Net Safety: New Android App Helps Keep Kids Safe Online

There's no shortage of advice on how to keep your kids safe in today's Internet-fueled world. The trouble for parents is remembering the right thing at the right time. Common Sense Media has contributed to a new, free Android app that can help.

Net Safety, developed by Google and Verizon with help from leading online nonprofit safety organizations, brings expert advice to a whole new level -- your phone. With bite-sized, easy-to-read tips on everything from cyberbullying to SPAM, Net Safety delivers practical advice at intervals that you set -- daily, weekly, or three times a week -- providing a gentle nudge to talk to your kids about critical digital safety behavior.

The brainchild of the Internet Education Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes Internet-related policy, the Net Safety app includes the smartest advice from the top nonprofit safety organizations to help families stay safe online.

You'll get tips from Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, OnGuard Online, and GetNetWise on the latest issues that you and your kids are dealing with, including inappropriate content, computer and data security, mobile privacy and safety, social networking and Facebook, avoiding identify theft -- and lots more. And because it's a mobile app, the tips are updated constantly, providing you with the most timely and relevant information. You can even forward tips to your kids' phones, email them to friends, or save them to read later.

One of the best features of Net Safety is its insider advice. Did you know, for example, that background photos, license plate numbers, and street addresses caught in webcam videos can reveal your identity? Or that you should never respond to SPAM because it actually validates your email address?

If learning all of this at once is overwhelming to you, you know it's falling on deaf ears to your kids. Dispensing the tips one at a time ensures that you'll take notice -- and that your kids will listen.

Net Safety for Android phones is free. To download it, search for Net Safety tips from the Android Market on your phone. Or visit the Net Safety site and point your phone's bar code scanner at the code, and the app will automatically download.
