Our 3.5 year old daughter adores this movie, but she only sees the 1st half of the show (we end it after "So Long, Farewell"). I think that the chase & gun scenes later in the movie would be very scary to her right now, but the 1st half of the movie is just right for a preschooler with lots of singing, dancing, etc. A bonus for our household: The scene with "My Favorite Things" features a thunderstorm, which has made our daughter less fearful about lightning and thunder in general.
Excellent for a musically inclined, thoughtful child
This was a huge hit with my 4 year old daughter. She's seen it dozens of times by now, though rarely all the way through because it's long. Parts of it took some explaining, of course, but most of the characters are readily understandable and the songs are instantly accessible and addictive. I'm not sure there's a better way for a child to first encounter the huge topic of the Nazis: they're introduced well into the film as obviously bad but in a very nondescript way, they're ominous but not explicitly violent.
Love this for watching with my 4 year old and 18 month old. Pick any disney movie, any one ... an it is scarier than this.
The singing is lovely and my girls love to dance and clap along.
There is some close dancing and a couple of kiss scenes.
We have been showing our 2 year old the musical numbers and he loves them. Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, So Long, Farewell, and Lonely Goatherd all are fantastic out of context. We have tried to watch the movie with him from the beginning, but in the first 30 minutes so much of it was going over his head that he quickly lost interest and walked up to the TV to turn it off. We'll just stick to the musical parts until he is quite a bit older.
My five year old daughter just watched for the first time and hasn't stopped singing the songs. Loved the kids. The parts I was concerned might worry her, she didn't seem to care about and she really took to the kids and the music.
First of all, the lady that the Captain is supposed to marry has the greatest wardrobe....I wish I had those dresses! This is an absolute classic and I shake my head in pity of anyone who does not like it and categorizes it as "boring". It has wonderful performances by all of the actors and the music is beautiful. I love "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", that scene makes me cry. Excellent movie for any age.
Perfect beginning for discussions on war and non-violence
Movies, especially recent releases, are sensory overload for my daughter and this was an absolutely perfect experience for her. Not to say that there weren't tears and/or emotional bits for her - when Maria leaves and the end when she is unsure if they will get away.
There are a few things within the movie that warrant conversation after:
1) being from a non-christian home there was quite a bit of discussion of convents/nuns.
2) war and non-violence
I think it was a perfect vehicle for discussing war with younger children because the characters she grew to love were ones that were against the war and choosing non-voilence (taking gun from the young boy even). Not a single shot or act of violence (not even comedic) throughout the ENTIRE movie which gets it a big thumps up from our family.
It was an assingment that I had to watch for class, but I have watched it before and I can say, this is BORING! I don't learn anything from it, except that there was a crazy singing family. I know there is supposed to be an educational value in this movie related to the Nazis time period, but it is so boring to even learn about that interesting stuff in this musical... I didn't like it at all. I think I was falling asleep! Not think... know.
I was suprised that this was rated for 5+. My son began to love this at age 2.
the music is brilliant and he loved seeign the child actors. the scenes toward the
end when the family is being pursued at the convent are really the only ones
requiring the fast-forward.
This is the most AWESOME movie EVER!!!! The music is wonderful, and it has a historic background and some funny moments. Julie Andrews is brilliant, as usual, and Rogers and Hammerstein had the best score EVER!!!! I can say that because I am a musician... I can appreciate it in its full potential. This is one of my absolute FAVORITE movies, along with Singin' in the Rain, Chariots of Fire, The Music Man, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail, and others. This is my absolute FAVORITE movie, however. (I just contradicted myself, didn't I? Oh well...) The music is fabulous... I am listening to the soundtrack right now. A must see for any one of any age, though for younger children, the cirstumstances/history might need to be explained in further detail.
Oh, dear. What to say about this film that hasn't been said before? It's wonderfully pure and lovable. No foul language, Maria is a model of virtue, it also teaches kids that there are other ways to get attention, and misbehaving is not a solution. The music is wonderful, but it is a little long for younger kids, so you might wanna take a break between acts for them to rest.
I love this movie, it has always been a family favorite. we would watch it each year as we were packing to visit family for Christmas. i think that every family should watch this together at least once, its a classic!
I watched this movie with my 3yo and 5yo. It is an extremely LONG movie and neither made it through-which means they didn't see the scary part! The 3yo couldn't really attend to the movie and was bouncing around the living room the whole time. My 5 yo got the story line. But...they are both singing the songs constantly now-listening to the sound track before bed, etc...Its really wonderful!
Perfect even for young children as they concentrate on the music.
We've been watching this in my family since my daughter was 3. The "war" theme in it isn't very scary, my kids asked questions about it which lead to me explaining a bit about WW2 in child friendly simplistic terms. The music is amazing....this movie is long, but even at 3 my daughter had no problem siting through it because it is so fabulous.
