In her second album, BUZZ BUZZ, Laurie Berkner enlarges her repertoire of original songs inspired by movement activities and the children in her life. A few traditional songs are thrown into the mix, making a 49-minute CD that serves up nothing objectionable, but doesn't add much substance or artistry to children's music.
Many of the songs sound improvised. According to liner notes, the inspiration for "Clean It Up" came from a mother's request. But lyrics such as "Clean it up, clean it up, You can make it fun to do" are unlikely to inspire kids to clean up a mess. "The Cookie Bakers of the Night" originated with students and gets off to an interesting start with rhythm guitar, but needs better crafting to make it memorable as song.
The arrangements use simple instrumentation. A few add musical variety. "I've Been Workin' on the Railroad" is a peppy version of a classic with a walking bass line, piano, banjo, and kazoo. "Telephone" is a refreshing a cappella vocalist call and response "Hello (hello) Is anybody there (is anybody there)." The songs about dancing, food, magic, animals, friendship, and choo choos offer safe but musically unsophisticated fare for preschoolers.
