What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this made-for-TV movie, while charming, is likely to feed the obsession of any little girls who are already fascinated by the marketing juggernaut that is the "Disney princesses" (ABC Family is a Disney subsidiary). Overall, the content is tame and appropriate for young grade-schoolers and up, but there are some monsters, so very young or those who have trouble distinguishing between fantasy and reality might be frightened. But even the scariest creature, a three-headed reptile, isn't any more alarming than a dinosaur. It's worth noting that in order to show how crass one supporting character is, he makes a couple of brief comments that play on "gay" stereotypes.

Positive messages: Overall, the movie has a positive theme about finding your true self and believing in love. A couple of comments revolve around "gay" stereotypes ("How gay is that?" asks William's crass buddy, when talking about going to a charity ball with his male friend). The primary cast is all Caucasian.
Violence & scariness: There are monsters, some of whom attack; in one scene, William waves an axe at one to defend himself and Ithaca.
Sexy stuff: Mild comment about how any guy with hormones would like dating the princess. Fairy tale-type romance between William and Ithaca.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Plays into the "Disney princess" obsession of many little girls.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: The guys drink beer from bottles in two scenes. Wine is offered and drunk here and there.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about the movie's argument that, at one time or another, every girl wants to be a princess. Kids: Is that true? What it is about being a princess that would be cool? Also, in this case, being a princess means helping those in need. Does that change your image of a princess? How? Families can also discuss how special effects are done, including computer animation. Which images are live-action, and which are a combination of live-action and animation? How can you tell?

What's the story?

What's the story?

William (Kip Pardue) is a lost soul, a trust fund kid with no direction in life. Then he meets mysterious, beautiful Princess Ithaca (Nora Zehetner) at her annual charity ball. When he accidently says exactly the right thing, Ithaca thinks he's the Searcher that she's been waiting for to help her with an important task. William, thinking she's just a little crazy, goes along with it. It turns out that Ithaca, a healer for mythical creatures, needs this Searcher to find the next healer (another orphan princess) within a few days so that she can pass her powers on.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

There's something so charming and mostly innocent about this tale of searching for yourself and finding true love that the script's slight clunkiness and the somewhat shallow characterizations don't seem to matter. PRINCESS is a cotton-candy kind of movie, sweet and ephemeral in the best way. Though Zehetner's Ithaca is a little bit one-note, Pardue does a fabulous job as the lost soul. And, fortunately, this is William's story. So check your logic at the door and just be swept away by the fun of it all.

Too scary, sexist, stupid and bad for girls
My girls are 6 and 7 and they were enraptured by the insanely pretty Princess. However, the monsters were REALLY scary and both my kids screamed and burst into tears. They are still talking about it. My kids see a fair bit of stuff, they aren't wimps, the wolf man thing was scary!! I also thought the "friend" of the main male character was revolting and manipulative and sexist. I didn't like his objectification of the Princess. As others mentioned the homophobia was there too. Overall the story is still the same old Princess, the whole world revolves around being pretty and getting married. Very disappointing that this stuff is still being made for girls. Also, they tried to convince us the Princess was 25?? Please. WHERE are the good stories??

This movie was not appopiate for kids. It is not a good message and is garbage. It is also showing kids dinking and gay comments, which is not appopriate for their young minds. I was highly upset with the content in this movie.

Sexist and just plain awful!
Poorly written, poorly acted. Main two characters are sexist. There is a discussion about things like "...she gave me a book so I could have a sympathetic pregnancy with her...it tells all about what pregnancy does to your wife's body..." Totally inappropriate dialogue for a "family" movie. Shame on you ABC Family!

Not a Family Movie
We turned it off after about 17 minutes and after way too much unnecessary dialogue and unnecessary information including lines about virgins, lesbians ... enough already. That's not Family for any age. C'mon!

Sweet Princess
My husband and I enjoyed watching this movie with our 4 year old daughter. I suggest watching it with your young child, some of the scenes are a little frightening before you are made aware the Princess cares for mythical creatures.
