My kids have watched this movie four times in two days. Lots of action and adventure, but not violent. The positive message about Family is much appreciated.
SPY KIDS is a great kids' spy movie. It contains the wierd-ish sort of plot that comes from James Bond, and plenty of harmless but engrossing action. There is mild peril. The tenseness might frighten some youngsters, especially the secret agents who are turned into strange creatures (not very scary and off-screen). One child almost swears: "oh, sh*t(pause)take mushrooms". That's it.
This film is great for young kids who want to see some action but are too young for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or some other action flicks. Older kids interested in spy stuff should check out the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz.
Highly recommended.
Very little humor in family oriented films is really funny. This movie it. The over-the-top idetities that the parents assume when they are spys rely on some over used gender cliches.
This was a fun movie for kids to see. The only negative to me was the use of "Shitake mushrooms" as a tease for kids almost swearing. I thought that was unnecessary and seemed to be way the movie makers were trying to make the movie "cooler" for kids. Not my idea of cool. The actions scenes were good and a funny story line as well.
Consider your kid carefully with this one. My ten year old, who is not a particularly fearful kid but has a very vivid imagination, was extremely disturbed by the mutant creatures in this (the idea of people being mutated in that way and used as kid show props while begging for help in distorted voices) to the point where he had a hard time going to bed afterwards. The almost-swearing didn't bother us, and I thought it was better than average in many other ways, despite a lot of corny cartoonish action and dialogue. The kids were enthralled by all the gadgetry, and the Incredibles-type family. Product placement is a Big Mac and fries early on (with golden arches briefly visible).
Loved this movie as a kid. It is a great family film about being yourself. Carmen says some mean things to Juni that might be a little naughty for small viewers.
