Prepare your heart for revival of tradition within meaningful layers in the charming fantasy-splashed Pixar movie that will eventually take the viewer to the skies. Childhood love is rooted between a young girl’s (Ellie) dream of going to South America and living atop a mountain and a more quiet boy (Carl) who is preoccupied with helium-operated balloons. This animation succinctly shows the two children growing up together , experiencing all the phases of life- from school years, dating, then to their own wedding, and eventually growing old together within a childless marriage. Throughout their lives, they try to save money for the trip to South America, but various needs cause them to have to borrow from the glass bank preventing them from ever fulfilling the aspiration together. Though much of the basic story seems predictable, the many unlived dreams feather into surprising outcomes when the man loses his beloved wife. Building companies threaten him to vacate the home that was designed and built by the couple in which they lived in for their entire lives together. Rather than take residence in a nursing facility or have the house destroyed, stubborn ingenuity steps in as he uses his talents and wit to remove his home from the lot. Within the planning, he is interrupted by an annoying boy scout (Russel) who wants to involve him in acquiring a new badge for his vest only to be sent on a wild goose chase to get rid of him. But as it is, when his miraculous plan to lift the home from the ground, the boy is found on the porch and they must make the trip together. A more surreal experience ensues once they have been lifted from the earth and end up near the area of landing involving hundreds of robotic dogs, a peculiar bird, and the old man’s obsession to retain his property. Harrowing events are found as both are challenged by a mad man who tries to control and kill them. There are many heart-wrenching moments as he keeps returning to the adventure/ photo album containing his late wife's illustration of a home upon Paradise Falls, feeling sorry that he couldn’t fulfill Ellie's life-long wish but through this manic event, he and the little boy adopt a new adventure that puts closure to the old one leaving a bonus surprise at the very end of the movie.

Beautifully done movie
A beautifully done movie. Just wish there were more movies like this for adults and kids alike. The script was well-written. Very moving yet done in a way that children can understand, too,

A movie that neither kids nor adults will enjoy
We watched with our 4 year old daughter. We had to fast forward through 85% of the film as there were so many scary chase and adult issue scenes (wife dies, getting kicked out of his home, depression, greed, death). I also thought that the movie missed any mark on what audience it was for. Too adult and scary for kids, too simple (nothing clever about it) for adults. Watch something else like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Perfect for all ages including those adults who are kids at heart!!
I saw this at the movie theater with my then 12, 8 and 5 year old boys. We all loved this movie. I would recommend it for anybody with children. GREAT movie.

I watched this with my 10 and 11 year old. We all loved this movie. It was hilarious in places and deeply touching in others. I especially enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Carl and Russell. As a parent, I also enjoyed that although the animals were given personality (and the dog even had the ability to talk), they weren't overly humanized. Finally, I would recommend this film to anyone with children.

Good for 8yrs and up. Too scarey for sensitive 4-5 yr olds
More violent than it needs to be. Plot is hard to follow for younger kids.

Fun for All Ages
Loved this movie. It has a lesson for every generation and was not pushing an "agenda" of any kind. My 70 year old Dad loved it as did my 5 year-old son. It entertains kids while reminding adults some valuabe lessons of life. Great movie. I don't really see why this is PG compared to what else out there that is given that rating. I wouldn't let that scare you away. I also wouldn't let my 5 year old see other PG movies.

beautiful movie with novel characters and storyline, not for sensitive children or parents!
i put 5 but if your child is particularily sensitive than parent may want to preview. the montage to which many reviewers refer does include some adult themes which is probably why it is silent. you can answer the questions however you like. i thought the movie was beautiful possibly one of pixar's best. and even with all the fantasy it was one the most realistic of animated movies i've seen. my 3 yo loved it but she likes scarier movies. oh, and to all the reviewers that complain about death in the movie, how many disney movies start with the death of a parent? how's that for creepy.

I didn't like the sadness in the movie and dreams not fulfilled. The part with the dogs attacking the bird might be scary to some children. My kids loved the movie even with the sadness. The imagination of the movie was great. I don't think death is something that kids need to deal with in a movie. Parents should be the ones to address that issue. Younger children may not understand some of the parts.

Not just a fun romp in the forest - totally different movie from the previews
Terrified my 5 year old. Kids movies should not have characters saying lines like 'I never thought I'd meet my hero... I can't believe he's trying to kill me' (paraphrasing). Snarling dogs, kids falling out of flying objects; half the movie is a character's attempt to capture and then kill and stuff a rare, cute personable bird. We went expecting a story of friendship bridging generations, but instead got vicious dogs, friends uniting as they run for their lives, dogs dying, characters getting hurt, attempted extermination.....

Magnificent! A Wonderful Animated Accomplishment!
This is a spectacular film; very fun and funny. I enjoyed it highly, and I'm almost 18! This has some great messages about friendship abnd loyalty (never leaving a friend behind). Parents: Although practically harmless, there is a sad, off-screen death in the beginning and some intense peril. Otherwise, please enjoy this excellent and beautiful film. Recommended for all ages who can comprehend the television! A favorite of even my 1 year old! Nothing iffy about this movie! Watch it! There are some mean dogs in one part, but my kids were unphased.

