Why We Rated This on for Ages 5 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Lead characters WALL-E and EVE are extremely sympathetic. They're sweet, conscientious, loyal truth-seekers who are able to transcend technology and develop the capacity for love. EVE is dismissive of WALL-E at first, but she comes to appreciate his dedication. The human characters are a bit more flawed; they got into their predicament because of their own bad habits (particularly laziness, selfishness, and greed) -- which the movie is clearly taking a stand against. But in the end -- thanks in no small part to WALL-E -- they come around and appear to have the best intentions of making things right. Underlying the whole movie are messages about the dangers of over consumption and excessive waste; the vision of Earth as a garbage-strewn wasteland (and humans as hoverchair-bound lumps who can barely walk) speaks volumes.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

A human does battle against a robot, which pokes him in the eye and tosses him around, but it's not too aggressive. Robot EVE has a powerful gun in one of her arms, which she doesn't hesitate to fire at possible threats (including, early on, WALL-E). At one point, in frustration, she sets off a series of vivid explosions in old oil tankers that could scare some very little kids. A gang of rogue robots faces off against similarly mechanical peacekeepers; their conflict is more funny than scary. Human characters are briefly in peril.
  • Sexy stuff:

Gentle, sweet, understated romance blooms for two robots, as well as for a human couple.
  • Language:

One use of the word "heck."
  • Consumerism:

Excessive consumerism is one of the movie's themes. It's personified by the Buy N Large mega-corporation, which seems to own and operate everything in WALL-E's world. It's fictional, but its brand is everywhere. There's also a big plug for Hello, Dolly!.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About WALL-E

Parents need to know that although this winning Pixar adventure is thoroughly charming and, yes, romantic, the youngest viewers may get a little restless during the atmospheric, virtually dialogue-free first half-hour. They'll still enjoy it, but -- unlike older kids and grown-ups -- they won't be that impressed by how much is said with so few words. But the action (which includes some robot fights, weapons being fired, explosions, and chase scenes) picks up soon enough. Underlying the whole thing are strong environmental messages: Reduce, reuse, recycle, and think about what you're doing to the planet (and yourself).

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the movie's messages. What is it saying about the media's effect on people? Do you think the future humans in the movie were exaggerated to be funny, or could that really happen? Are they happy? What are they missing? Also, why is WALL-E so fascinated by Hello, Dolly? What does he learn from the movie? Why is he so eager to make a connection with EVE? How does he win her over? How is this movie different from other animated features, even previous Pixar films?

Got kids of a minimum age of 4? Buy Wall-E!

So cute! I wouldn't recommend it for young children, it might scare them in the fact of Earth being the way they show it, but it might improve their skills of keeping the Earth clean, hey! The youngest of mine that enjoyed it was 6, oldest 9, but the only reason my 3 year old wasn't interested was because she's too young for a movie theatre.

    cute show!

I like it, but it was not my favorite. I think that it is more geared toward the younger kids. but it was still a really cute show!

    Perfect. Period.

This is one of the best movies I've seen. The music was spectacular. The animation was visually stunning. The morals are outstanding. It is truly about love - for others, for yourself and for your world. It is also very clever. After seeing it many times, I have to say I like the beginning the best before WallE leaves earth. One note us that there are a couple times when my daughter cried, though she doesn't anymore. It's when WallE gets hurt or could be dead. Waterworks!!!

Beautiful movie fine for small kids despite explosions (IMHO)

Great movie for all ages over 2 (maybe). Lots of explosions and shooting, but not in an intentionally hurtful way. Beautiful movie to watch. Our 2-yr old daughter was entranced for the 20-minute opening, despite no dialogue! Positive eco/green/conservation message.

I was really disappointed with this one. I was so hyped up about it, and then they blew it all away. The human part was really a drag. Don't get me wrong, a great movie. Just not as good as some other pixar stuff. Moral are difficult to understand as well.

Funny, cute, but the message might be hard for younger kids to understand.

Great for all ages, but be prepared for some minro scary and sad parts for younger children

I think that kids in kindergarten and up would probably get the verall message of the movie: Recycle, Stop Polluting, Our nation is mostly overweight, and even robots have lovey-dovey stuff. But 2nd graders and uder may need some comfort aat the less than fun parts (I.E. Eve fires her gun, walle shatters glass, and the cockroach getting run over multiple times). You should also be prepared to cry (adults AND kids) when, at some point, Wall-e loses his personality or when e takes heavy damage. But despite the fact this movie is somewhat sad and impending doom occurs at certain scenes, anyone over the age of 6 or 7 should DEFINITELY see this movie.

Sorta Intense, But Appropriate For All Ages!

Although I don't think that many 2-year-olds would grasp the whole "Earth is dead, everything is trash, only a robot that wasn't turned off can save it" concept, it's a good movie. I give it five-stars for animation and it deserved the Academy Award it received! All I can say is keep on surprising me, Pixar!

Great family movie for 3 + up, parents will enjoy!

I had heard some negative buzz about Wall-E, and though my two boys love robots, our library copy was never available. Finally their uncles bought them a copy and it's beautiful. The messages about wastefulness and sloth are right on with our family values, and Wall-E is a devoted, sweet robot who just wants to help his friend Eve. There's a small part of the movie with a battle between the robots, but it's not at all scary, and I'm very sensitive to scariness (we rarely watch Disney movies because of that). I'd highly recommend you see it - perfect for a family movie night.

    My 4-year-old's favorite movie

This is my 4-year-old's favorite movie. Yes, there is some 'romance' between the two robots, but it is so innocent it is not an issue. It has great messages about consumerism and our destruction of the planet, and is truly inspirational.

I don't wanna delve too deep because I'm not that passionate about this movie. I believe "Kung-Fu Panda" should've won the Best Animated Film.

    Love This Movie!

This a great movie! I consider myself on the conservative side with regard to what I will allow my children to watch, and this movie is excellent. It does have some explosions and one of the robots has a lazer that comes out of her arm and blows things up. BUT, she never blows up a person or living thing. My girls and I talk about how you shouldn't just act out and "explode" when you're mad or frustrated because that can be destructive. We talk about better ways of handling those feelings. I have seen the movie 5 times and cannot figure out where the word "heck" is. There is very little dialogue throughout the movie, but the action is so great that it does not matter. I think very young children may be scared by the explosions but may not, it just depends on your child. Even my 20 month old will sit through the first 40 minutes or so completely mezmerized!
