I Can’t Believe this is rated PG!
We were looking forward to watching this with our 8 year old, 10 yr old, 12 yr old and 14 yr old but now i remember why I couldn’t remember anything from this movie from when I watched it as a kid— my parents probably didn’t let me watch the whole thing and I didn’t let my kids watch the whole thing either. The hanging dead body should have been my first clue. We turned it off when the “scary thing was chained up and being tortured”. We should have turned it off at the “sexual torture devices” part but I thought it’d get better. It didn’t.

unforgettable fun
sure, there's some stuff inappropriate for kids by today's standards but it's a classic; still enjoyed by kids of all ages. Parent's won't be bored.
the positives outweigh the negatives here. it's worth it.
TIP: distract the little ones for 5 minutes when Chunk goes into the Fennellis "restaurant" otherwise that part (although hysterical) could be scary.

If the Fratellis restaurant, a nude statue, a super hero monster pirate named sloth, and some minor cussing is too much for your child, I'm sorry you were born at the wrong time, we had bigger worries then a movie
Growing up in middle America where the corn fields are often mistaken for a never ending ocean, my siblings and I often watched The Goonies and went on treasure hunts to find the Gold. I have watched this movie no less then 100 times as I've owned a copy ever since the movie was shown on Sunday night on one of four channels from taping it. Loved it soo much we had to move to Oregon and I visit the sites of the movie regularly. My son who is now 18 also loves the movie and has watched it since birth. If this movie is scary, or the language and off the cuff sexual references are too bad for a kid in today's world, then we have failed the next generation, shame, shame, I know your name

Great for The family
This is one of the best movies of all time. Yes as a kid in the 80’s I may have not been just thrown the S word around with my friend, but we would act and carry on like these kids do as a group. Were my parents bad parents for let me watch The Goonies at the age of 11 no, because I knew the difference between right and wrong. I knew what good language was and what bad languages is. This is a great comedy for the whole family. “ The only thing we serve is tough” ( Mama Fratelli)

My son was shocked
My son was shocked with the level of criminality and hatred behaviour that there is. The monster's erratic beahviour was inexplanable to him and couldn't sleep at night.

Unexpectedly mature
I had to turn this off after 20 minutes. There was a lot of swearing, calling each other mean names (dummy, etc.), a reference to sexual torture, and then someone chained up in a basement apparently being tortured.

My kids were fine with this movie at a young age.

I think what others are showing us is…
If your child is old enough to sit still and enjoy it, not be scared, but young enough to not understand the swear words and innuendos etc, it’s fine, it’s good!
If they are not old enough to watch anything, and are somewhere in the middle to understand and question some of the eeek stuff (words, references, scenes), maybe give it a couple years. You know your own kids basically. Most of the parents on here prob watched it at the wrong age? Are we ok?
