I think this movie is great! A true love story that is really sweet. Though profanity is treated fairly casually in this movie. "My God" maybe commonly used as an exclamation, but I find it more offensive than vulgarity. Also the sick boy uses "Jesus" as an exclamation guite clearly at one point. Otherwise this movie is better than most movies I have seen. The humour and the heroism with fantasy have created a cute love story. It also is very educational to teach children what true love means.

A True Family Favorite
Unendingly witty and engaging story of courage and True Love triumphing. Our family has enjoyed it many times and will do so many more. It's a reference standard for us of good movies. Our 5-year son is not concerned by the scarier stuff; for more impressionable kids it might make sense to wait a few years.

Perfect for adults.
It was okay, but it was extremely violent. It had blood in it and would give little kids nightmares. (Review by my 7.5 year old son - who saw it at camp).

over all a great movie for the family. Nothing that major to mess up the movie.

Beware of violence, suggestive humor, and a scene involving contemplated suicide--not appropriate for very young viewers.
This is a wonderful movie which incorporates the lost art of chivalry and relatively clean, witty humor. However, there is considerable drama and violence, and I would not yet show this movie to my six-year-old daughter. I am the old-fashioned type, however, who is still flaberghasted to see people bring their 8 year-olds to a PG-13 movie. There are a couple of issues not listed on the main review that are a cause for concern, specifically in the scene when the heroine holds a dagger to her breast and intends to commit suicide--which is an issue for me when it comes to younger viewers. The hero makes the comment, "There is a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours." This has obvious sexual implications. Nontheless, I look forward to sharing this romantic comedy with my daughter--in three or four years.

misogynistic and violent
Two things alarmed me about this movie .. on the surface the torture scene was more than I wanted my 6-yr-old to watch. Deeper than that, the movie is misogynistic .. the lead female character is literally just brought along while all the action takes place among the men.

Awesome Movie for Kids
kids will love this funny romantic fairytale.

It's good and it's not good
I first saw it in college when I had some friends who constantly quoted it and said it was the best movie ever. I enjoyed it but wasn't overwhelmed by it. The scene I loved best and most remembered was the duel of wits between Carey Elwes and Wallace Shawn over which cup had the poison. That is great stuff. I viewed it again this year, considering whether it would be right for my 8 year old daughter. You know what surprises me? The other reviewers either dismiss as "mild" or ignore the torture machine scene. There is no way I am showing that to my daughter. I find it unsettling at my age. Is no one else bothered by the screams as all the life is literally sucked out of Westley? I know we're supposed to go with the deadpan "scientific curiosity" of toruturer, but this scene is really quite horriffic. Also, I have to saw that I don't care for any aspect of the Magic Max scenes - not funny, not even well acted.

One of my favorites, but it depends on the kid
I have always loved this movie; I can't remember a time when I didn't. When I was a kid, I had a self-imposed tradition of watching it on Christmas Day in the afternoon when I was bored. Recently my stepdaughter (6.75 at the time) was sick in bed and my husband and I decided we'd watch it with her. What a mistake! I hope we didn't ruin it for her forever. I always thought, "what's not to like?" but she's not really used to movies with almost constant fighting, a lot of witty (but often fast-paced and subtle) dialog, and very little overt physical comedy. Most of the jokes went over her head, and she proclaimed it to be "scary" and "boring". The sort of magical parts (Miracle Max, Westley's return) aren't the fantastic and wondrous "Disney-style" magic, either. All in all, a great movie in my opinion, but not really for kids under 8 or 9 unless they have a decent sense of nuance.

Even though I'm the world's biggest prude...
I let my 4 year old watch this movie, because it's my favorite movie in the world. It's not sooo bad...*blush* Ok, yeah, so there's torture, death by poisoning yada yada yada. It's a great movie. And as other reviewers mentioned, it's all pretty cartoony. I agree with the reviewer who said this is on the very mild side of pg. It's certainly not G by any means, but it's much milder than many pg movies, and considering there are still G movies I don't let my kid watch because of violence or drug use, this movie's doing well.

Fun, Witty Adventure!
Fun stuff here. No sex, just some kissing. The only language is one b**ch. Violence is mild and bloodless. Fun for everyone. Guaranteed to make you laugh!

A classic
A fantastic, warming film. The title presents it as a girly movie, but this is far from it. There is some great swordplay in it. I believe the only curse word in it is when Inigo is avenging his father's death (one of my favourite scenes from the movie, my favourite being when Inigo and the protagonist swordfight). There is blood in this movie; it would have been too much for me at a younger age, but with the things younger kids are exposed to now, it shouldn't be a problem. There are not many words to describe a movie like this. All I can say is simply fantastic.

a must see
for all the movies that are rated pg that should have a higher rating, this one should be the opposite. i think the only reason it is pg and not g is because there are a few moderately frightening scenes and lots of swordplay, but nothing that kids don't see on kids tv shows. the storyline is wonderful and my family has seen it probably around 50 times over the last 15 years. every time my son was home sick from school he wanted to watch it!

Witty adventure film with a comic twist
This movie is a classic as far as I'm concerned. I loved the book too.

This is a really good movie that can be enjoyed by anyone. The violence is questionable because a main character is tortured to death, kinda... The characters are intriguing; swordsmen, 6-fingered man, the giant and the 'smart' dude. This is one of my favorite but not too good for kids under 10.

LOVE
Ok, so I was freaked out by the ROUS when I was like 4... had nightmares... but this is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. Every memebr of my family knows the whole thing by heart and we never tire of it.

Actually quite boring...
This movie is very over-hyped. I've seen it several times and never understood why it has such a cult-following. If you want to see something in a similar vein but with a much wittier and entertaining plot, take a look at Ella Enchanted.

A real classical gem
I first saw this movie when I was about 8 and was slightly traumatized by the eels and rats which were pretty scary. But that was in the 80's maybe not anymore. This is the greatest movie ever so romantic and hilarious I never met anyone who didn't adore it. Really clean- a coupla chaste kisses and one weird comment about breasts. Otherwise absolutely incredible highly recommended. A treasure for grownups and kids alike.

Fantastic
This movie is great for the whole family - enough action and adventure for younger children, and plenty of witty dialogue for older viewers.

Watch The Movie, Read The Book!!!
I don't remember the first time I saw "The Princess Bride", but its been mine and my older brother's favorite movie forever. It's a grate movie with lots of: action, adventure, comedy, treachery, and romance. I watch this movie over and over agen. The movie stays prity close to the book, witch is one reason why it's so good. I recomend that you read the book it's rilly good.

No more rhymes now, I mean it. Anybody want a Peanut?
That is what I think is the funniest line in this funny, funny, funny movie. This movie has something for everyone: fantasy, action, humor, and even flowers! (Yes, the protagonist is named after a flower). There is torture but it's not as graphic as it seems, and a lot of swashbuckling action. Also, Inigo says "You killed my father son of a b!tc#" but that's all. Watch this movie and see why fairytales can be funny.

I don't mean to pry...
...but you don't happen to have six fingers on your right hand? This is a very, very funny movie. you can't help not liking it. It tops any other adventure movie I've seen so far, (such as Pirates of the Carribean...don't get me started...) and although it's got some language and risque dialodge ("There's such a shortage of perfect bosoms in this world. 'Twod be a pity to damage yours.") it's not that bad. When the R.O.U.S. attacks, that is pretty intense, but anyone over age 10 should be able to handle it.

A Great Movie!
The Princess Bride is a classic fairy tale that every single family should definitely see. There is some violence and one character says 'son of a b-tch' to another, but besides that it is appropriate for all families. Good for kids 9+
