She may play a "mean girl" in Camp Rock, but in real-life Meaghan Jette Martin is as bubbly and friendly as they come. We talked to the teen actress about her favorite TV shows (which range from Wizards of Waverly Place to Weeds), her parents' media rules, and more.
Common Sense Media: What's on your "media must" list?
Meaghan Jette Martin: I'm a big movie buff -- I'm always at the movie theater, watching all the new movies. I love TV, I have my shows. I'm a Heroes addict ... and of course the Disney shows. I actually truly do love Wizards of Waverly Place and Hannah Montana. ... I get into lots of reality TV, which is bad -- like Keeping up with the Kardashians, I love that show.
CSM: As you were growing up, did your parents have any media rules for you?
MJM: Well, yeah, there were definitely no inappropriate movies, nothing R-rated. I couldn't watch PG-13 until I was 13. That kind of stuff. And for TV shows, you know, make sure it's not too scary and it's not inappropriate -- especially because nowadays ... there's a lot of shows on that you're surprised that they can actually be on TV ... I love Desperate Housewives, but I feel like it should be on Showtime or something that's a little harder to access. I'm not gonna lie, I do love Showtime -- I love my Weeds, it's the funniest show ever -- but at least you have to really scroll through to get to them, it's not like you're flipping channels and all of a sudden you find something. ... When I have kids I don't want them to be able to change the channel and then all of a sudden for people to be, like, naked. [Laughs]
CSM: What kind of influence do you think media has on kids?
MJM: That's where they get a lot of their role models, and I think that's why, as an actress, for me it's very important to be a good role model. ... Part of me does want to be famous because I want to be a role model -- I want to be there to be like, "you know what, you're beautiful the way you are, you don't need to starve yourself, you don't need to worry about any of that because you know, nobody else does." I mean, look at me, I'm a huge dork, and I'm living my dream, so you can do it, too.
