Back II Da Basics (by Ginuwine, R&B)

common sense media says

Ginuwine goes for a more mature sound.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there are some sexy sound effects on "When We Make Love," the album's most obvious example of lover-boy posturing.

Positive messages: Ginuwine is maturing, and so are his relationships -- at least in these songs.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: A lot of heavy breathing and innuendo, nothing actually explicit.
Language: Nothing offensive.
Consumerism: No obvious product placement.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: A cocktail here and there.

What's the story?

What's the story?
Ginuwine's fifth album, BACK II DA BASICS, features a selection of sexy ballads with an occasional hip-hop or reggae-tinged tune thrown in. The artist seems to be in the middle of a transition from posturing hottie to romantic balladeer; and like most coming-of-age adventures, this one is not altogether smooth. The well-produced tracks supporting Ginuwine's silky, sexy vocals seem designed to prove that this lover-boy is finally growing up. There's a lot of sexual innuendo, and "When We Make Love" features a rather adult chorus of heavy-breathing sound effects -- but most of the content is more romantically seductive.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

As always, Ginuwine nails the vocals with his signature grit-on-velvet sound. But the absence of production mainstay Timbaland is noticeable, and though the songs are well performed, there is nothing about them that is particularly exciting. The whole project lacks the kind of visceral energy that can make the difference between good and great.
