First half perfect for preschoolers
Our 3.5 year old daughter adores this movie, but she only sees the 1st half of the show (we end it after "So Long, Farewell"). I think that the chase & gun scenes later in the movie would be very scary to her right now, but the 1st half of the movie is just right for a preschooler with lots of singing, dancing, etc. A bonus for our household: The scene with "My Favorite Things" features a thunderstorm, which has made our daughter less fearful about lightning and thunder in general.

Excellent for a musically inclined, thoughtful child
This was a huge hit with my 4 year old daughter. She's seen it dozens of times by now, though rarely all the way through because it's long. Parts of it took some explaining, of course, but most of the characters are readily understandable and the songs are instantly accessible and addictive. I'm not sure there's a better way for a child to first encounter the huge topic of the Nazis: they're introduced well into the film as obviously bad but in a very nondescript way, they're ominous but not explicitly violent.

One of My Favorite Things
Some scenes of drinking in a very excellent classic, but it is very long. 174 minues to be exact. Yet there is nothing parents will find too upseting other than the context that it takes place during WWII. Like other classics, kids will like the musical parts, and adults will enjoy just as much if not more.

Beautiful, my favorite movie!!!
This is a beautiful movie! I've loved it ever since I can remember! I've always hoped that my school could do this movie as a play and that I could play Maria. Julie Andrews is one of my favorite actors and singers! I wish I could sing like her! It's her best movie! My favorite scenes are when they Von Trapps are hiding in the abbey and the opening scene. I like the tension when the Nazis look for the family. Plus I love how well the family handles their fear and shows so much bravery, even little Gretel. And the opening scene is breathtaking! Julie Andrews sings beautifully in that scene (well she always sings beautifully). I saw the movie over at Tuacaun and it was amazing! Plus I love that this movie is based off of a real family's expereance. I'd love to read the book someday! This movie is amazing!!! I love it!!!!!!!!!

Great for the entire family
Love this for watching with my 4 year old and 18 month old. Pick any disney movie, any one ... an it is scarier than this. The singing is lovely and my girls love to dance and clap along. There is some close dancing and a couple of kiss scenes.

Wonderful movie with wonderful theme and wonderful music.
Wonderful movie! Maria is a musical, virtuous, loving, brave, honest, and perfect.. Captain Vonn Trapp is a good man at heart although at first he makes his children live as if they were in the army. It demonstrates courage and the might to do what you want if you think you are right. This is a lovely movie with wonderful, soothing music.

Musical Numbers Great For All Ages!
We have been showing our 2 year old the musical numbers and he loves them. Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, So Long, Farewell, and Lonely Goatherd all are fantastic out of context. We have tried to watch the movie with him from the beginning, but in the first 30 minutes so much of it was going over his head that he quickly lost interest and walked up to the TV to turn it off. We'll just stick to the musical parts until he is quite a bit older.

Great Family Watch Together Movie - make Popcorn!
My five year old daughter just watched for the first time and hasn't stopped singing the songs. Loved the kids. The parts I was concerned might worry her, she didn't seem to care about and she really took to the kids and the music.

How could anyone hate it?! Beautiful!
First of all, the lady that the Captain is supposed to marry has the greatest wardrobe....I wish I had those dresses! This is an absolute classic and I shake my head in pity of anyone who does not like it and categorizes it as "boring". It has wonderful performances by all of the actors and the music is beautiful. I love "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", that scene makes me cry. Excellent movie for any age.

Perfect beginning for discussions on war and non-violence
Movies, especially recent releases, are sensory overload for my daughter and this was an absolutely perfect experience for her. Not to say that there weren't tears and/or emotional bits for her - when Maria leaves and the end when she is unsure if they will get away. There are a few things within the movie that warrant conversation after: 1) being from a non-christian home there was quite a bit of discussion of convents/nuns. 2) war and non-violence I think it was a perfect vehicle for discussing war with younger children because the characters she grew to love were ones that were against the war and choosing non-voilence (taking gun from the young boy even). Not a single shot or act of violence (not even comedic) throughout the ENTIRE movie which gets it a big thumps up from our family.

Yodel ay, Yodel ay, Yodel ay ee oo!
This movie is da bomb! I saw it when I was really little and have been watching it ever since! One scene I always liked was when the did "The Lonely Goatherd" puppet song thingy...I still like it 11 years later. The ending with them hiding in the abbey (however you spell it) might be kinda scary for young kidlings, but overall that a remarkable movie!
