Twilight: Talking to Your Kids About the Book and Movie

1. Role models: Edward is portrayed as the perfect boyfriend -- totally devoted, utterly protective, completely loving. But there’s also a bit of obsession and even some controlling behavior. What qualities does he have that appeal to your kids?

2. Role models, part two: Bella is smart, independent, and relatively self-assured. But she also always seems to need rescuing. What do your kids think about that? Do they think that her accident-prone nature is part of what appeals to Edward? Does he get to play the savior?

3. Reality check: What makes the relationship between Bella and Edward so exciting? Do your kids think they can find a relationship like that (vampirism aside...)?

4. Sexual abstinence: Edward and Bella draw the line at kissing. How realistic do your kids think that is for 17-year-olds?

5. What makes a good read: What is it about these books that makes them so popular? The romance? The constant danger? The Romeo-and-Juliet-ness of Bella and Edward’s relationship? Supernatural elements? Very handsome characters?

6. Books into film: What changes did the movie make, and why? Did you agree with them?

7. "I only play a vampire in the movies." A pre-release promotional tour by Robert Pattison (who plays Edward) has set off a frenzy. One girl in San Francisco actually asked the star to "bite her." Why do your kids think people confuse actors with the characters they play?
