Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Several songs about teen angst and generational divide make this a good album for adolescents looking to express their changing feelings, but also can be overly dramatic. "How'd I get so jaded/is it so complicated to not give up on me," "I'm sick of all this waiting and people telling what I should be/Maybe you're the one that's wrong not me/You say we got no future, living in the past so listen up/that's my generation," and "You're stuck in the same old nightmare/He's lying/You're crying/There's nothing left to salvage/Kick the door cause this is over/Get me out of here!"
  • Violence:

Metaphorical images of violence are pretty minor: "It's like a blade that cuts right through me."
  • Sex:

"Another kiss as we're lying on the pavement" is as detailed as it gets. One of the main themes of the album is heartbreak, longing, and failed relationships. However, the songs speak in generalities and do not delve too deep. An example: "How does it feel when you kiss when you know that I trust you."
  • Language:

    One "f--k."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Simple Plan

Parents need to know that even though this album carries a "parental advisory warning" there's really nothing offensive to Simple Plan's self-titled LP besides one "f--k." Most of the songs do focus on modern teen issues of confusion, angst, and stormy relationships. However, the band is not especially angry, misogynistic, or self-destructive. The band comes off as a group of sensitive -- if not, dramatic -- guys who are just trying to get the transition from youth to adulthood right.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about generations and how different each can be. The band covers this issue on their song, "Generation." Does it seem like every new generation has trouble fitting in with the rest of society? How do current events define each generation?

    They Rock!

My 1st thought is that they don't need to be rated 12+, there's only 1 word in ''I'm Just A Kid''. And they really, REALLY rock.
