an ok movie with some suggestive content

there is some suggestive content in this movie like: brief non realistic cartoon nudity, patric has a crush on a mermaid and shows it with his words and the exspretions on his face, very very brief language, and lots of peril and vilonce.

Fine for Teens, but not for tweens

Before I saw this movie, I had never seen an episode of Spongebob.Of course I had heard about it, but my kids never really expressed an interest. On day I was shopping for a fun movie for the family, and I decided we'd try out this movie. Sure the cover looked innocent enough, but the content was the exact opposite. The first problem was when Spongebob's pants fell off, reveling his naked bottom. I covered my 8yr old's eyes when that happened. My 6yr old, thank the lord in heaven, was not present, because the movie was PG. After that, I continued to watch the movie with my 10yr old daughter, and sent my 8yr old upstairs. Just when I thought everything was going fine, Patrick, the pink starfish, shows up on the screen naked, with a flag between is butt cheeks that read "Spongebob." I was shocked, thinking "how could they let that pass in a PG rated movie?!" I continued to watch the movie by myself, just to see what kind of content they put into the rest of the movie. I was appalled. Spongebob goes to a "nut bar" which clearly symbolizes a real bar, and they get drunk on ice cream, which is symbolizing alcohol. They rest of the movie was very violent, and I was really shocked. Unless you have older kids, stay away from this movie.

From a mom who actually likes Spongebob...

But hear me out! I think a lot of the negative perception of Spongebob is because people haven't really watched the show. And in my opinion, as the TV show goes, so goes this movie. It's like a very long episode. I agree that there are negative characters on the show, notably lick-penny boss Mr. Krabs and morale-draining co-worker Squidward. But Spongebob himself is a ray of sunshine. He is unrelentingly upbeat (except for the getting drunk on ice cream scene herein, which most kids will not get). He is a champion of positive attitude and cooperation. Granted, Taxi Driver, it ain't. It's not even Finding Nemo. But it is harmless fun. The specifics that people seem to be objecting to are not so different than the jokes for adults that are always thrown in to better kids movies (so we don't claw out our own eyes.) 8-) Lighten up.

Wow, this is like overprotective central isn't it?

I guess my problem with some of the people on this page is this: HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU FIND SPONGEBOB INAPPROPRIATE? If you don't let your kids watch spongebob, then you better not let them watch Blue's Clues, cause they are about the same. And will everyone please stop with this "Negative Behavior" stuff?? Its getting on my nerves. What you are doing right now is negative behavior. Just do your kids a favor and actually let them live a life. Seriously, when they get to middle school and everyone hears about how they arent allowed to watch spongebob, they will get made fun of and probably even beat up.

    For slightly older kids

There's enough fighting and scary moments in this movie that I think 6 is too young. Particularly a bar scene where beating each other up is the norm. The spongebob being drunk scene might also be a bit much for younger kids. In terms of quality, the TV show is better - more offbeat. The movie seems more formulaic and less off the wall, the jokes and humor more conventional and predictable.

it's not bad, its just silly stuff!

Spongebob is completely appropriate in my house. It really isn't bad, it's just plain silly! Silly stuff never hurt kids at all. It broke my daughter's heart to see so many parents denying Spongebob for being silly ( okay, maybe it's a little bad to call someone a boob) I'm not trying to say that the people who don't like their kids watching Spongebob are too protective or anything but, I think that some people need to WATCH Spongebob once in a while.

    Painful

If you had a choice between taking your kids to this movie or a swift kick in the crotch, choose the latter. This movie was absolutely horrible. I actually felt dumber when I left the theater. I feel guilty about taking my kids to see this garbage.

    No way!

I don't understand parents letting young children watch this character at all. He has a major attitude problem, is mouthy, and is everything we don't want our children to be. And he's made out to be the hero!

    Almost Fell Asleep!

I love the TV show SpongeBob SquarePants so I was looking forward to seeing the movie. I was thoroughly disappointed overall with the movie. I almost fell asleep!! It had some remotely funny parts in it but nothing like the TV show. Big disappointment for me.

