The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bond is a movie based on the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime anime series written by Fuse. The movie centers around the conspiracy over a mysterious power wielded by a small country's queen. Expect to see fantasy violence and battles (blood and gore, use of weapons, dead bodies, and dismemberment). Lots of blood is shown spraying from wounds, but most gore is censored behind shadows. There's partial nudity throughout: One scene shows a naked girl walking out of a pool, with her backside briefly shown. A young girl wears an outfit that consists of black panties and a long-sleeved shirt that only covers her chest, and another female character wears a revealing top that shows lots of cleavage. Language includes "idiot," "damn," "piss," and "ass." Characters drink/get drunk at a party; one character mentions that another is getting "sloshed" and shouldn't drink so much. Although the movie focuses primarily on action, there are some positive role models and messages centered around family, friendship, sacrifice, and helping others.

Is It Any Good?
This fantasy adventure film is going to be best for fans of the original anime series; others may be left confused by references to events from the series. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bond is a movie dedicated to the fans who'll watch for the interactions between familiar characters. Almost everyone from season two of the anime series makes an appearance and has a moment to shine. The art and animation are fluid and beautiful. The action sequences are bloody and exciting, especially the epic opening scene, and the well-choreographed fight sequences are among the movie's strongest points.
The movie's flaws have to do more with the story, which progresses too quickly and becomes predictable. It's obvious who's the villain of the story as soon as they're introduced. Characters make decisions that don't make sense just to progress the plot; one character illogically falls for the villain's plan, just because that's what the story requires. The stakes never seem that high when the heroes easily deal with everything thrown at them. The film's ending also cheapens any sacrifices and feels unsatisfying because you just end up not caring about the weak villains and contrived situations. Happily, there are some positive messages about friendship, sacrifice, and helping others, and it's nice to see a strong queen do whatever it takes to protect her people and closest friends.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk the theme of sacrifice. What is something you have sacrificed in your life? What did the sacrifice mean for you?
Talk about trying to resolve conflicts peacefully. Is it ever OK to use violence to protect yourself or others?
