I found the movie extremely entertaining, quite disturbing, yet very good. I would recommend it to 14 year olds and over, but it may affect those who are younger with the twisted plot. Despite some foul language and quite a bit of violence, due to the main charachter being an ex-soldier, it is still an amazing movie; one of my favourites!

17 and older seriously theres only one serious part and thats when theres a brief part showing some naked man but it only lasts like 3 seconds and most ppl have seen whata naked man looks like i have 5 cousins who atre all girls 7-15 except for a baby brother and when i go there thay fight opver who changes the diaper ? lol but ok movie and it was confusing not as scary as everybody says it is

I love this movie very much. I am 13. It should be ok for a 13 yr old to watch. There is a part where full frontal nudity is shown, just fast forward it, like I did. There's smoking and drinking and maybe the language is maybe a bit harsh. There is some violence too. But as for smoking and violence, if the viewer is mature enough, they can decide if it is right or wrong.It gives a rather positive message if you understand it in the end. I would reccommend to watch with an adult, its a very confusing story but very epic once you understand it. Greatest movie ever.

What to watch out for * Messages: The movie deals with the limits of the human mind and the sheer amount of horror and torment it can take before it snaps. It also examines the extent to which humans are capable of violence and evil. Some characters may or may not have good intentions, but the movie deliberately blurs this behavior in the service of the story. Some conversation about belief in God. * Role models: The hero is not much of a role model. He has twin goals: One of them requires bravery and selflessness and the other, selfish revenge. But whether he achieves either of these goals is up for debate. He also exhibits violent and erratic behavior throughout and does not play well with others. (On the other hand, he does risk his life in one sequence to save his partner.) Other characters do not seem trustworthy or reliable either. * Violence: Quite a few disturbing flashbacks and nightmare sequences, with piles of dead bodies in the Dachau concentration camp, a failed suicide attempt (the victim lays twitching in a puddle of blood), drowned children, a woman's body burning, shooting victims, and more blood. One scene shows the mass slaughter of Nazi guards by American soldiers; their bodies are riddled with bullets as they collapse, one by one, in a line. There are also scary images, such as prisoners grabbing through prison bars at the hero. * Sex: No sex, but in a flashback sequence we see a little kissing between an affectionate married couple. Brief flash of unclothed male prisonors. * Language: The words "f--k" is heard about a dozen times; "s--t" a few times. We also hear "d--k," "p---k," "c--k," "sc-ew that," "da--it," "Jesus Christ," and "Godd--n it." * Consumerism: Not an issue. * Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Characters smoke cigarettes often, and one character smokes a pipe. The main character once had a drinking problem, but now abstains from liquor. We see him drinking whisky in flashbacks. Other characters drink in a social way. The hospital uses various sedatives and other kinds of drugs on the patients. The hero takes aspirins and there is a suggestion that they might be laced with hallucinogens or other drugs. We see the effects of these drugs through the eyes of the hero.

Let me tell you now that most kids will not understand it as it is very confusing but it is a good film. The worst about it is the disturbing imagery (Note the bodies of three decapitated children) The sexual content is minimum except for very brief full male nudity (people on here should stop being so immature about this) and there is some bloody violence but not excessive. And the final scene is not for the faint hearted.

Some parts are disturbing.

Martin Scorsese is a extremely well known director who has been in the business for many years, directing classic after classic like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed and much, much more. In fact, he is such a well known director, that I guess I really didn't even have to explain all of that to anyone in the first place, so...oops. Anyways, Shutter Island is easily one of his best movies, and is a brain twisting feat of imagination that may well actually, literally, leave you breathless, in this case. But, this is definitely not for kids, because there is much disturbing violence, including many dead bodies including women and children, the dead bloody drownings of several children, a mans face covered in blood, and more. Also, there is extremely brief nudity in a prison shower cell, even though the lighting is very dark. Finally, there is frequent casual smoking and pervasive profanity that gets much more frequent as the movie draws towards a close. Well, if you are a Scorsese fan and honestly haven't seen this movie yet, than you most certainly owe it to yourself to do so.

i am twelve and I was fine with this movie it was pretty violent but it was great.