    Silly but not bad

We took our three year old twins to see this. They love the TV show, but don't watch it often. They laughed out loud throughout the movie, there were some especially silly parts that they really appreciated. There was some crude humor (for example, someone at one point says "Spongeboob"), and a little peril, but it's not bad. Definitely not educational, but not too bad.

Great for kids mature enough to handle it!

Great for kids of all ages. There is a little bit of cartoon nudity, but as long as your child can handle it maturely, it should be ok. It's only a cartoon after all, guys! Sponge bob may get drunk on ice cream but it's only ice cream! It isn't saying "Hey WORLD! Lets all get drunk!" is it? Nah. The cartoon gags are what makes it funny!

Don't let the minor things bother you and focus on the big picture- it's humor for kids!

Cute and funny for young kids and older ones. I love the part when he gets drunk on ice cream, but when it came out my younger sister didn't get it, so why worry about it? They won't understand, they'll just think he hate too much and got a tummyache or something, and I'm pretty sure that's what the writers were thinking as they created this movie. It's a cool message because SpongeBob can do anything he sets his mind to, even when people strongly doubted him. Watch it!

Perfect laugh out loud comedy for the whole family!

This movie is great for any age! I love the movie and i love the show! My 5 year old sister is obsessed! It's so stupid it's funny! Sure Patrick does come in with a flag in his butt cheeks, but it's a good goofy movie and it's not meant to be taken seriously. I personally think that there are no flaws at all in the movie or the show.

Very funny, stupid movie, not meant to be taken seriously

Most teens of the MySpace generation grew up on SpongeBob. I still watch it now and then, and I thought the movie was hysterical and ranks up there in my top animated movies. My supervisors absolutely hated it though, let that be a warning to parents.

Good Movie with Some Iffy Stuffs

The movie is very similar to the show, but has a little bit more violence. Characters get smacked around quite a bit, Plankton gets stepped on multiple times (each one including a bloodcurdling scream), Plankton cracks a whip in a slave yard, piles of skeletons are seen over a pathway, and a hitman has a sign on the bottom of his boot labeled "Your Head Here". Sexual content includes Patrick being enamored with Mindy, calling her hot and at one point asking if she wants to see his underwear (it is played very quickly) and one quick shot of Patrick briefly having breasts. Language is mostly stuff like "idiot," "moron," and "stupid," and Mr. Krabs MIGHT have whispered "jack---" to Sponge. Overall, I think it's a great movie, but it's good to say parental warnings are pasted all over the film.

I laughed so hard during this film, but of course I'm a Spongebob Squarepants fan

For the sexual content, it's very mild. Patrick says the mermaid is "hot" and in the next scene you see him drooling over her appearance. In one scene Patrick is naked. You only see his buttocks and a flag between his buttocks. The scene only lasts for about ten seconds. In the next scene Patrick says, "Was it my butt?". In another scene Patrick asks the mermaid if she wants to see his buttocks. Spongebob and Patrick are seen wearing Goofy Goober underpants. For violence there is some, but very mild. In a scene we see a guy underwater that takes a sponge and a star fish. He places them on a table under a lamp where they slowly burn. Other creatures are seen, that were killed and has "googily eyes" glued onto them. Animated creatures attack a man, but it's not graphic and off-screen. A king freezes a man using his pitchfork. The king yells when he can't find his crown. Spongebob and Patrick go to shell city and we see several different monsters, but the monsters are so attracted to Patrick and Spongebob doing a special move they don't bother them. For profanity, it's minimal and very mild. Name-calling such as idiot, goof ball, dork, and barnacle head. For drug content, Spongebob supposedly gets "drunk" off ice cream.

new spongebob adventure does not meet expectations.

commercialism is very high in this film, and there is signs in it that spongebob and patrick are homosexuals, also the sponge and the starfish take nothing seriously and respond to everything by being idiots, even more so with patrick, there is little respect for authority either, but in the end sponge and starfish learn valuable life lesson in being more adult-like and you can do anything if you keep trying.
