedly. One character sacrifices his life's work when he realizes that to complete it would put the world in harm's way.
Violence & scariness: Cartoonish mild fighting throughout, with weapons ranging from thunderbolts to seed flares to flying magnets. Giratina appears to be electrocuted in a machine designed to kill him.
Sexy stuff: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: May induce sudden need for Pokémon trading cards.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about how Ash and Dawn overcome their aversion to Giratina when it becomes apparent that there is a bigger problem. Have you had a situation where someone you disliked or feared became an ally? Which of the Pokémon powers in this movie do you wish you had, and why?

What's the story?

What's the story?

In the eleventh Pokémon anime movie, POKÉMON: GIRATINA AND THE SKY WARRIOR, unlikely allies cooperate to face a greater evil. A cuddly Pokémon named Shaymin (voiced by Amy Palant) is inadvertently caught in a battle between the Reverse World-dwelling Giratina and its real world counterweight Dialga that ends in an imbalance of time and space between the two dimensions. Shaymin is rescued by battle students Ash (Sarah Natochenny) and Dawn (Emily Bauer) and their Pokémon sidekicks, who try to help Shaymin reach a magical garden that will transform it into a higher form. They must resist efforts by the evil Zero (Brian Ferguson) as well as Giratina to bring Shaymin back to the Reverse World, and unravel the mystery of how the Reverse World maintains the one in which they exist.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

While the plot sounds complicated, it's fairly straightforward once you realize there are four villains with varying degrees of badness, and Pokémon powers with varying levels of effectiveness. These two dimensions are brought into contact repeatedly amidst skilled animation that superimposes anime-style action over beautiful static backgrounds resembling Lake Como and Norwegian fishing villages. Stiff dialogue, weak jokes, and confounding Pokémon skills (an aromatherapy move?) probably won't detract from the entertainment for Pokémon fans.

For youngest kids, the nonstop action and cute-as-a-button antics and voices of the Pokémon helpers will be enough. For older kids, there's a message about helping others, facing challenges, and doing the right thing, even when that means working with former enemies.

cool!
It's not the best movie that they made, but it's not the worst. It's a little violent, but that's basically what Pokemon's about, Pokemon versus other Pokemon. It can be scary at parts.

Good for kids of any age
Cool flick and great animation, and kinda cute.

disappointing
I saw this and was appauled. Being a girl brought up with the Pokemon films, I'm used to the ones with less fighting and more touching scenes. Sadly, this was 100% fighting. None of the stuff I used to love. So sadly, this disappointed me 100%. It's OK for the younger generation though, as they are used to the 'New Pokemon' But I didn't like it