Too complicated for under 8s and rather sad
I took my 4 year old to see this film and while essentially he had an OK time he really didn't understand much of the VERY complicated plot. The film is beautifully made but VERY sad (eg. couple who love each other dearly cannot have children, elderly man yearns for dead wife) and quite scary in the scenes with the dogs. It is not a film that makes children laugh (and infact made me cry quite a bit) and the plot is just so elaborate that I doubt many under 8s will really understand who is who and what is happening. I would not recommend this to anyone looking for a fun trip to the cinema with an under 8.

Pixar's best yet!
I'm a huge Pixar fan and they outdid themselves with this movie. If you are planning on watching this with young children you should know that it deals with the issue of death. It also contains some scenes that may be too intense for young viewers.

Easily can help to instill good values in to your children
Younger boys may not appreciate the slower-style of this movie. My 5-year old asked twice to leave the movie, even with the 3D glasses on. The movie is very good, and can help to teach your kids about the value of life, the value of wisdom, the value of trying new things, and the value of continuous learning even when you get old.

The movie is not suitable for children under 10 , it's not exactly a fairy tale that will make children dream, rather a disturbing action movie, with scene of fighting, talking dogs belonging to a twisted scientist and some scene of violence . where are the nice fairy tale movies like the one that we used to watch gone?

Zero stars
My whole family hated this one. It was a movie about a miserable old man who spreads his agony around without regard for how his attitude impacts others around him. He meets another old man misled by life who's even more miserable than he is. I thought the montage of his life in the beginning was very moving for adults and completely inappropropriate for kids because it was too heavy. I don't think kids are ready for impressions of barren women and funeral homes when they see a DISNEY movie. When the little boy is yelled at and told to go away, my daughter had just had it. It made her no longer like the protagonist and I can't say I felt much differently. If this were an adult indie movie, I would give it a different review, but it's Pixar so I can't give it a good rec.

Heavy themes for bright & sensitive children
Heavy topics of loss (death of beloved life-long spouse) whilst piano music played. My compassionate 8 yr old cried. She was also very bothered by the violence. At one point it was too much all at once--bird is trapped, dogs going nuts after bird, good dog is hurt, and finally...the old man's beloved house is about to be torched. Daughter wanted to leave. Too heavy of a movie for more sensitive kids. If your kids are older or less sensitive, or too young to get it, then maybe it's ok. But even so, the intensity of the peril scenes is something most parents should be aware of esp. w/ younger kids. Was a very odd animated movie experience for us. I wouldn't see it again.

Too Death focused for little kids
The previews and trailers didn't show just how much emphasis the movie had on death. My son had just lost his Grandpa before seeing this, and seeing Ellie die, and then the injury to the bird as the dogs hunted them was pretty bad. Seeing the bad guy fall from the blimp- it was pretty clear he dies too. Too much death for a kids movie. It made him sad, and cry, and then ask a lot of questions about good guys and bad guys once they're dead.

one of the greatest animated films of all time!
UP is easily one of pixar's greatest films. The film's opening scene is moving the dog is funny and though you will definitely take away positive messages from this film, they are more subtle than other family films. It is worth noting that aside from a nosebleed in "Finding Nemo" this is the first time blood is seen in a pixar film (Carl hits someone with his cane). The opening montage of carl's life can get depressing towards the end. The villan plunging to his death can be a little disturbing for young kids but is rather tame compared to other animated films (Tarzan and the little mermaid to name two). This is a film that anyone can enjoy. A must-see for any family!

This movie looked awful because of poor advertising and my previous disappointment with WALL.E. However, it was great! My only concern is the death related themes, these may disturb some younger kids. A 5 year old was sitting next to me who kept asking where his (Carl's) wife had gone.

This movie is one of the best animated films of the year so far. It is also one of Pixar's best films since Ratatouille. In this movie there are some frightening scenes that children 7 and under may think are scary. I gave this film about a 3-3 1/2 stars (out of four stars.)

Good movie, might be upsetting
I really enjoyed this movie! It was a little sad at the beggining of the movie were Mr. Fredrickson's wife died and when they found out that Ellie could not have children. I was also a little upset when Russel confessed his issues with his family. Overall, it was a great movie that everyone can enjoy even though it might be upseting.

An Instant Classic
Pixar's best. However, the story is sad and may upset little kids. There are some adult themes (death, infertility, loneliness...) but there is plenty of humor and adventure, too. Main characters are frequently in peril, but the movie is fun and colorful at that point. A great experience.

A Fantastic Film for All Ages!
I absolutely adored this movie! And this is coming froma thirteen-year-old who chose to go see this movie for her birthday. This story embodies themes like friendship, lonlieness, and fulfilling your dreams. Some may be concerned by the under-lying adult themes like dealing with grief and the implied miscarriage, but I thought they just added to the film! My Mom got a little choked up during the miscarriage scene but that seemed like an okay reaction for my mother, who's had 2 miscarriages herself. It didn't seem to heavy for my little sister, who's 6. She seemed to love it, so I believe overall the film deals with lots of mature themes by making accessible for family conversations and understanding.
