A one-woman entertainment industry, Hilary Duff already has a successful career as a movie and TV actress, and seems intent on establishing herself as a music artist of substance and maturity. Whether she has singing talent is awfully hard to tell on HILARY DUFF, her self-titled album. It is so heavily overproduced that it's impossible to know where the sweet little-girl voice ends and digital processing begins. On song after song, impassioned pleas for this or that are buried deep in the mix. And when you do catch the lyrics, they are so obvious that they border on inane. "I'm an angel/I'm a devil/I'm somewhere in between...sometimes I am a million colors/sometimes I am black and white..." she warbles on "I Am."
Is it any good?
The musicianship and production are adequate but uninspired; the songs are instantly forgettable. In her eagerness to leave her childish world and adorable slumber-party playfulness behind, Duff has apparently lost her sense of humor. It's too bad, because along with her image as a confused but lovable teenager, she's abandoned a lot of her kooky charm as well.
