Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that the most objectionable thing about this soundtrack is lackluster songwriting. Even if you love the movie, you can go ahead and skip this soundtrack.

Families can talk about the concept of "filler" -- there are a couple of great songs on this CD, but most are pretty lame. What songs do you like and why? What are the boring songs missing? You can also put on the CD and bring out a jump rope and try your own moves -- that might make the tunes a bit more interesting.

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Kathi Kamen Goldmark

The Disney Channel movie Jump In! tells the story of the clash between meeting family expectations and following your heart. In this case Izzy, a kid who's being groomed for a career as prize fighter, abandons this pursuit (and presumably breaks his old man's heart in the process) to join a double-dutch jump-rope team competition.

Corbin Bleu (of High School Musical fame), as Izzy, does a terrific job on "Push It to the Limit," one of the best songs on the album. Unfortunately, few of the other tracks come close in terms of either performance or songwriting, and overall the CD is a clunker, with 98% of the energy provided by two or three songs. Other highlights -- "It's My Turn Now," an empowering ditty by co-star Keke Palmer and the sassy and well-performed "Jump to the Rhythm" by Jordan Pruitt -- are fun, but not exciting or catchy enough to justify purchasing this CD.

It's not that there's anything exactly wrong with these songs. They're just derivative, unimaginative, and boring; far below Disney's usual standards. The writing is so predictable that you can make a family game out of "guess the next line's rhyme" on many of the tunes. Even most of the vocalists sound a little bored. Though the message of the film might be a terrific one, families will do best to watch the movie and skip buying the soundtrack.

Kids will be better off listening to Cheetah Girls or Raven-Symone.
