What Parents Need to Know

This review of Roblox was written by Hugh Foster

Parents need to know that this is a game-creation site where users design and upload their own games, as well as play other games in a multi-player environment. Some of the gameplay is advanced, and many games employ weapons. The site provides a super-safe chat mode for those under 13, as well as a parent log-in where you can oversee your child's use of the site.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about interacting with others while pursuing one's own goals. The site puts users in the position of choosing cooperation versus conflict in simulated real-world situations where the user needs to work with, against, or around another user in order to achieve his or her goals. Was it a good idea to jump over the other player in a rush to complete the course, or would it have been better to watch him attempt the course and let him show you the best path to choose?

More on Roblox

What’s the Story?

ROBLOX.COM allows amateur developers to use virtual bricks to build wildly creative and in-depth 3D virtual playworlds for other users to explore. You'll find trampolines, slides, tightropes, lava pits, huge winding staircases, and more. As users explore these worlds, they collect tickets that allow them to buy different types of merchandise for their avatars, and "Robux" -- the official currency of Robloxia -- which they use in their daily interactions. Most importantly, users can interact with one another, both through virtual chat and message boards where they can comment on and promote one another's creations, share development secrets, and generally encourage and support one another's creativity.

Is It Any Good?

The beauty of Roblox.com is that the site features a never-ending (and continually evolving) supply of creative and fun challenges to explore. The creativity of thousands of young developers is often exciting, amusing, and inspiring -- places range from simple obstacle courses to full cities. Unfortunately, when you get amateur developers, you also often get amateur development, occasionally resulting in rendering problems, onscreen flicker, and some extremely frustrating gameplay -- particularly when navigating mazes or jumping.

Gameplay issues aside, Roblox.com gets high marks for encouraging exploration, interaction and, above all, huge amounts of creativity in its users. By allowing kids to begin as player/explorers and evolve into experienced users and developers, this is a site that grows along with your child. Just be aware that the games can get violent.

    • Excessive violence
    • User content isn't age appropriate
    • My highlights are:

Great game, but due to inappropriate user-generated content that sometimes slips through the cracks, iffy for ages 10-18.

This is a GREAT game, and it is even educational - you can learn a version of the scripting language LUA to enhance your games, which are called "places". There is also a built in physics engine, which is really cool. However, games can be violent and sometimes even scary. The biggest concern, however, is the user-generated content. Though Roblox is strictly moderated and has a word filter, not all words are filtered, and there are some things on the site that parents may view as inappropriate for their children that were created by users. You can also frequently run into bullies on the Forums. Therefore, I rate Roblox iffy for ages 10-18.

I love this site! Both me and my brother have an account. You can play as a guest, get a free account, or pay for "builders clubs.'' I think its a great, safe, clean gaming site for kids.
