Common Sense Media CEO James P. Steyer's Statement on the Internet Safety Technical Task Force

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Common Sense Media CEO James P. Steyer released the following statement today regarding the findings of the Internet Safety Technical Task Force.

“We at Common Sense Media agree with the findings of this report,” said Steyer. “Through the work of this commission, maybe––just maybe––we can all move beyond the Dateline approach of scaring our families and kids, and instead focus on what is really important in the 24/7 media world in which we live – making sure that parents know what it takes to be safe and smart online users, so they can share that information with their kids. 

“Technology is a major part of our kids’ worlds, and that is not going to change,” said Steyer. “Parents need to know what their kids are doing in their digital lives, and they have to be well informed about issues like privacy, ethical behavior, digital literacy, and cyberbullying. When parents understand these potential pitfalls and communicate with their kids, the internet can be an educational, entertaining, and safe environment.”
