Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Song "Breakout" has some teen-typical lyrics about school: "stuck in school so lame/my parents say that I'm lazy/gettin' up at eight is crazy/tired of being told what to do...we're gonna have some fun/gonna lose control/feels so good to let go, oh." She sings about a break-up with a bit of anger as she describes some things she hates about a guy. She also talks about what she likes about him. "Wake Up America" gives positive message to tweens to do their part: "We're all in this together/It's a home so let's take care of it...Everything you do matters in some way." Bonus track's lyrics might be a bit possessive: "I'm gonna get you no matter what they say/I always get my way...I'm never gonna quit it."

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

"And when we kiss, I'm hypnotized," "When we're intertwined, everything's alright," and "I remember when we kissed/I still feel it on my lips."
  • Language:

The worst it gets is "seven things I hate about you."
  • Consumerism:

    A mention of Levi's.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Breakout was written by Jessica Dawson

Parents need to know that Miley's sound and lyrics are a teensy, tiny bit more mature than the pure pop of Hannah Montana alter ego. She does talk about kissing and declares "school is lame" and "we're gonna have some fun/gonna lose control," but everything about this album stays fine for her tween fans.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about the lyrics in "Simple Song." Do you think Miley is talking about herself, and the frenzy that constantly surrounds her life as a teen celeb? Do you think the media is always fair in the way it portrays her? Do you think celebrities should just put up with the paparazzi because that's the life they chose, or should there be boundaries?

More on Breakout

What’s the Story?

BREAKOUT is the second studio album for tween sensation and Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus and the first without the "Hannah" namesake in the shadows. Breakout's mix of rock, pop, techno-pop, and a little bit country will easily please Miley fans, and shows she can stand on her own without the blond wig.

Is It Any Good?

Considering Miley Cyrus has already had more success in her short career than most artists will ever attain, it's easy to forget that the singer/actress/Billy Ray offspring is only 15. On Breakout, Miley sheds a little bit of her pop sound and rocks out like a typical teen, while proving she's more than just Hannah's alter ego.

It's quite an eclectic mix: "7 Things," "Full Circle," "Breakout," and "Wake Up America" have rock riffs and spunky lyrics, and "The Driveway" offers a hint of country that's a natural fit for Miley's voice. "Fly on the Wall" is a bit edgier sounding with funky synth-beats and a cheerleader-like chant on the chorus. The cover of Cyndi Lauper's hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is a slightly flat attempt on a beloved classic, but Miley fans might like it; the vocals are a bit pushed at other times and reveal an as-yet developing voice. But regardless, tweens won't care as Miley struts her stuff -- sans Disney -- with spunk and variety that'll have them singing along in their bubble gum-colored rooms.

    Music not good, too rebellious!

Well, my review for this is a little late. Now Miley Cyrus has already come out with the racy new Can't Be Tamed video. So if you're a parent and thinking about buying your kids Miley Cyrus cds, I'd say "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!" Miley Cyrus has become a horrible role model. This cd is sort of the turning point in her music where she starts to become more rebellious, for example lyrics like "stuck in school so lame" School is good for you kids, stay in school! Thanks a lot Miley. >:(

Sure, it talks about love and stuff, but no strong language or the s-word (sorry I don't like that word). I think it's fine for most kids 8 and up. The messages are postitive, it's just a fun peppy album mostly.

    NOT FOR KIDS!!!!!!! ADULT ALBUM!!!!!!!

Miley Cyrus is a stripper (she pole-danced and walked in the Vanity Fair with no clothing on the top part of her body). In this album, she uses extremely strong language, and kids don't need to know all that language. This should have a "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" sticker on it, but since she acts in "Hannah Montana', a kids' show, the RIAA decided not to include one. NOT FOR KIDS!!!!!!! ADULT ALBUM!!!!!!!

    best miley cd ever

I had been waiting for a couple months for this cd. so i bought the day it came out. i'm a huge miley fan, so my expectations were high for this album based on some of the older miley/hannah songs. i was in no way disapointed. i absolutely love this album! Miley is breaking out on this album without hannah montana on this cd, yet it is still appropriate for miley's younger fans. but i think that teens will still like this cd because it talks about stuff that teens go through, like a break up or wanting to hang out with your friends and dance. it has a lot of upbeat dance tunes like fly on the wall and breakout. but it has a few rock songs as well as some slower songs too. so far this is my favorite album of 2008. people should definately buy this cd because you wont be disapointed. i know i wasnt! Fave songs: bottom of the ocean, 7 things, and fly on the wall.

    Another Awesome Miley Album!

Miley is amazing, and so is this album. As soon as I woke up on July 22, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: wish Selena Gomez a happy 16 Birthday and buy this CD. But I had to wait until yesterday. From yesterday to now, I have been listening to it like crazy! In the car, on iTunes, and on my iPod. This is truly my favorite album in the world!!

    Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

This is a great CD. My 9 year old daughter bought it with her own $$ and she was so excited. When I got home yesterday we sat on her bed together and listened. It was great to hear such a phenomenal version of the Cindy Lauper classic. The other songs are fun and less "bubble gum" than the Hannah Montana music. As an adult I like the rock side of Miley and wish her a long career.
