Statement on President Biden’s Renewed Commitment to Hold Big Tech Accountable
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 11, 2023—Today, President Joe Biden wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal reaffirming his commitment to hold tech platforms accountable for the harms they cause American kids and teens. James P. Steyer, Common Sense Media's Founder and CEO, issued the following statement.
"We applaud President Biden's renewed commitment to address the most urgent tech policy challenges today. Families across America are deeply concerned about their online privacy and safety, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree that it's time to rein in Big Tech.
"Enacting a national federal privacy law, updating online protections for kids and teens, and holding platforms accountable to curb the spread of harmful content online has been a long time priority for Common Sense Media and is long overdue. Last year, we worked with the Future of Tech Commission to lay out a Blueprint for Action to address these issues. Many of the principles laid out by President Biden mirror these recommendations.
"2023 is the year for the federal government to finally update tech policy and make kids a priority. We look forward to working with the White House and Congress to make it happen."
