Directions: Kids! Find out how much your parents know about the Cyberspace Rules of the Road. Test their knowledge by reading them the next paragraph about Candace and quizzing them with the questions that follow.
Phineas and Ferb's older sister, Candace, goes online a LOT. She loves chatting and posting pictures of her totally awesome friends. One day, Candace secretly snaps a photo of her best friend, Rosa. Candace then edits in a photo of Rosa's crush, Biff, in the shape of a heart. And then she texts it to some friends, who text it to some friends, who text it to ... well, you know the rest!
Now test your parents' media smarts with these five questions:
1. Rosa sees the photo of her with Biff on a friend's profile page. After nearly fainting, Rosa asks the friend to take down the photo. Now that the photo is down, Rosa is sure it's gone for good. Is she right?
A) Yes
B) No
(Yes = Guess again; No = Correct -- way to go!)
Photos can live online forever, even if you take them down. People can pass them on to others, or they can live on other websites. Be careful what you put online!
2. Biff doesn't have a cell phone, so Rosa's pretty sure he he'll never see the photo. Phew! Does Rosa have anything to worry about?
A) Yes
B) No
(Yes = Correct -- how cybersmart of you!; No = Guess again)
You never know who's going to see what you post online. Even if Biff doesn't have a cell phone, his friends can show him the picture.
3. Tommy, one of Phineas and Ferb's friends, sees the photo of Rosa and Biff online. A comment on it from "froggy51" reads "BFF." What should Tommy assume?
A) Rosa and Biff are trying out for a reality show: Big, Friendly, & Fun.
B) Rosa & Biff are BFFs (best friends forever). The picture proves it.
C) None of the above.
(A = Guess again; B = Guess again; C= Correct -- way to go!;)
Remember, not everything you read online is true. We don't know who froggy51 is, or whether his or her information is correct.
4. A few days later, Rosa gets a chat invitation from a screen name she doesn't recognize. "Hey, it's Biff. Would you like to meet me at the park tomorrow after school?" Should she accept the invitation?
A) Yes – after all, her dream has come true!
B) Yes – but only after she asks whether the person is actually Biff.
C) No
(A = Guess again; B = Guess again; C = Correct -- you've got media smarts.)
Not everyone is who they say they are online. She should tell her parents, who can find out whether Biff actually sent the IM.
5. Candace sure does spend a lot of time online. What else might be a good use of her time?
A) Spending more time with her step-brothers, Phineas and Ferb.
B) Spending more time with her friends.
C) Reading for pleasure or for school.
D) All of the above.
(A = Guess again; B = Guess again; C = Guess again; D = Correct -- way to go!)
Going online is a great way to learn and have fun. But it shouldn't be the only thing that Candace does. Nothing beats spending time with family and friends. And reading for pleasure is great because you can go on a fun adventure in your mind.
