This movie is highly underrated and thought of as just another "new guy in prison" type of movie but, the messages of friendship make this movie one in a million. The movie chronicles Andy Dufrasne, a man wrongly convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover. He meets "Red" a man who can get "anything for anybody" which is a common role in prison movies he even says, "there must be one like me in every prison". These unlikely friends help save each other in the end, Andy saves Red's soul, which was calloused from prison life. And Red saved Andy, teaching him all he needed to know about prison life. Although there is some lude remarks and alcohol consumption in the movie, the good definately outweighs the bad in this case. (SPOILER ALERT) If you have ever seen a prison movie ending you know the ending to The Shawshank Redemption. Both Andy and Red gain redemption in a dismal, dark prison by doing good deeds for one another. As you know, Red will escape Shawshank, Andy will escape Shawshank, but your soul will never escape The Shawshank Redemption.
An enduring and long drama. I personaly think it is overated and is appropriate for MATURE 10 year old's. Mainly due to strong language and a few scenes of brutal but realsitic prison scenes. I would have no qualms showing this to someone over 11 however.
For my husband and I, this is one of our favorite movies of all time. However, it is not for kids. Too many issues familiar to prison life. But it is one of the most inspirational movies we've ever watched, and so well made. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are phenomenal.
Great movie for teenagers. I was comfortable with my 14 year old watching it. There is some violence and some sexual situations, but they were in context.
This is an incredible movie with a touching story and incredible friendships. Theres a good amount of language, some mature topics, and violence in a few scenes. Every kid 15 and up has to see this movie!
This movie made me laugh and it made me cry, This is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite movie ranked in my top 5 list.
The movie is based in a prison, where violence, sexual references and profanity are part of the daily life. The story line is excellent with great performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman especially. I have watched this movie over 20 times and still enjoy it every time I see it just as much as the first time.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time! Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman excel, and the music and cinematography propel this film forward(I think it will become a classic). Parents need to watch out for a ton of strong language, as well as some disturbing (but mostly non-graphic) violence and a brief but passionate make-out scene in the beginning.
